A Study Of Residential Water Demand In And Around The Big Sioux River Basin, Jeffrey Platek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The function was based on variables for price, number of persons per household, average annual income per capita, and average monthly rainfall; (2) determine significant variables which affect residential water consumption; and (3) derive price and income elasticities which will show the response in water consumption to changes in the price of water and per capita income.

Further Investigation Into The Role Of Education In The Demand For Health Care, Mohammad Al-Hadi Al-Bakir Al-Barazi

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation intends to examine the inconsistency prevailing in the health economics literature between theoretical predictions and empirical findings concerning the role of education in the determination of health care services. Starting from the premise that the household’s stock of health capital is a nondurable commodity which depreciates over time; that it can be augmented by investment; that the household production function for gross investment in health capital stock is homogeneous of degree one in both inputs of health care services and health care time; that a ‘factor-neutral’ education enters the production function of the household as an environmental variable …

Government Regulation And The Cost Of Housing, Murray L. Weidenbaum Dec 1977

Government Regulation And The Cost Of Housing, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

One of the important factors in the rising prices in the housing market is the array of government regulations facing land developers, homebuilders, and financial institutions. Not all government regulation is bad, but the costs are often simply passed along to the consumer, essentially as a "hidden tax." This paper examines the various effects of housing regulation and outlines the procedures for change.

Major Issues Facing Agriculture As Our Nation Moves Toward A Domestic And International Food And Agricultural Policy, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It is a pleasure for me to speak this evening before such a distinguished group of agribusiness and academic representatives, all of whom have a common interest. Twenty years ago, that interest would have been denominated as "agricultural policy". Today it would be called "food policy", which presumably is a broader term. Food policy is usually defined to encompass the interests of everyone in the production and marketing process from producer to consumer. It is by no means limited geographically, but encompasses people and firms who are involved -- directly or indirectly, domestically and internationally - in the food business. …

Economic Restraints On Reduced Energy Use In Agriculture, Lowell D. Hill Oct 1977

Economic Restraints On Reduced Energy Use In Agriculture, Lowell D. Hill

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Many of the popular suggestions for improving energy use under mechanized agriculture would result in a reduction in total food supply or they are in conflict with economic decisions. This paper examines several of these suggestions and identifies the economic limits to their implementation. The choice of food products or techniques of production must be evaluated in the context of all uses of energy. Only a market system is capable of permitting every consumer to express his preferences for the infinite array of foods and energy uses.

Economics And Net Energy Analysis: Is A New Analytical Technique Needed For Energy Decision Making?, William J. Kruvant Oct 1977

Economics And Net Energy Analysis: Is A New Analytical Technique Needed For Energy Decision Making?, William J. Kruvant

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The paper attempts to evaluate the claims of Net Energy Analysis (NEA) against those of economics in a reasonably comprehensive way. The principal problems of NEA concern system boundaries, aggregation across fuels, valuing external effects, valuing human labor and valuing time. These problems seriously limit the contribution Net Energy Analysis can make to allocation decisions, and allocation Is the central problem of energy policy.

Government Regulation And The Slowdown In Innovation, Murray L. Weidenbaum Oct 1977

Government Regulation And The Slowdown In Innovation, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

The excessively rapid expansion of government regulation of business is slowing down the rate of innovation and scientific progress in the United States. The answer is not to eliminate all forms of government regulation, however. Rather, the sensible approach is to reform the existing array of regulation so as to achieve important social objectives with fewer of the adverse side effects.
