The Effect Of Right-To-Work Laws On Unionization In The United States, H. Craig Petersen, Keith Lumsden Jan 1975

The Effect Of Right-To-Work Laws On Unionization In The United States, H. Craig Petersen, Keith Lumsden

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

State right-to-work laws, the subject of considerable controversy in the industrial relations field, typically state that no person will be required to become a union member or, conversely, be required to abstain from union membership as a condition of obtaining or retaining employment. Little hard evidence exists on the effect of right-to-work laws. Meyers (1955) concludes that in Texas the law does not appear to have had a noticeable impact on union strength. Kuhlman (1955) finds that the Virginia law has caused little change in hiring practices, and he cites lack of enforcement as a major cause. Novit (1969), in …

An Empirical Test Of Regulatory Effects, H. Craig Petersen Jan 1975

An Empirical Test Of Regulatory Effects, H. Craig Petersen

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Averch and Johnson have provided analytical support for the assertion that rate of return regulation causes inefficient production because of the overuse of capital. Empirical evidence in support or refutation of their thesis is just beginning to appear. This paper provides additional evidence. The regulated firm's objective is stated in terms of cost minimization subject to a regulatory constraint. The effect of changes in the allowed rate of return on capital are evaluated. It is shown that as the allowed return approaches the cost of capital, costs increase and the percentage of total costs paid to capital also increases. These …

The Primitive Hunter Culture, Pleistocene Extinction, And The Rise Of Agriculture, Vernon L. Smith Jan 1975

The Primitive Hunter Culture, Pleistocene Extinction, And The Rise Of Agriculture, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

The hypothesis that megafauna extinction some 10,000 years ago was due to "overkill" by Paleolithic hunters is examined using an economic model of a replenishable resource. The large herding animals that became extinct, such as mammoth, bison, camel, and mastodon, presented low hunting cost and high kill value. The absence of appropriation provided incentives for the wastage killing evident in some kill sites, while the slow growth, long lives, and long maturation of large animals increased their vulnerability to extinction. Free-access hunting is compared with socially optimal hunting and used to interpret the development of conservationist ethics, and controls, in …

Economic Analysis Of The Management Of Idle County Funds In South Dakota, Wanda M. Leonard Jan 1975

Economic Analysis Of The Management Of Idle County Funds In South Dakota, Wanda M. Leonard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this report is to compute the potential earnings of a small county in South Dakota, that by comparison to other counties in the state, is in a relatively good position with respect to the investment of idle cash funds. The assumption is that if a county with a relatively good investment program can earn additional income, the potential revenue for counties with a more modest investment program would be even greater.

The Models Of Economic Choice Theory: A Paradigm For Non-Economists, John Heineke Jan 1975

The Models Of Economic Choice Theory: A Paradigm For Non-Economists, John Heineke

Economics

The ultimate goal of social science is to explain individual and group behavior within given institutional constraints. In practice this means developing models which effectively describe and predict human behavior. Recent experience has shown a particular approach to modeling individual behavior to be especially useful. The approach in question has been developed by economists and consists of using the analytical structure of utility theory to focus attention on the determinants of individual choice and then analyzing the responsiveness of individual choices to changes in these determinants. The success of model building in this format is evidenced by the fact that …

Water For Energy_1975, Allen V. Kneese, F. Lee Brown Jan 1975

Water For Energy_1975, Allen V. Kneese, F. Lee Brown

BBER Publications

The report analyzes the water requirements of major energy-production technologies and evaluates the potential consequences of large-scale domestic fossil-fuel development, particularly in the arid western United States. The authors review water demands associated with coal mining, coal gasification, coal liquefaction, oil shale processing, thermal electric generation, refinery operations, transportation systems, sulfur-removal technologies, secondary petroleum recovery, and land reclamation. They emphasize that energy production depends heavily on water for cooling, processing, dust control, transportation, pollution control, and reclamation activities and that rapid expansion of domestic energy supplies could create significant competition for limited water resources.

