Grads On The Go: Measuring College-Specific Labor Markets For Graduates, Johnathan G. Conzelmann, Steven W. Hemelt, Brad J. Hershbein, Shawn Martin, Andrew Simon, Kevin M. Stange

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper introduces a new measure of the labor markets served by colleges and universities across the United States. About 50 percent of recent college graduates are living and working in the metro area nearest the institution they attended, with this figure climbing to 67 percent in-state. The geographic dispersion of alumni is more than twice as great for highly selective 4-year institutions as for 2-year institutions. However, more than one-quarter of 2-year institutions disperse alumni more diversely than the average public 4-year institution. In one application of these data, we find that the average strength of the labor market …

Journal of Demography

Vietnam is ageing rapidly and is predicted to enter an aged society within the next fifteen years, posing a major challenge for a lower middle-income nation with an incomplete social security system. Supporting older persons to continue working can be a reasonable strategy to ensure their life quality and reduce the burden on the national social security system. Our study aims to investigate the determinants of older persons’ participation in the labour force and their type of work. Based on the 2018 and 2020 Vietnam Housing and Living Standard surveys, health problems, pension status, and level of education significantly explain …

Reevaluating Positive Freedom Through The Philosophy Of Amartya Sen With A Focus On Education As A Catalyst For Freedom, Emilie Mathilde Vesten Haakansson

Theses and Dissertations

Education has since ancient times been used as a societal tool to develop and cultivate society’s individuals into participating members. Education which is considered a fundamental human right also holds potential transformative power to enable and empower individuals to exercise their freedom to create a life that aligns with their own values, ideas and goals. However, how effective an educational system can be, ultimately depends on the accessibility and quality of the education as well as the overall system the educational institutions operate in. This thesis explores how education can function as a catalyst for furthering individuals’ freedom through a …

Poverty And Inequality: A New Deal For America’S Most Disadvantaged Communities, Thomas St. Hilaire Jan 2024

Poverty And Inequality: A New Deal For America’S Most Disadvantaged Communities, Thomas St. Hilaire

Theses and Dissertations

The United States, often hailed as the most affluent nation globally, paradoxically grapples with rates of poverty, disadvantage, and inequality that surpass those of its advanced democratic counterparts. The persistence of poverty and inequality in the United States have often been justified by beliefs of welfare dependency, “free market” thinking and utilitarianism. This master's thesis explores the far-reaching moral, political, and economic consequences of America’s high rates of poverty and inequality. It contends that federal action is urgently needed on more robust social programs that target poverty, such as affordable housing, accessible healthcare, greater worker protections, and deepened social capital …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The role of public libraries is changing in response to a multitude of influences and trends. The exponential growth of technology as the primary method of information access, funding challenges, changing demographics, and other mitigating factors have forced public libraries to become more than book repositories. Community library leaders and governing board members are faced with challenges such as decreased funding, community division regarding library services, and soaring costs for library materials and services, as they develop and adopt policies and practices to navigate this ever-changing environment.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to collect data from the public …

The Roles Of Inward Fdi On Environmental Quality In Asian Countries, Onpreeya Kunthong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study investigates the impact of inward foreign direct investment (FDI) on environmental quality across 31 Asian countries from 1990 to 2020. These countries are categorized into three income groups: 14 lower-middle income, 10 upper-middle income, and 7 high-income countries. Environmental quality is assessed using two key indicators—carbon dioxide (CO₂) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions. To capture both the short- and long-run dynamics, the research uses the panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) technique within the STIRPAT (Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence, and Technology) model framework. Koch, Ria Kolarao, Steve Lawson, Feng Lian, Anna Makhorkina, Melody Nguyen, Mohamed Rahoui, Panagiotis Taoulas, Leiu Yuenyong

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

This is Old Dominion University’s 25th annual State of the Region Report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion, its president, Brian Hemphill, Ph.D., the Board of Visitors, the Strome College of Business, or the generous donors who support the activities of the Dragas Center for Economic Analysis and Policy.

The news, especially when compared to the previous decade, is mostly good. The region’s economy grew in 2023 and will likely grow for a fourth consecutive year in 2024. Even after …

Part 1: As Good As It Gets? The Economy Of Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Hampton Roads’ economy was a study in contrasts in 2024. For the first time in almost two decades, the regional economy grew in four consecutive years. A record number of individuals were in the civilian labor force and employed, and employers reported a record number of jobs. Job growth, however, lagged our peers. Now is the time to invest in key industry clusters to spur private-sector job growth in the region and build upon our recent economic fortunes.

