HIV estimation using data from the demographic and health surveys (DHS) is limited by the presence of non-response and test refusals. Conventional adjustments such as imputation require the data to be missing at random. Methods that use instrumental variables allow the possibility that prevalence is different between the respondents and non-respondents, but their performance depends critically on the validity of the instrument. Using Manski's partial identification approach, we form instrumental variable bounds for HIV prevalence from a pool of candidate instruments. Our method does not require all candidate instruments to be valid. We use a simulation study to evaluate and …
Criticizing The Asset Repatriation Policy For Tax Amnesty In Indonesia: An Interpretive And Comparative Study, Nidya Hapsari
Criticizing The Asset Repatriation Policy For Tax Amnesty In Indonesia: An Interpretive And Comparative Study, Nidya Hapsari
Jurnal Vokasi Indonesia
Indonesia finds tax amnesty as a reliable funding alternative to develop a sustainable economy. Since 1964, Indonesia has implemented five tax amnesty programs. The latest two programs would offer lower amnesty compensation rates if taxpayers repatriated offshore assets back to Indonesia. However, the tax amnesty repatriation policy merely contributed minimal amounts of repatriated assets and low number of participants. Consequently, it failed to raise sufficient liquidity, fiscal revenues, tax compliance and economic growth. Hence, the study aims to (1) determine the justification and mechanism for the asset repatriation policy and (2) criticize the repatriation policy implementation. Applying interpretive and comparative …

The Effect Of The Claim Recovery Process On Claim Payments In Insurance, Aulia Yasmin, Karin Amelia Safitri, Fachri Muslim
Jurnal Administrasi Bisnis Terapan
The policies and tactics used by an insurance company to effectively handle and recover claims are referred to as the claim recovery process policy. Ensuring total operational stability, preserving customer satisfaction, and limiting financial losses all depend on this approach. The recovery process policy is covered in this study along with how it affects how well a corporation manages risk. A review of the literature and interviews with many employees are part of the research methodology. It was discovered that one of the insurance companies in Indonesia still needed to improve (digitize) its current policy regarding the recovery process. This …

Dampak Program Bantuan Sosial Sebagai Intervensi Gizi Sensitif Terhadap Status Stunting Pada Balita, Nasa Milta Sahara, Dwini Arianto, Mahar Santoso
Jurnal Ekonomi Kesehatan Indonesia
Stunting is a significant issue for nations, affecting both public health and economic development. It results from a combination of direct and indirect causes. The government addresses stunting through specific nutritional interventions targeting direct causes and sensitive nutritional interventions for indirect causes. Given the strong link between stunting and poverty, social assistance programs (BANSOS) such as the Family Hope Program (PKH) and Rice for the Poor (RASKIN) are crucial in combating stunting by improving socioeconomic conditions. This study analyzes the impact of these social assistance programs on stunting in children under five, using data from the 2007 and 2014 Indonesian …

Hospitals receive payments through claim submissions with complete documents to the Social Security Administering Agency (BPJS) Health. However, not all inpatient claims have been submitted to BPJS Health, and there are still 16.97% pending inpatient claims. In claims that are not approved, claims can be resubmitted, but time constraints for the claim process have resulted in 2.64% of inpatient cases in 2022 not resubmitted. Qualitative research through in-depth interviews with 15 respondents aims to analyze the management of inpatient claims for BPJS Kesehatan Kebayoran Baru Hospital from November 2022 to April 2023. Length of stay (LOS) can increase hospital rates and become a cost issue for patients, potentially resulting in a discrepancy between hospital rates and INA-CBGs rates at the hospital. This study aims to determine the difference between the actual costs and BPJS claim costs for diabetic patients based on the length of stay and class level. The research method is observational with a descriptive approach. The data collection technique used retrospective medical record data from 50 patients. The results showed that the largest average difference between hospital costs and BPJS claim costs was for patients with a length of stay …

The success of a country’s health development is marked by achieving fair access to healthcare and protecting the population from financial risks of health. Household spending on healthcare, or out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses, in Indonesia, remains far above the ideal limit set by the WHO. There is a noticeable disparity in OOP health expenditures across provinces in Indonesia. The five provinces with the highest per capita OOP expenses are on Java island. This high per capita OOP spending on Java indicates potential issues with access to healthcare services and financial protection in this region. This study aims to identify factors influencing …

Jurnal Ekonomi Kesehatan Indonesia
In 2022, RSKD Duren Sawit has officially held operating room services. The demand for more comprehensive operating room services increased rapidly. The temporary operating room rates were set by adapting the rates of other regional hospitals and the Governor of DKI Jakarta's regulations. There is a huge difference in costs between the hospital rates and the INA-CBGs claim rates, especially for surgical debridement performed in the operating room. One of the factors causing the difference is the undetermined cost for debridement based on the unit cost component. Knowing the unit-cost debridement in the operating room according to the cost per …

Returns To Education For Indigenous Populations In The Us: How Women Compared To Men?, Kianna Big Crow
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Previous research finds large gaps in the labor market outcomes for the Indigenous population. Despite recent improvements, Indigenous workers lag other racial groups in terms of educational attainment and earnings. This study uses the 5-year American Community Survey Data (2018-2022) to estimate earning gains (returns to education) associated with college education for Indigenous workers and examine how Indigenous workers fare compared to workers from other racial groups. The research finds that the marginal benefit to a college education is lower for AIAN workers when compared to their white peers. In fact, the marginal benefit from a college education compared to …

