Income Distribution, Export Instability, And Savings Behavior, David Lim
Income Distribution, Export Instability, And Savings Behavior, David Lim
Support & Other Units (THEi)
This paper examines the effects of income distribution and export instability on the savings ratios of a group of 12 developed and 52 less developed countries (DCs and LDCs) for 1968-73. The effect of income distribution on savings has been studied before but not on as comprehensive a group of countries as presented here. The effect of export instability on savings has not been examined before in the literature on the determinants of savings behavior. It has, however, been discussed in the literature on the relationship between export instability and economic growth and part of the purpose of this paper …

The Market For Winter Skiing In Two Minnesota Areas, Richard O. Sielaff
The Market For Winter Skiing In Two Minnesota Areas, Richard O. Sielaff
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Two studies of Minnesota "skiing households," one of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and one of the Duluth area, are reported. The studies were financed by the Upper Great Lakes Regional Commission in an effort to determine the marketing potential for skiing and ski facilities of Spirit Mountain at Duluth. This paper presents results for one of many research objectives involved. It is indicated that skiing households represent about one-fourth of all households in the study areas; that there are boys and/or girls up to 19 years old in about half of the skiing households; income of skiing households is …

Law Enforcement Agencies As Multiproduct Firms: Correcting Some Misconceptions, John Heineke, M. N. Darrough
Economics
The comment by Pyle and Deadman [PD] on our paper deals with several points which arise regularly in empirical applications of economic theory and especially in applications in which "firms" do not operate in traditional market places. Their first point concerns the appropriate definition of output in law enforcement agencies: Is the final output deterrence of future crimes, solving existing crimes, both, or something else? PD argue that deterrence {crime prevention) is the primary output of law enforcement agencies, and from society's perspective, this is undoubtedly true. But as we attempted to make clear in our paper, we were interested …

Revenue Sources For State And Local Governments: Criteria For Choice, Philip Favero
Revenue Sources For State And Local Governments: Criteria For Choice, Philip Favero
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Citizen dissatisfaction with taxes is a theme which has recurred often in American history--from the Tea Party at Boston to Proposition 13 in California. As before, tax dissatisfaction in its current form is prompting changes in: the level of government expenditures; the mix of revenue sources used to finance expenditures; and the structure of institutions created to provide public services. Much of the local tax reform effort is focused on state and local finance systems and especially on the real property tax. Citizen participation in reform efforts is an example of democracy in action. Yet, the quality of reforms achieved …

A Total Budget Methodology For Analyzing Interdistrict Equity Of State Educational Finance Systems With An Application To Nebraska, F. Gregory Hayden
A Total Budget Methodology For Analyzing Interdistrict Equity Of State Educational Finance Systems With An Application To Nebraska, F. Gregory Hayden
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
As in most states today, serious legislative concern is being given to elementary and secondary educational finance reform in Nebraska.' Also as in most states, Nebraska's main reform concern is the equity of fiscal distributions among school districts. Although, as anyone who has attempted to keep up with court decisions regarding educational finance knows,' equity is an elusive enough concept in the abstract and even more so when applied in the concrete. In general, though, the concern with regard to school finance is one of interdistrict equity. Using recent decisions as the criteria for judgment, the results of this study …

Institutional Economics And Urban Political Economy, Forrest Clinton Blodgett
Institutional Economics And Urban Political Economy, Forrest Clinton Blodgett
Dissertations and Theses
The emergence of a complex and highly urbanized industrial society has inspired great study of urbanization and urban phenomena by social scientists. Unfortunately, most social scientists study urbanology within the relatively narrow confines of their particular disciplines. Sociologists concentrate on urban phenomena arising out of human-group relationships, while political scientists concentrate on units of urban government and intergovernmental relations. Likewise, economists study urbanology from a market perspective while geographers tend to concentrate on urban location theory and historians are concerned about the history of urbanization. Moreover, urban planners and research specialists are principally practitioners who receive and attempt to apply …

Efficient Employment Of Cohorts Of Labor In The U.S. Economy: An Illustration Of A Method, A. E. Boardman, Steven M. Miller, A. P. Schinnar
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper presents a model for the analysis of efficient labor force participation in the U.S. economy. Ridge regression estimates of the elasticities of cohorts of labor, classified by sex and occupation, are used in conjunction with wage data to illustrate the derivation of efficient allocation of labor cohorts in five economic sectors. These efficient constructs are compared with actual census data for 1960 and 1970. The results, while tentative, show a trend toward more efficient utilization of labor and greater participation by women in the work force.
Input Substitution In The Coal-Fired Electric Power Industry, Mohammad Fatoorehchie
Input Substitution In The Coal-Fired Electric Power Industry, Mohammad Fatoorehchie
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A gradual increase in the price of oil, a decline in the supply of gas, and a lag in nuclear construction leaves coal (a potential major resource for the future energy needs) as a fuel in ample supply. The major portion of the United States' electricity is generated by steam-driven generators where steam is produced by fossil fuel-fired boilers. In 1978, 47 percent of the total electricity generation was fueled by coal, up from 43 percent in 1975. Use of coal in generation of electricity has spawned numerous research projects concerning the economics of the coal-fired electric power industry.

Core Size, Pricing, And Cost Structure, William K. Edwards
Core Size, Pricing, And Cost Structure, William K. Edwards
Economics Theses & Dissertations
This thesis presents a proof of an inverse limit theorem of the core of an economy. The implication of the theorem is that a larger core can be obtained by the formation of coalitions. A large core contains multiple Pareto optimal allocations from which society may select in order to maximize its welfare. Furthermore, this paper places an emphasis on pricing schemes that guarantee a core allocation under increasing returns to scale. Two pricing models are introduced that guarantee a non-empty core under increasing returns to scale.

The Magnitude And Timing Of Rail Abandonment Impacts On Selected Economic Variables For Rural South Dakota Communities, J. Michael Alley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the economic impacts of past branchline abandonments on rural South Dakota communities. In this chapter the factors and conditions leading to the abandonment of the branchlines are examined first. Then a section discussing the perspectives of the people and entities involved in the abandonment is presented. This is followed by the reasons for undertaking the study and the study objectives. Finally an overview of the remaining chapters is presented.
