Reaganomics And The Welfare State, Mimi Abramovitz, Tom Hopkins Nov 1983

Reaganomics And The Welfare State, Mimi Abramovitz, Tom Hopkins

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Supply-side tax and spending policies have intensified poverty, unemployment and inequality, especially for women, minorities and organized labor. At the same time Reaganomics is shrinking and weakening the welfare state. To better understand and resist this conservative assault it is necessary to demystify the "economics" and "politics" of supply-side doctrine. This paper (a) defines the basic assumptions of supply-side economics; (b) identifies some of its problems and contradictions; (c) discusses its impact on the welfare state; and (d) analyzes it as part of a broader plan for coping with the current economic crisis. The Consumer Movement In The United States, Kathleen Browne Ittig

Bridgewater Review

What ever happened to the consumer movement in the United States? In stark contrast to the high visibility and widespread support enjoyed by the consumer movement during the last two decades, overt concern for consumer protection seems to have disappeared since the election of President Ronald Reagan. To answer this question it is necessary first to identify the market conditions that currently dominate the U. S. economy and second to review the history of the consumer movement as it has evolved in this country during the last eighty years.

Instability Of Government Revenue And Expenditure In Less Developed Countries, David Lim May 1983

Instability Of Government Revenue And Expenditure In Less Developed Countries, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

The governments of most less developed countries (LDCs) depend basically on their tax and non-tax revenues to finance their expenditure programmes. Unless countervailing action is taken, instability in government revenue will result in instability in government expenditure. The latter can add considerably to the complexity of fiscal management, which may then render ineffective development planning.1 It can also reduce business confidence and lead to the precautionary discounting of prospective investment returns and so a lowering of the investment level. This note does not attempt to verify the claim that expenditure instability has adverse effects on economic growth. Its aim is …

On The Effectiveness Of Agricultural Land-Use Controls, Eric Tarquin Marnell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Land resources are a valuable resource in the economic system. There exists considerable controversy surrounding the allocation of land into the competing land uses. At the heart of this controversy are agricultural land resources. The purpose of this paper is to investigate, first theoretically and second empirically, the effectiveness of controls placed on land use to keep land in agricultural production.

A theoretical conclusion is reached as to whether the free market or 1 and-use controls allocate land resources more efficiently. An empirical model is formulated to explain changes in the quantity of agricultural land as a function of several …

Worker Ownership As A Means Of Reducing Regional Unemployment And Its Application To Steel Plant Shutdowns, Peter Berg

Honors Projects

In the 1950s, the American steel industry dominated the world in steel production. It was a strong and thriving sector of our national economy. Throughout the 1970s, however, the steel industry has been in sharp decline. Foreign competition, high labor costs, periodic recessions, and lack of modernization are some of the factors that have contributed to the industry's inability to produce steel in a competitive market. These developments in the steel industry have affected not only our national economy but also the lives of one million steelworkers. The ugly economic and social effects of. unemployment have caused hardship for many …
