Government Programs, Job Search Requirements, And The Duration Of Unemployment, Michael C. Keeley, Philip K. Robins Jul 1985

Government Programs, Job Search Requirements, And The Duration Of Unemployment, Michael C. Keeley, Philip K. Robins

Economics Articles and Papers

This paper presents an empirical analysis of how job search requirements under various government programs influence job search behavior. The analysis indicates that job search requirements exert a significant impact on certain aspects of the job search process, but not those that generally lead to a higher probability of employment. It is also found that persons who utilize intensively search activities that result in direct employer contact have much shorter durations of unemployment than persons who do not utilize such activities intensively. It is speculated that altering job search requirements to include more direct employer contact could lead to a …

Small Farmers' Cooperatives In Brazil, 1964-1984 Reasons For Success Or Failure, Henry H. Gerber Jul 1985

Small Farmers' Cooperatives In Brazil, 1964-1984 Reasons For Success Or Failure, Henry H. Gerber

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This study is concerned with cooperative business enterprises of small farmers. The topic has been chosen because peasants' association in supply and marketing cooperatives is considered an essential element in rural development. The author's field experience leads him to agree in principle with this assumption. But, as exemplified by Brazil, a variety of factors (ecological, sociohistorical, legal, economic and so forth) may hinder or help the inception and survival of cooperatives.

Thus, if a government aims at integrating the small producer into the national economy as supplier and consumer (as in Brazil), measures to implement t~is policy must not be …

While the full text is still being processed, the document likely extends or supplements the 1966–1984 historical evaluation by providing updated methodological notes, additional socioeconomic indicators, or revised estimates prepared for PNM or other state‑level planning entities.

A Study Of The Human Resources Principles Applied To Telemarketing Programs, Marian Elizabeth Jones May 1985

A Study Of The Human Resources Principles Applied To Telemarketing Programs, Marian Elizabeth Jones

Theses

The objective was to study organizations which have established telemarketing programs to understand the impact of distinct human resources principles used to establish and maintain the sales unit. A questionnaire was developed to determine whether telemarketing programs, which are specifically designed to recruit, select and train inside sales forces, differ from the programs used to do the same with outside sales forces. Furthermore, the sample population was asked whether telemarketing programs contribute to the overall success of the telemarketing force by catering to the special needs of inside sales people. This questionnaire was sent to a sampling of companies who …

Cross-Cultural Study Of Maslow's Need Theory Of Motivation, Jitendra N. Mishra May 1985

Cross-Cultural Study Of Maslow's Need Theory Of Motivation, Jitendra N. Mishra

Theses

Abraham H. Maslow's Need Theory of Motivation was subjected to a cross-cultural scrutiny to see if his theory has universal application. It was thus also intended, to make a contribution to his theory since today, global interdependence is no longer a matter of belief, preference or choice. Rather, it is an inescapable reality.

To achieve this goal, an extensive Literature Survey was undertaken. It was found that his theory is more consistent with American value system. Nevertheless, if care is exercised, his theory can be useful in International context too, with some necessary modifications.

This paper is directed to save …

Changes In Corporate Culture And Management Training Programs Resulting From The Divestiture Of At&T, Lisa Karen Fenster May 1985

Changes In Corporate Culture And Management Training Programs Resulting From The Divestiture Of At&T, Lisa Karen Fenster

Theses

The affects of divestiture upon the American Telephone and Telegraph Company are studied with particular emphasis upon changes in corporate culture, structure, goals and objectives, and management training programs.

A case study approach utilizes a literature search and interviews of a limited number of AT&T executives. It is confirmed that directly or indirectly, management training directions at AT&T are a reflection of corporate goals and objectives, and in a general sense, the corporate culture.

