A Study Of The Relationship Between Unemployment In Indiana And The United States, Jack W. Bell Feb 1972

A Study Of The Relationship Between Unemployment In Indiana And The United States, Jack W. Bell

Graduate Thesis Collection

Each state or region within the United States has certain unique and distinct characteristics that cause its economic performance to vary from that of the nation as a whole. Unemployment rates, as summary measures of unutilized manpower resources, frequently serve as a gauge of the general economic situation and social well-being. It is a well documented fact that unemployment is not evenly distributed througout the nation. For example, although 54% of the labor force is concetrated in the northeast and north central regions, they only account for 46% of the unemployment in recent years. This thesis focuses on the measurement …

The Heckscher-Ohlin Theorem In The Multi-Commodity Case, Jagdish N. Bhagwati Jan 1972

The Heckscher-Ohlin Theorem In The Multi-Commodity Case, Jagdish N. Bhagwati

Faculty Scholarship

Ronald Jones, in his seminal paper (1957) on Heckscher-Ohlin theory, has argued that, for the case of two countries, two factors, and several commodities, the Heckscher-Ohlin theorem would remain valid in the following weak sense: "Ordering the commodities with respect to the capital-labor ratios employed in production is to rank them in order of comparative advantage. Demand conditions merely determine the dividing line between exports and imports; it is not possible to break the chain of comparative advantage by exporting, say, the third and fifth commodities and importing the fourth when they are ranked by factor intensity" (p. 85).

Executive Appraisal: Fact Or Fantasy, Daniel John Urban Jan 1972

Executive Appraisal: Fact Or Fantasy, Daniel John Urban

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Evaluation of every employee by his superior at some time or another is a fact of life today. These appraisals take many different forms and serve an endless array of purposes. This paper was undertaken to see how well these appraisals, evaluations, ratings, and reviews actually serve the purpose for which they were created. All systems reviewed contained faults whether inherent in the system itself or in the application and administration of the system. The main faults were the using of readily available material whether or not it bore any relation to what was trying to be measured and the …

An Empirical Test Of Linder's Trade Hypothesis, James Norman Carnes Jul 1971

An Empirical Test Of Linder's Trade Hypothesis, James Norman Carnes

Economics Theses & Dissertations

Attempts have been made recently to empirically test several theories of the basis of international trade. These efforts have been concentrated mainly on the empirical testing of the Heckscher-Ohlin and the classical international trade theorems. The results so obtained are both complementary and conflicting. Although a greater degree of empirical relevance has been observed in the Ricardian model than in the Heckscher-Ohlin theorem, so far no sophisticated effort appears to have been made at the empirical testing of Linder's trade hypothesis.

Linder's thesis is that a country cannot achieve comparative cost advantage in that line of production for which there …

Digital All-Computer Simulation In Managerial Problems, Ahmed Soliman Zaki Jun 1971

Digital All-Computer Simulation In Managerial Problems, Ahmed Soliman Zaki

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Management problems are becoming more and more complex. True scientific management demands the exact consideration of all the factors that are significant to the problem under study. In dealing with practical problems, one cannot tease out separate psychological, economic, or technological aspects as the problem mostly always involves working with a total integrated organizational unit. Due to the abundancy and interrelation of these factors, it made it more difficult if not impossible in many cases to reach a solution by the analytical methods. Thus, many managerial problems if they are to be accurately identified and quantifiably solved, should be simulated. …

An Economic Appraisal Of On-Farm Water Management Practices In Developing Countries: A Study Of Summer Rice Production In Guayas Rivers Basin, Ecuador, Thomas L. White May 1971

An Economic Appraisal Of On-Farm Water Management Practices In Developing Countries: A Study Of Summer Rice Production In Guayas Rivers Basin, Ecuador, Thomas L. White

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The primary objective of this study was to examine rice production methods, with special emphasis on irrigation-water management practices used by producers from all levels of management in the Guayas River Basin, Ecuador. To do this, rice producers were divided into four categories on the basis of the level of mechanization of their operation, use of purchased inputs, and the level of investment in irrigation facilities and general management practices. The levels of investment in irrigation facilities ranged from 7,000 to 500 sucres per hectare, and mechanization of production varied from almost total use of machinery for cultivation operations to …

Financial Problems Of A Revolutionary: The Memoir Of John Wilkins, Howard L. Applegate

The Courier

In this article, Howard L. Applegate describes and includes an excerpt of the autobiography of John Wilkins, a shop owner in Pennsylvania during the American Revolution period who became a militia captain. Instead of detailing the colonial militia of the time, Wilkins related how militia members often took on significant financial burdens in order to keep the regiment intact, and lamented the rampant devaluation, inflation and speculation that occurred during this turbulent period in American history.

