Instability Of Government Revenue And Expenditure In Less Developed Countries, David Lim May 1983

Instability Of Government Revenue And Expenditure In Less Developed Countries, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

The governments of most less developed countries (LDCs) depend basically on their tax and non-tax revenues to finance their expenditure programmes. Unless countervailing action is taken, instability in government revenue will result in instability in government expenditure. The latter can add considerably to the complexity of fiscal management, which may then render ineffective development planning.1 It can also reduce business confidence and lead to the precautionary discounting of prospective investment returns and so a lowering of the investment level. This note does not attempt to verify the claim that expenditure instability has adverse effects on economic growth. Its aim is …

On The Effectiveness Of Agricultural Land-Use Controls, Eric Tarquin Marnell May 1983

On The Effectiveness Of Agricultural Land-Use Controls, Eric Tarquin Marnell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Land resources are a valuable resource in the economic system. There exists considerable controversy surrounding the allocation of land into the competing land uses. At the heart of this controversy are agricultural land resources. The purpose of this paper is to investigate, first theoretically and second empirically, the effectiveness of controls placed on land use to keep land in agricultural production.

A theoretical conclusion is reached as to whether the free market or 1 and-use controls allocate land resources more efficiently. An empirical model is formulated to explain changes in the quantity of agricultural land as a function of several …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study is an empirical verification of the theories of the economics of information at the cattle producer's market in the U.S. Western Region. Weekly data on producer's price quotations were obtained from CATTLEFAX for 1973 through 1981. The three major objectives of the research are: first, to determine whether price dispersion exists in the cattle producer's market in the Western Region: second, if significant price dispersion are shown to exist, to determine the nature of the regional price distribution; and third, if price dispersion do exist, to determine the implications of the dispersion relative to competitive structure, efficient informational …

The Economic Impact Of Workers' Compensation And Unemployment Insurance Programs On Small Business, University Of New Mexico Bureau Of Business And Economic Research Feb 1983

The Economic Impact Of Workers' Compensation And Unemployment Insurance Programs On Small Business, University Of New Mexico Bureau Of Business And Economic Research

BBER Publications

This report examines the financial impact of workers' compensation and unemployment insurance programs on small and newly established businesses. Based on a survey of 1,194 firms across seven states, the study concludes that a distinct cost and utilization bias exists against small firms in workers' compensation programs. Specifically, smaller and newer businesses pay a significantly higher percentage of their payroll in premiums despite their employees making far less relative use of the program compared to larger, often self-insured corporations.

The Economic Impact Of Workers' Compensation And Unemployment Insurance Programs On Small Business, University Of New Mexico Bureau Of Business And Economic Research

BBER Publications

This report evaluates the dual macroeconomic impacts of state-administered workers' compensation and unemployment insurance programs on small and newly established businesses. Utilizing empirical mail-survey data gathered from 1,194 large and small firms across seven distinct states, the study reveals an inequitable financial premium burden and lower program utilization rates facing smaller employers under workers' compensation frameworks, while demonstrating that the relative financial and administrative impacts under unemployment insurance structures are comparatively balanced.

The State Of The Economy And Animal Welfare, Michael W. Fox Jan 1983

The State Of The Economy And Animal Welfare, Michael W. Fox

Animal Welfare Collection

An economic depression inevitably means that the under-privileged are compelled to suffer, but the plight of animals during "hard times" is often overlooked. Further, the present administration's budget cuts, and the pro-industry policies expressed by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of the Interior, in conjunction with the attempted financial emasculation of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (responsible for enforcing the Animal Welfare Act), all add insult to injury. Clearly, in such difficult economic times, the needs of people will inevitably take precedence over those of animals. But a society that unconditionally places …

Strategies Of Urban Labor Force Measurement, Barbara Ibrahim

Faculty Book Chapters

This work on urban research strategies in Egypt is the product of several factors. First of all is the challenge, excitement, diversity and stimulation of living in Egyptian cities, Cairo above all. Not only are Egyptian cities rooted in deep antiquity, but they have the richly stratified layers of a host of great civilizations. Modern urban Egypt is immeasurably complex in its own right, but its quite astounding past only adds to its wonderment. Thus, the chief inspiration for this publication is the wealthy cultural and historical context in which these scholars were assembled and where they sought to interpret …

Capital Gains Taxation In An Economy With An ‘Austrian Sector’, Dan Kovenock, Michael Rothschild Jan 1983

Capital Gains Taxation In An Economy With An ‘Austrian Sector’, Dan Kovenock, Michael Rothschild

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

This paper examines the effects of a proportional capital gains in an economy with an Austrian sector (with wine and trees) and an ordinary sector. We analyze the effect of capital gains taxation (on both an accrual and a realization basis) on the efficiency with which resources are used within the Austrian sector. Since time is the only input which can be varied in the Austrian sector, this amounts to looking at the effect of capital gains taxation on the harvesting time or selling time of assets. Accrual taxation decreases the selling time of Austrian assets. Realization taxation decreases the …
