Are Filipino Smokers More Sensitive To Cigarette Prices Due To The Sin Tax Reform Law?: A Difference-In-Difference Analysis, Myrna S. Austria, Jesson A. Pagaduan

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Employing a two-part estimation model using the Family Income Expenditure Survey before (2009) and after (2015) the tax reform, our study assessed the impact of the Philippine Sin Tax Reform Act (2012) on cigarette consumption and the responsiveness of cigarette consumption to price changes. The results are consistent with existing studies that cigarette consumption is price inelastic. The demand, however, has become less inelastic in the Philippines over the period 2009 to 2015, indicating a more responsive cigarette demand to price increases. Of the total effect of cigarette price increase on demand, the decrease in consumption by smokers (smoking intensity) …

Anticipating Aging And Prospecting Pension For Retirement Well-Being, Roberto E. Javier Jr., Mitzie Irene Conchada, Melvin Jabar

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Filipino young and middle-aged adults anticipate old age positively as it is a mark of achievement in human life but negatively apprehend living through their old age, given the high incidence of poverty among the elderly in the Philippines. The issues surrounding the insurance system, income security, and social pension in old age were all related to unfavorable views about living through the aging years. In-depth group interviews (IGIs) conducted across cities and municipalities in the countryside generated conceptions about aging and concerns about becoming old in a society with no strong social protection for its graying population. A qualitative …

Indonesia’s regional economic growth model that controls spatial dependence, yields better estimates than growth model that does not control spatial dependence. The researchers also found positive spatial spillover to Indonesia’s regional economic growth sourced from other region’s economic growth and initial per capita incomes, as well as population growth in other regions.

Migration And Remittances, Seyedsoroosh Azizi Jan 2019

Migration And Remittances, Seyedsoroosh Azizi

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

My dissertation focuses on three topics: motivations behind remittances, cyclicality of remittances, and the impacts of remittances on human capital and labor supply in developing countries.

In the first chapter, I introduce the three topics. In the second chapter, I examine the primary incentives of remitting. Using estimated bilateral data on remittances, this chapter demonstrates that a rise in the remittance-receiving countries' GNI per capita leads to fewer remittances and that a rise in the host remittance-sending countries' GNI per capita motivates migrants to remit more. Real exchange rates and real interest rates have no effect on remittances. These results …

Minimum Dropout Age And Juvenile Crime In The United States, Md. Abdur Rahman Forhad Jan 2019

Minimum Dropout Age And Juvenile Crime In The United States, Md. Abdur Rahman Forhad

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

My dissertation examines how an increased minimum dropout age (MDA) affects juvenile crime not only in the community, but also in school. I first empirically estimate the magnitude of the impact of a higher MDA on high school enrollment. I then develop an economic model of crime that explains the relationship between an MDA and contemporaneous juvenile crime and empirically examine how a higher MDA affects juvenile crime both in the community and in school. I find that raising the MDA from 16 to 18 significantly increases school enrollment by 2.57%. Next, I find that raising the MDA to an …

Effects Of Tax Increment Financing On School Finance And Local Economic Development, Chaoran He Jan 2019

Effects Of Tax Increment Financing On School Finance And Local Economic Development, Chaoran He

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Tax Increment Financing (TIF) is a legislatively enacted economic tool that has been widely employed by local governments to promote economic growth. The motivation of this dissertation stems from a critical premise on the designation of TIF districts—the “but for” clause. State legislatures require that TIF initiators must demonstrate the subsidized development in candidate areas would not occur “but for” the subsidy. Such a requirement is inherently counterfactual in nature, which leads to a series of controversies on the fiscal status of overlapping taxing entities and the measurements of local economic development.

This dissertation separately investigates the effects of TIF …

Income Inequality And Political Survival In Countries Around The World, Sahan Shrestha Jan 2019

Income Inequality And Political Survival In Countries Around The World, Sahan Shrestha

Masters Theses

There are many factors that influence whether a political leader exits out of office or remains in power. In this thesis, we evaluate the impact of one important factor, income inequality, on the survival prospects of the leader using data for 152 countries for the period 1962 - 2015. We use a linear probability model, a logit model, and a Cox Proportional Hazard Model, all of which indicate that higher income inequality increases the probability of leader survival. To address the potential endogeneity of income inequality, I use a simultaneous equations model and the results hold. The results are also …

Farm To Label: A Critique Of Consumer Activism In The Sustainable Food Movement, Olivia Whitener

Pomona Senior Theses

“Local,” “organic,” “natural,” and “Fairtrade” are just several of the many claims adorning the food products that line grocery store shelves. These promises of environmental sustainability and social responsibility are pillars of the “good food revolution” sweeping the nation as consumers demand alternatives to the products of the industrial food system. Green consumerism, the premise that consumer demand for environmentally sustainable goods will bring about ecologically beneficial outcomes, is at the heart of the sustainable food movement. This thesis takes a critical look at the operation of green consumerism in the food system. It explores the ideology and shortcomings of …