The Conventional And The Evolutionary Doctrines Of Capital Movements And Technological Diffusion In The Process Of Economic Development, Akbar Karbassian Nov 1974

The Conventional And The Evolutionary Doctrines Of Capital Movements And Technological Diffusion In The Process Of Economic Development, Akbar Karbassian

Economics ETDs

This dissertation examines two schools of thought concerning the question of economic development. The orthodox view of development is compared with that of the evolutionary economists' paradigm with respect to philosophical foundations, theoretical structure, and empirical evidence. More specifically, the purpose of this dissertation is: (1) to provide an overview of the basic principles underlying each school's conception of the development process; (2) to restate the fundamental hypotheses concerning development that are held by the two contending schools; and (3) to analyze the validity of the two theories by examining the available historical evidence of the developmental process as it …

Private Markets And Social Control, Lloyd D. Orr Oct 1974

Private Markets And Social Control, Lloyd D. Orr

IUSTITIA

The continuing failure of society to deal adequately with its problems has led to criticism that goes beyond the imperfections of a fundamentally sound social organization. Individual economic incentive and private markets, the basics of our economic organization, are condemned as inherently destructive of desirable social goals. It may be that such criticism is naive with respect to the basic history of economic organization and the prospects for meaningful alternatives. It also may be that the "solutions" offered are frequently more authoritarian than the critics allege the present system to be. We are still left to ponder the vital, long-standing, …

New Incentives For Middle Class Philanthropy: Radical Funding For The Public Good, Samuel M. Loescher Oct 1974

New Incentives For Middle Class Philanthropy: Radical Funding For The Public Good, Samuel M. Loescher

IUSTITIA

The recent expansions in membership and budget of the American Civil Liberties Union and, even more dramatically, the explosive funding by mail of newly-founded Common Cause and Public Citizen, all suggest the presence of evolutionary forces at work in the American political economy that are encouraging a renewal of middle class associations to monitor powerful institutions and to advocate in behalf of the relatively powerless.

The rash of whistle-blowing disclosures of citizen professionals which have alerted us to the multi-billion dollar wastage on C-5As and attack carriers, the existence of My-Lais, the military assemblage of dossiers on 30 million civilians, …

The Rate Of Return On The Investment In Registered Nurse Education As Related To The Supply Of Registered Nurses, Barbara Zuern May 1974

The Rate Of Return On The Investment In Registered Nurse Education As Related To The Supply Of Registered Nurses, Barbara Zuern

Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this research is the relationship between the supply of registered nurses and the rate of return on the educational investment to become a registered nurse. Is this rate of return a determining factor in the supply, past, present, and future? Since 98. 8 percent of all registered nurses are women, an integral part of this study is a survey of the data on women in the labor force.

The empirical data, statistical, was obtained from government sources and non-government associations, The American Nurses Association, The American Hospital Association, and the educational institutions. The data indicates the following: …

Consumer Surplus And Economic Rent Estimates Of Recreation Value: An Empirical And Theoretical Comparison, Eric R. Meale May 1974

Consumer Surplus And Economic Rent Estimates Of Recreation Value: An Empirical And Theoretical Comparison, Eric R. Meale

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The consumer surplus and economic rent methods of resource valuation were applied to boating recreation in Utah. Total consumer surplus and economic rent values were estimated for twenty-four boating sites. These values incorporate the relationship existing between the variable use cost and the units of activity associated with the site.

Data were collected by a mail survey directed to boaters during the 1973 boating season. Approximately 1,408 questionnaires were analyzed. Additional data were collected from the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation.

Economic rent and consumer surplus were compared by using a common mathematical model and empirical observation. The concepts …

The Effectiveness Of Induced Location Of Manufacturing Industry As A Means Of Fostering Sustained Economic Growth In Less Developed Regions Of Oregon, Leland F. Smith Mar 1974

The Effectiveness Of Induced Location Of Manufacturing Industry As A Means Of Fostering Sustained Economic Growth In Less Developed Regions Of Oregon, Leland F. Smith

Dissertations and Theses

The subject of this thesis was chosen from both a professional and an academic interest in the economic development of Oregon. Prompted by proposals made to the Oregon Legislature to initiate various forms of industrial subsidy programs to disperse economic growth and population away from congested areas, this research effort seeks to provide an evaluative analysis of the effectiveness of subsidy techniques in influencing industrial location and stimulating a sustained growth process in less developed areas.

Research was undertaken in two primary subjects: 1) theory of regional economic development and the effects of subsidies on the growth process; and 2) …
