Tax Rate Changes, Interest Rate Volatility, And The Decline In Velocity, 1981-1983, James Mcgibany, Farrokh Nourzad Jan 1986

Tax Rate Changes, Interest Rate Volatility, And The Decline In Velocity, 1981-1983, James Mcgibany, Farrokh Nourzad

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

One of the most puzzling economic events in the U.S. during this decade has been the dramatic decline in the growth rate of the income velocity of money. From the fourth quarter of 1981 to the second quarter of 1983, the velocity growth rate fell by nearly 4% as opposed to its 3% trend growth rate. Traditional models have been unable to fully capture this unusual behavior of velocity, over predicting its rate of growth. The present study is concerned with this over prediction problem and attempts to more accurately explain the decline in the velocity growth rate in the …

Relative Price Changes And Exchange Rate Determination With Slow Price Adjustment: An Empirical Analysis, Clas Wihlborg, Madelyn Antoncic Jan 1986

Relative Price Changes And Exchange Rate Determination With Slow Price Adjustment: An Empirical Analysis, Clas Wihlborg, Madelyn Antoncic

Business Faculty Articles and Research

The general purpose of this paper is to analyze empirically sectoral price adjustment in the exchange rate adjustment process. Relative price changes may occur within a sector between countries, and within a country between sectors. Our main objective is to test the hypothesis that both kinds of relative price changes occur in the adjustment process to disturbances in money demand and supply. In particular, we expect that the relative prices among goods of different "tradedness"--ranging from perfectly traded to non-traded goods--are affected by such disturbances. Our second objective is to test empirically whether the nature of exchange rate adjustment is …

Identification By Disaggregation, Matthew J. Cushing, Mary G. Mcgarvey Dec 1985

Identification By Disaggregation, Matthew J. Cushing, Mary G. Mcgarvey

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

Standard economic theory predicts that the actions of individual participants in competitive markets have negligible effects on market-determined aggregates. Applied researchers, and even some econometric textbooks, incorrectly infer from this that market prices can be modeled as econometrically exogenous with respect to the quantity demanded of an individual consumer. This faulty inference has even led some researchers (for example, Robert Engle, 1978; Nicholas Kiefer, 1984; Roger Waud, 1974) to employ an estimation strategy we call identification by disaggregation (IBD). This procedure attempts to circumvent the simultaneity problem in a macro regression by disaggregating the dependent variable and estimating the relationship …

Neoclassical Theory In America: J. B. Clark And Fisher, James Tobin Sep 1985

Neoclassical Theory In America: J. B. Clark And Fisher, James Tobin

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The intellectual breakthroughs that mark the neoclassical revolution in economic analysis occurred in Europe around 1870. The next two decades witnessed lively debates in which the new theory more or less absorbed or was absorbed in the classical tradition that preceded and provoked it. In the 1890s, according to Joseph A. Schumpeter (1954, p. 754) there emerged “a large expanse of common ground and … a feeling of repose, both of which created, in the superficial observer, an impression of finality — the finality of a Greek temple that spreads its perfect lines against a cloudless sky.” Of course the …

Government Programs, Job Search Requirements, And The Duration Of Unemployment, Michael C. Keeley, Philip K. Robins Jul 1985

Government Programs, Job Search Requirements, And The Duration Of Unemployment, Michael C. Keeley, Philip K. Robins

Economics Articles and Papers

This paper presents an empirical analysis of how job search requirements under various government programs influence job search behavior. The analysis indicates that job search requirements exert a significant impact on certain aspects of the job search process, but not those that generally lead to a higher probability of employment. It is also found that persons who utilize intensively search activities that result in direct employer contact have much shorter durations of unemployment than persons who do not utilize such activities intensively. It is speculated that altering job search requirements to include more direct employer contact could lead to a …

Cross-Cultural Study Of Maslow's Need Theory Of Motivation, Jitendra N. Mishra May 1985

Cross-Cultural Study Of Maslow's Need Theory Of Motivation, Jitendra N. Mishra

Theses

Abraham H. Maslow's Need Theory of Motivation was subjected to a cross-cultural scrutiny to see if his theory has universal application. It was thus also intended, to make a contribution to his theory since today, global interdependence is no longer a matter of belief, preference or choice. Rather, it is an inescapable reality.

To achieve this goal, an extensive Literature Survey was undertaken. It was found that his theory is more consistent with American value system. Nevertheless, if care is exercised, his theory can be useful in International context too, with some necessary modifications.

This paper is directed to save …

Changes In Corporate Culture And Management Training Programs Resulting From The Divestiture Of At&T, Lisa Karen Fenster May 1985

Changes In Corporate Culture And Management Training Programs Resulting From The Divestiture Of At&T, Lisa Karen Fenster

Theses

The affects of divestiture upon the American Telephone and Telegraph Company are studied with particular emphasis upon changes in corporate culture, structure, goals and objectives, and management training programs.

A case study approach utilizes a literature search and interviews of a limited number of AT&T executives. It is confirmed that directly or indirectly, management training directions at AT&T are a reflection of corporate goals and objectives, and in a general sense, the corporate culture.

The relationship between training and the corporate culture is not direct and immediate but rather general and evolving. The corporate culture itself is seen as a …

Training New Employees In Ecuador's Esmeraldas Oil Refinery, Rodrigo Alfredo Morales May 1985

Training New Employees In Ecuador's Esmeraldas Oil Refinery, Rodrigo Alfredo Morales

Theses

This thesis comprises an overall review of general methods of training used by two New Jersey oil refineries of similar circumstances to Ecuador's Esmeraldas oil refinery.

The method of research was a survey in the form of a questionnaire. It was sent to the five existing oil refineries across New Jersey. Statewide telephone conversations, and with Ecuadorian personnel executives were made to request pertinent information. Research from current journals, training books, and first hand data from refineries, support the recommendations and the study in general.

The results of the thesis include recommendations as to the most advantageous policies and training …

The Immobility Of Low-Paid Workers, Marshall I. Pomer May 1985

The Immobility Of Low-Paid Workers, Marshall I. Pomer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper extends the labor segmentation perspective on unequal job access. Analyzed here are Census data on the occupational mobility of low-paid workers during the period 1965 to 1970. Upward mobility, defined as movement from a low-paid to a mainstream stratum, is far more common for white men than for women and blacks-even after controlling for differences in age, education, and type of low-paid job. A worker's particular low-paid occupation also strongly affects chances of entering the mainstream stratum. The dominant paradigm for quantitative research on social stratification is questioned, and social policies are suggested.

The Welfare Impacts Of Environmental Regulation In An Open Economy, Nicole Glineur May 1985

The Welfare Impacts Of Environmental Regulation In An Open Economy, Nicole Glineur

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The major theoretical and practical economic issues on pollution have apparently been sorted out. However, the bulk of the literature in environmental economics shares a shortcoming: the disregard of the welfare implications and consequences of pollution control.

Traditionally, pollution is viewed as a joint product. In this study, the issue of trade and environmental regulations is cast as a problem of input regulation, and the subsequent welfare implications of input regulation are then derived. The purpose of the present research is to emphasize the welfare consequences of pollution control in the context of international or interregional trade. The Batra and …
