I.G. Farben's Petro-Chemical Plant And Concentration Camp At Auschwitz, Robert Simon Yavner Jul 1984

I.G. Farben's Petro-Chemical Plant And Concentration Camp At Auschwitz, Robert Simon Yavner

History Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the history of the petrochemical plant and concentration camp run by I.G. Farbenindustrie (the dominant German chemical company during World War II) at Auschwitz to decide upon the degree of Farben’s involvement with Hitler and the Holocaust. The study traces the construction of the plant to determine Farben's participation at Auschwitz. The main sources consulted were the transcripts of the postwar Farben trial at Nuremberg along with eyewitness accounts of members of the prosecution staff. Based on the court's verdict, one might conclude that I.G. Farben operated in a state of coercion during the war and could …

The Cost Effective Acquisition And Dissemination Of Market Information: A Computerized Approach, Tammy Burton May 1984

The Cost Effective Acquisition And Dissemination Of Market Information: A Computerized Approach, Tammy Burton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Clearly, many of the developments in computerized market systems are regarded as revolutionary in an industry which has undergone diminutive changes in marketing its products and acquiring current market information. Cognizance of the agricultural market situation is pertinent for maximum production efficiency, bargaining strength, and financial success for producers.

Collectively, producers in Utah face the dilemma of receiving approximately ten percent less in cash receipts for their commodities than their counterparts in surrounding states. Market information that was attainable by producers was often obsolete, redundant, expensive, and irrelevant to the market situation in Utah.

The implementation of a Computerized Market …

Princess Anne County: A Study In Material Wealth, Todd Grant Duncan

History Theses & Dissertations

This is a study of material culture in Princess Anne County, Virginia, from 1691 to 1823, based on court records. These documents allow the historian to determine the economic worth of a group of individuals, analyze the types of people comprising this group, categorize the types and quantities of possessions owned, and differentiate between economic groups according to possessions and currency listed. Trends of ownership for the whole period, the determination of individual occupations, and the occupational content of the people of the county at large are also discussed. Other areas focused on included the level of literacy, the role …

A Systems Paradigm For Community Development, Salvatore Imbrogno Mar 1984

A Systems Paradigm For Community Development, Salvatore Imbrogno

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The study of and practice in communities requires a theoretic construct of an overarching conceptualization that can "sweep-in" existing paradigms; variant epistemological foundations and methodological directives for complex community development. The purpose of this paper is to identify and define the existing epistemological and methodological approaches to communities with the objective of coalescing them into a unified system of inquiry. The intent is to first raise the level of abstraction in and about a community that goes beyond the confines of any (or combined) paradigm. In so doing, one can converge a polarity of opposing positions to the study and …

Asset Exchanges And The Transactions Demand For Money, 1919-1929, Alexander J. Field Mar 1984

Asset Exchanges And The Transactions Demand For Money, 1919-1929, Alexander J. Field

Economics

This paper addresses a general theoretical question—the appropriate specification of the transactions demand for money—as well as a particular historical question: what triggered the Great Depression? Theoretically, fluctuations in the volume and value of asset exchanges in secondary asset markets can influence the transactions demand for money independently of real output and interest rates, and ought to be integrated into the analysis of those forces perturbing the demand for money and shifting LM curves in the absence of monetary intervention. Empirically, I demonstrate that, over the years 1919-29, monthly fluctuations in the volume and value of trading on the New …

The Economics Of Primary School Closings: A Cost Analysis, Raymond L. Raab, Richard W. Lichty Jan 1984

The Economics Of Primary School Closings: A Cost Analysis, Raymond L. Raab, Richard W. Lichty

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Because of declining demands for a number of urban public services, public officials have had to make difficult adjustments towards more efficient levels of these services. One such adjustment of very great concern has been the modification of education services in response to declining enrollments. This study investigates the impacts of changing enrollments, enrollment scale, capacity utilization, and age of schools on per student instructional costs and per student cost of land and buildings. The resulting model has been estimated for Duluth, Minnesota primary schools and these regression estimates provide a good explanation for per student instructional costs. The residuals …

An Empirical Study Of Property Tax Capitalization In The Cleveland Area, Kevin Adler Jan 1984

An Empirical Study Of Property Tax Capitalization In The Cleveland Area, Kevin Adler

Honors Papers

Economists have long criticized the property tax on two counts: inherent assessment inaccuracies and regressivity with respect to income. The first problem is somewhat bureaucratic in nature, being the responsibility of the assessors. The second, however, looks into the heart of the property tax because it charges that the tax is fundamentally flawed. This paper will present evidence that rejects the regressivity notion.