Two Keynesian Models Of Simultaneous Inflation And Unemployment: Comment, Craig Macphee Jan 1971

Two Keynesian Models Of Simultaneous Inflation And Unemployment: Comment, Craig Macphee

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

In his article J. Kirker Stephens demonstrates the possibility of simultaneous inflation and unemployment in a simple Keynesian model by relaxing the assumption of labor hornogeneity. As he correctly points out, most graphical and algebraic presentations of Keynesian models have not been used before lo illustrate this empirically important phenomenon. On the other hand, Professor Stephens does not explain how the problem has been analyzed before, albeit verbally, in the traditional Keynesian framework. Consequently, it may riot be readily apparent that complicating this framework with the assumption of diversified labor violates a venerable methodological rule: pluralites non est ponenda sine …

Economic Growth And The Banking System (Revised Edition), University Of New Mexico Bureau Of Business And Economic Research Jan 1971

Economic Growth And The Banking System (Revised Edition), University Of New Mexico Bureau Of Business And Economic Research

BBER Publications

The report evaluates the quantitative relationships between commercial banking structures and general economic development across eight western states during the decade of the 1960s. This report aggregates structural data from 1960 through 1970 to compare four states utilizing unrestricted statewide branch banking (SB) against four non-statewide branching states (NSB, including New Mexico). The analysis demonstrates that the branching states consistently achieved superior rates of population, employment, and personal income growth, while simultaneously maintaining higher loan-to-asset metrics, greater long-term risk capacity, and expanded geographic banking office density per capita.

Economic Sophistication In Nineteenth Century Congressional Tariff Debates, Richard C. Edwards Dec 1970

Economic Sophistication In Nineteenth Century Congressional Tariff Debates, Richard C. Edwards

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

One of the most controversial economic issues confronting the American public during the nineteenth century was that of protection. The plea for a protective tariff had been raised as soon as the First Congress met in 1789. The issue was sharply debated off and on throughout the nineteenth century but never finally resolved. There is now a large literature relating the outcome of this issue to the economic and political interests of various involved groups.

Little effort has been made, however, to assess the impact of the tariff on economic growth, employment, and the dispersion of new technology. Nor has …

Production, Price, And Inventory Theory, George A. Hay Sep 1970

Production, Price, And Inventory Theory, George A. Hay

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This paper is an attempt to derive empirically testable hypotheses regarding the principal determinants of firms' decisions on production, price, and finished goods inventory. The general approach to the problem is that many of the same factors which affect the optimal value for one variable will also influence decisions on the other two, and that a "proper" model must take into account the interdependence of these variables and the simultaneous nature of the decisions involving them. This is in contrast to literature on the theory of inventories (see Paul Darling and Michael Lovell) in which the firm is assumed to …

The Neo-Classical Contributions To The Theory Of International Trade, Mohammed Arifeen Jun 1970

The Neo-Classical Contributions To The Theory Of International Trade, Mohammed Arifeen

Economics Theses & Dissertations

In a dynamic economy some of the most challenging policy problems tend to originate in the realm of international economic relations. In the post World War II period, these problems have been intensified and become more complex. Students of international economics often feel perplexed by numerous divergent and diametric views that well-trained and prudent men frequently offer for the solutions of what appear to be rather simple problems. Lack of understanding of the theoretical framework of international trade is largely responsible for students' puzzlement.

It is the purpose of this thesis to assemble a minimum framework of the theoretical issues …

An Economic Analysis Of The Predator Problem In The Range-Sheep Industry In Utah, David Murray Curle May 1970

An Economic Analysis Of The Predator Problem In The Range-Sheep Industry In Utah, David Murray Curle

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The economic effects, to the Utah range-sheep operation and to the economy of the state of Utah, of predation upon sheep were studied by use of a personal interview survey. This survey sampled 20 percent of the range-sheep operations in Utah.

The sheep and lamb death loss from predation was found to be 61.0 sheep and lambs per 1,000 head of ewes in fiscal 1969. The survey. also showed that 71.36 percent of the losses were lambs and 28.64 percent were ewes.

The total economic loss to Utah sheep ranchers was calculated to be 1,062,502 dollars as a result of …