Part 2: Defense, The Port, And Tourism: The Pillars Of The Economy, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

There was (mostly) good news to report about the pillars of the Hampton Roads economy in 2024. More defense spending flowed into the region. While cargo traffic declined at the Port of Virginia in 2023, the declines were mainly driven by outbound cargo traffic. The declines at the Port were also proportionally less than many other ports across the nation. Nominal hotel revenues continued to climb, but real hotel revenues fell in 2023 as occupancy rates dipped slightly. The hotel industry, however, continued to outperform the state and the nation.

Part 3: If You Zone It, They Will Come: Housing Supply In Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

The recent rise in housing prices in Hampton Roads has priced many families out of the American dream of owning a home. Even though fewer houses sold in 2023, median single-family prices continued to rise. In this chapter, we discuss how policies and regulations may influence decisions to build and ask what can be done to increase the supply of housing in Hampton Roads.

Part 4: Public Libraries: Enriching Lives In Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University Jan 2024

Part 4: Public Libraries: Enriching Lives In Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Hampton Roads is home to 63 public libraries across 13 library systems. These public libraries do much, much more than simply lending books. Access is free, and everyone is welcome. This chapter provides an overview of Hampton Roads’ public libraries—how they function and how they are funded, and the diversity of services and resources they offer to our residents. We focus on the innovative ways that public libraries have evolved to meet their communities’ changing needs.

Part 5: Are Disability Rates Rising In Hampton Roads?, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University Jan 2024

Part 5: Are Disability Rates Rising In Hampton Roads?, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

In this chapter, we examine one particular corner of a much larger disability story – those individuals who have a work history and subsequently seek to receive income from the Social Security Administration because of that disability. Contrary to what many people believe, both the number of applications for worker disability and rates of approval of those applications have trended downward in recent years. We explore the differences in disability rates and workers across Hampton Roads.

Part 6: The Graying Of Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University Jan 2024

Part 6: The Graying Of Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

In 2010, the median age of the resident population of Hampton Roads was 35.7 years. By 2019, the median age had increased to 36.8 years, rising to 37.1 years in 2021 and 37.3 years in 2022. The number of residents aged 65 and over continued to rise. How is Hampton Roads aging compared to Virginia and the United States? In this chapter, we explore how the region is aging, how it may age in the future, and how this may impact the region’s economic prospects.

Seemingly Unrelated Research In Economics, Michael Krouse

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In my first chapter, my co-authors and I1 estimate the effect of current affective states on reported satisfaction with life. The satisfaction with life scale is a well-established measure of thriving and its use for both research and behavioral interventions requires understanding how external factors influence participants’ evaluations of their lives. We tested whether influencing participants’ affective states using videos would change their reported satisfaction with life in a representative sample of US adults (N=788). Those for whom the video improved affect reported 5.9% lower satisfaction with life compared to nonresponders (p=.008). This result was driven by young adults, women, …

This dissertation investigates whether globalization and China’s WTO accession in 2001 have any impact on government expenditure to social security transfers and human capital of its eleven neighboring countries--Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. These countries have enjoyed economic growth from intra-regional trade and foreign direct investment (FDI). Due to Chinese liberalization of trade and FDI-led growth policies, China became the favorite destination for foreign investors because of the large population providing enormous potential markets for consumption of goods and services as well as having a huge pool of low-wage workers for lower …

Punishment And Resources, Mark D. White Jan 2024

Punishment And Resources, Mark D. White

Publications and Research

Philosophers of punishment have paid little attention to resource constraints, which have an undeniable impact on how various approaches to punishment work in the real world. It has fallen on economists, with their central focus on scarcity and opportunity cost, to analyze the resource demands of different philosophies of punishment. However, the utilitarian nature of mainstream economics limits the scope of economic theories of punishment to deterrence, which fits naturally into mathematical economic techniques, as opposed to retributivism, the principled nature of which resists quantification. This chapter explores the resource implications of punishment. It starts by identifying shortcomings of the …

Key Success Factors Of Strategic Transformation For Sino-French Cooperation In The Development Of Third-Party Markets In Africa, Bin Wang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The most popular form of third-party market cooperation is an innovative international economic and trade cooperation model initiated by China under the context of the “Belt and Road” initiative nowadays. Although China and France, as non-state actors, have actively promoted trilateral cooperation and improved various agreements, the trilateral countries have not achieved effective resource complementarity due to differences in political and economic systems and goals, resulting in high complexity in the cooperation process.

Therefore, the research topic of this study is dedicated to addressing this pain point and assisting Chinese enterprises in leveraging third-party markets to expand overseas business under …