The relationship between training and the corporate culture is not direct and immediate but rather general and evolving. The corporate culture itself is seen as a …

An Economic Analysis Of Foreign Assets, Money Supply, And Inflation In Saudi Arabia, 1963-83, Said Ahmed M. Khalofa May 1985

An Economic Analysis Of Foreign Assets, Money Supply, And Inflation In Saudi Arabia, 1963-83, Said Ahmed M. Khalofa

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Until the discovery of oil in Saudi Arabia, the West knew very little about the economic aspects of the country. Since then, foreign assets have grown , and the balance of payment of Saudi Arabia have reflected an accumulation of continuously rising surpluses, particularly after 1973. Real income increased and consequentIy, supply and demand for money increased.

During the period 1974-77, the Saudi economy experienced a high rate of inflation, but during the subsequent years (the late 1970s and the early 1980s) the Saudi inflation rate began declining.

The main objective of the present study is to conduct an empirical …

The Immobility Of Low-Paid Workers, Marshall I. Pomer May 1985

The Immobility Of Low-Paid Workers, Marshall I. Pomer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper extends the labor segmentation perspective on unequal job access. Analyzed here are Census data on the occupational mobility of low-paid workers during the period 1965 to 1970. Upward mobility, defined as movement from a low-paid to a mainstream stratum, is far more common for white men than for women and blacks-even after controlling for differences in age, education, and type of low-paid job. A worker's particular low-paid occupation also strongly affects chances of entering the mainstream stratum. The dominant paradigm for quantitative research on social stratification is questioned, and social policies are suggested.

Exchange Rate Stability And Its Implications For Economic Development Of The Less Developed Countries, Chileshe Hilda Wabo Gowon May 1985

Exchange Rate Stability And Its Implications For Economic Development Of The Less Developed Countries, Chileshe Hilda Wabo Gowon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The question that Less Developed Countries have faced since the advent of floating exchange rates among the Industrial Countries is whether they should also adopt a floating exchange rate system. The Less Developed Countries have opted for a pegged exchange rate system, since their economic characteristics and institutional structure indicate that floating for the Less Developed Countries would result in volatile or unstable exchange rates. Since Less Developed Countries peg t heir exchange rates in the presence of flexible rates among industrial countries, the Less Developed Countries pegged exchange rates move in accordance to the exchange rates to which they …

Optimal Forest Rotation: Decisions Under Conditions Of Certainty And Uncertainty, Rabindra Nath Bhattacharyya May 1985

Optimal Forest Rotation: Decisions Under Conditions Of Certainty And Uncertainty, Rabindra Nath Bhattacharyya

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The existing literature determining the optimal rotation period of a forest stand under conditions of certainty, as well as under uncertainty, lacks the genera 1 scope to be useful. A forest provides timber of commercial value, a flow of recreational services, and other valuable environmental services. Providing goods and services involves benefits as well as costs. Relevant management decisions depend on the net values that can be obtained. The present work developes a more general model for determining an optimal rotation period incorporating various fixed and variable costs associated with timber production and recreational services in an environment of certainty …

External Borrowing And Economic Development: The Case Of Jordan, Riad Almomani May 1985

External Borrowing And Economic Development: The Case Of Jordan, Riad Almomani

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study examines Jordan's development policy and analyzes the role of Jordan's external public borrowing in economic development during the period 1967-1983. Mainly, Jordan's rapidly increasing external indebtedness is related to its development strategy which is based on the concept of unbalanced growth. This strategy has emphasized' the concentration of development resources (including external loans) in certain areas (e.g. Amman and Zarka) and certain economic sectors (e.g. industry and service) which are assumed to be growth propelling. The agricultural sector has been seriously ignored in Jordan's development process.

Jordan's growth has been quite impressive, but the problems of poverty and …

The Welfare Impacts Of Environmental Regulation In An Open Economy, Nicole Glineur May 1985

The Welfare Impacts Of Environmental Regulation In An Open Economy, Nicole Glineur

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The major theoretical and practical economic issues on pollution have apparently been sorted out. However, the bulk of the literature in environmental economics shares a shortcoming: the disregard of the welfare implications and consequences of pollution control.