Effects Of Peer Groups On The Gender-Wage Gap And Life After The Mba: Evidence From The Random Assignment Of Mba Peers, Mallika Thomas
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Using the historical random assignment of MBA students to peer groups at a top business school in the United States, I study the effect of the gender composition of a student’s peers on the gender pay gap at graduation and long-term labor market outcomes. I find that a 10 percentage point increase in the share of male peers leads to a 2.1 percent increase in the relative earnings of female students at graduation, closing the gender gap in earnings at graduation by two-thirds. The effects on women’s long-term earnings grow even larger with time. Using novel data on job offers, …
Legalized Sports Betting And Mental Health, Brad R. Humphreys, Jane Ruseski
Legalized Sports Betting And Mental Health, Brad R. Humphreys, Jane Ruseski
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Since the Supreme Court declared the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 unconstitutional in 2018, 38 states and the District of Columbia legalized face to face and/or on-line betting on sports. A potential unintended consequence of legalized sports betting is an increased risk for mental health disorders and problem gambling. Using a staggered difference-in differences framework, we exploit variation in timing of adoption of legal sports betting across states to evaluate the impact of these laws on mental health outcomes. We combine data on when states passed laws to legalize gambling with data from the Behavioral Risk Factor …

An Examination Of The Impact Of Court-Appointed Fines And Fees: How Governmental Reliance On These Expenses Is Harming Vulnerable Communities, Rachel Elizabeth Couche
Dissertations and Theses
Fines and fees are commonplace in the United States criminal justice system as a form of punishment for both minor and severe offenses. While substantial research has demonstrated that these financial consequences disproportionately affect certain communities, studies that depict a narrative of these impacts are vastly underrepresented in the field. This project expands upon past literature by delving into the effects of these practices on individuals and their families. The current study outlines the findings from a content analysis of twelve semi-structured interviews on the impacts of fines and fees in Oregon. The findings create a deeper understanding of how …
Intrahousehold Welfare: Theory And Application To Japanese Data, Pierre-André Chiappori, Costas Meghir, Yoko Okuyama
Intrahousehold Welfare: Theory And Application To Japanese Data, Pierre-André Chiappori, Costas Meghir, Yoko Okuyama
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
In this paper we develop a novel approach to measuring individual welfare within house-holds, recognizing that individuals may have both different preferences (particularly regarding public consumption) and differential access to resources. We construct a money metric mea-sure of welfare that accounts for public goods (by using personalized prices) and the allocation of time. We then use our conceptual framework to analyse intrahousehold inequality in Japan, allowing for the presence of two public goods: expenditures on children and other public goods including housing. We show empirically that women have much stronger preferences for both public goods and this has critical implications …

Who Helps Tsimane Children And Adults?, Eric Schniter, Daniel K. Cummings, Paul L. Hooper, Jonathan Stieglitz, Benjamin C. Trumble, Hillard S. Kaplan, Michael D. Gurven
ESI Working Papers
We examine various forms of helping behavior among Tsimane Amerindians of Bolivia, focusing on the provision of shelter, childcare, food, sickcare, cultural influence, and traditional story knowledge. Kin selection theory traditionally explains nepotistic nurturing of youth by closely related kin. However, less attention has been given to understanding the help provided by individuals without close genetic relatedness. To explain who provides various forms of help, we evaluate support for several predictions derived from kin selection theory. Our results show that helpers who are most often closely related and from an older generation tend to provide more costly forms of help …
Market Virtues And Respect For Human Dignity, Luís C. Calderón Gómez, Robert Talisse, John A. Weymark
Market Virtues And Respect For Human Dignity, Luís C. Calderón Gómez, Robert Talisse, John A. Weymark
Book Chapters
Luigino Bruni and Robert Sugden have provided a normative defense of markets from a virtue ethics perspective. They interpret market exchange as being a practice in the sense of Alasdair MacIntyre. For Bruni and Sugden, the telos of a market is mutual benefit and a market virtue is a character trait or disposition that contributes to the realization of this benefit. They regard market virtues as embodying a moral attitude towards market interactions that is characterized by reciprocity. For MacIntyre, this is a partial account of a virtue. To qualify as a virtue, it is also necessary that it contributes …

Discussion Papers
Poor entrepreneurs must frequently choose between business investment and children’s education. To examine this trade-off, we exploit experimental variation in short-run microenterprise growth among a sample of Indian households and track children’s education and business outcomes over eleven years. Treated households, who experience higher initial microenterprise growth, invest more in education and are one-third more likely to send children to college. However, only literate households experience child schooling gains and their enterprises stagnate in the long-run. In contrast, illiterate treatment households experience long-run business gains but declines in children’s education. Our findings suggest that microenterprise growth has the potential to …

Research is conducted into the motivations behind British colonization in Australia with an emphasis on the role of …
Catching The Unlikely Gambler : How And Why Gacha Games Appeal To Conscientious Consumers, Jingyi Zhang
Catching The Unlikely Gambler : How And Why Gacha Games Appeal To Conscientious Consumers, Jingyi Zhang
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Gacha games, often featuring Japanese anime-style characters and designs, are characterized by their eponymous gacha mechanics, wherein players obtain random virtual items using in game currency purchasable with real-world money. While scoring significant market success, gacha games are frequently likened to gambling by critics due to their chance-based purchase system. Despite this gambling-like feature, here we identify a paradoxical attraction of gacha games for individuals high in conscientiousness, a trait typically linked to self-discipline and gambling aversion. Through five behavioral experiments involving actual gacha game players, we consistently found that higher conscientiousness correlates with increased gacha game engagement, as captured …

This article is based on a study that sought to establish the dynamics that limit actions to combat child labour in small-scale gold mining communities in Tanzania. A qualitative research approach was used to gain a nuanced understanding of the contextual dynamics that limit actions to combat child labour. Other relevant data were sourced from grey literature. Thematic analysis of the collected qualitative data established that the factors limiting actions to combat child labour in small-scale gold mining communities emanate from both household settings and the community at large. The study results revealed several factors that constrain efforts to combat …