Natural Monopoly And The Contestable Markets Hypothesis: Some Preliminary Results From Laboratory Experiments, Don R. Coursey, R. Mark Isaac, Vernon L. Smith Jan 1984

Natural Monopoly And The Contestable Markets Hypothesis: Some Preliminary Results From Laboratory Experiments, Don R. Coursey, R. Mark Isaac, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

The concept of natural monopoly is one of the most familiar in economics. Many supposed natural monopolies are the object of widespread state, local, and federal regulation. It was in addressing issues of public utility regulation that Demsetz laid the foundation for an alternative scenario for decreasing cost markets. Demsetz's article promoted a debate over whether a formal auction system might provide a practical approach to monopoly control. This literature is rich in examining the practical difficulties of implementing such an institution. The important characteristic of the contestable markets hypothesis, as we interpret it, is that at least two firms …

Cyclical Double-Auction Markets With And Without Speculators, Arlington W. Williams, Vernon L. Smith Jan 1984

Cyclical Double-Auction Markets With And Without Speculators, Arlington W. Williams, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

This study reports the results of 18 computerized 'double-auction' market experiments characterized by cycling excess demand. Two such market designs are studied: one with stationary supply and cycling demand, the other with cycling supply and demand. Data from a series of control experiments under conditions of intertemporal isolation (autarky) are compared with data from experiments where the two cyclical market phases are linked by a subset of agents (speculators). Allowing intertemporal speculation is found to be a significant treatment variable in both market designs; however, price convergence patterns are not robust with respect to the design change.

Income Tax Evasion: Some Aggregate Empirical Evidence, Steven E. Crane, Farrokh Nourzad Jan 1984

Income Tax Evasion: Some Aggregate Empirical Evidence, Steven E. Crane, Farrokh Nourzad

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

It is well-known that every year a substantial amount of income evades income taxation. This is obviously a significant policy problem. To solve this problem, the tax authorities must have information about the factors that taxpayers consider when deciding how much income to report on their tax returns. The need for such information has prompted a number of theoretical and empirical studies of the evasion problem.

In this paper some aggregate empirical evidence on income tax evasion in the U.S. is provided. This is accomplished by specifying an aggregate tax evasion function which is estimated over the period 1947-78. The …

Developing Non-Craft Employment For Women In Bangladesh, Marty Chen Jan 1984

Developing Non-Craft Employment For Women In Bangladesh, Marty Chen

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Too often when development planners or practitioners plan income-generating schemes for women they consider only handicrafts. While in some situations craft production may provide a secure source of income for women, in many cases it results in poor returns and proves more complicated an undertaking than expected. The Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) is one agency that has developed a successful program of non-craft employment opportunities for women. Some 10,000 poor women have been engaged by BRAC in viable economic schemes: 9,000 in non-craft production. This issue of SEEDS reviews BRAC's experience in developing non-craft employment opportunities and participatory associations …

Political Vs. Economic Incentives, B. Delworth Gardner Jan 1984

Political Vs. Economic Incentives, B. Delworth Gardner

Faculty Publications

H this paper is the best challenge that can be brought against the New Resource Economics (NRE) and its advocacy for privatization of the public lands, we are likely to see both around for a long time. If there is fallacy in the idea of privatization, it is not illuminated in the arguments of this article. The paper misrepresents what the NRE is, shows little comprehension of the basic concepts on which it rests, and completely reverses the basic nature of the privatization solution. I hope to demonstrate as much in this critique.

Two Agricultural Economists Look At Rural Sociology, B. Delworth Gardner, Carole Frank Nuckton

Faculty Publications

At the invitation of the editor, we shall attempt to describe our perceptions as agricultural economists of what is known to us as rural sociology. We should say right off that we are complimented that this invitation has been extended to us. We think that a comparison of our two disciplines has been useful to us, if only to clarify our thinking about our own. We emphasize that our perceptions are based on limited contact, and we have made no systematic study of your discipline. Even to attempt the critique and analysis of the kind requested of us presumes an …

Reaganomics And The Welfare State, Mimi Abramovitz, Tom Hopkins Nov 1983

Reaganomics And The Welfare State, Mimi Abramovitz, Tom Hopkins

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Supply-side tax and spending policies have intensified poverty, unemployment and inequality, especially for women, minorities and organized labor. At the same time Reaganomics is shrinking and weakening the welfare state. To better understand and resist this conservative assault it is necessary to demystify the "economics" and "politics" of supply-side doctrine. This paper (a) defines the basic assumptions of supply-side economics; (b) identifies some of its problems and contradictions; (c) discusses its impact on the welfare state; and (d) analyzes it as part of a broader plan for coping with the current economic crisis. It argues that the supply-side tax cut …