Traditionally, pollution is viewed as a joint product. In this study, the issue of trade and environmental regulations is cast as a problem of input regulation, and the subsequent welfare implications of input regulation are then derived. The purpose of the present research is to emphasize the welfare consequences of pollution control in the context of international or interregional trade. The Batra and …

Does Inflation Tend To Perpetuate Itself? The Case Of Latin America, Ebrahim Harraf May 1985

Does Inflation Tend To Perpetuate Itself? The Case Of Latin America, Ebrahim Harraf

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was threefold: (1) to test the existing theory which explains inflation as a result of its self-generating nature; (2) to investigate the contribution of foreign trade upon inflation; and (3) to test the casual relationship between the rate of inflation and the deficit. A system of four equations has been used to explain the relationship between the price level and the monetary expansion, between the rate of growth of the monetary base and the rate of the monetary expansion, the deficit and the monetary base, and, finally, between the deficit and the price level. As …

The Role Of Patronage In Public Wage Determination, John Fessick Apr 1985

The Role Of Patronage In Public Wage Determination, John Fessick

Business and Economics Honors Papers

Patronage politics and government behavior, in general, lend themselves to economic model building and empirical analysis. They both require human processes to function. They are human institutions - shaped and molded by people. Because human beings are so vital a part of government and the behavior of decision-makers within that institution, assumptions of self-interest and the rational man lead to important implications which are necessary to the understanding and reshaping of government in order for it to work for the "common good." Only by understanding the framework of government and presenting an accurate picture of human behavior within that framework …

The Impact Of The Multinational Corporations On Leading Issues And Policy Making In Less Developed Countries (A Case Study On Kenya), Wamukota Francis W. Wambalaba Apr 1985

The Impact Of The Multinational Corporations On Leading Issues And Policy Making In Less Developed Countries (A Case Study On Kenya), Wamukota Francis W. Wambalaba

Dissertations and Theses

The era of Multinational Corporations (MNCs) is so significant in the development of the Less Developed Countries (LDCs) as was the era of the Industrial Revolution in the development of the now More Developed countries (MDCs). It could be referred to as one of the major economic frontiers in the LDCs as is the computer frontier in the MDCs now. Naturally, there are problems of distrust, fear of eventual crisis, uncertainty of the correct path and a pain in policy making. Coupled with the North/South delicate relationship, the MNC's acceptability in LDCs is of mixed feelings.

In this paper, we …

Reorientation Of A Nigeria's Industrial Policies: A Suggested Approach, Ishrat Husain Dr. Apr 1985

Reorientation Of A Nigeria's Industrial Policies: A Suggested Approach, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The theme which I wish to explore is that further improvement, indeed maintenance, of the general living standards of Nigerians which will require a rapid growth of the non-oil economy must grow not only to compensate for the decline in oil earnings but also to effect the desired increase in incomes, foreign exchange earnings and public revenue. The domination of oil income in the balance of payments and federal government revenue at present is such that for one percent decrease in oil income, the non-oil component must rise by roughly ten percent to prevent exports or government revenue from declining. …

This report provides an updated macroeconomic analysis of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) financial impact on the New Mexico economy during fiscal year 1984. Prepared by the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of New Mexico, the study utilizes refined multiplier models and agency data to show that DOE's $1.275 billion in direct state expenditures generated $2.337 billion in expanded economic income. Additionally, these funds supported a total of 76,700 jobs—equivalent to 15.6% of the state's total nonagricultural employment—and accounted for roughly 22% of New Mexico's individual state income tax revenue.

The Case Against Tax Reform In 1985, Murray L. Weidenbaum Mar 1985

The Case Against Tax Reform In 1985, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

The Treasury Department's tax reform proposals in 1985 should be opposed because they would 1) reduce incentives for new investment; 2) reduce venture capital for high-tech and other enterprises; 3) raise the tax burden on small businesses; 4) would create uncertainty for investors regarding future tax rules; 5) reduce economic growth; and 6) weaken the financial position of states and of private non-profit institutions.
