Lesson Plan: Income And Food Options, Center For Urban Resilience

Module 05: Public Health & Water Quality

Students will explore the relationship between the availability of affordable, high quality (nutritious and fresh) food and health by watching a You Tube video and reading a narrative about food deserts. Students will then investigate the food options which are available to them and consider their daily food choices in light of that which is recommended for healthy living. To end the lesson, student will consider some factors associated with cardiovascular disease and reflect on their food choices in light of that information. Given their food choices, students will be asked to reflect on what factors most influence the food …

Lesson Plan: Green Space And Public Health, Center For Urban Resilience

Module 05: Public Health & Water Quality

The purpose of this lesson is to continue exploring characteristics of urban areas that promote public health. Specifically, this lesson focuses on how green space improves neighborhood health by providing space for recreation, which decreases obesity. The lesson begins by having students brainstorm how they typically spend their time during a day off on a snowy day in the winter and a sunny day in the summer. Next, students work in groups either by making calculations using a website or looking at data tables to investigate how living near green space can affect an individual’s activities and the number of …

Lesson Plan: Green Space, Social Networks And Crime, Center For Urban Resilience

Module 05: Public Health & Water Quality

The purpose of this lesson is to investigate how green space influences the interactions between people in cities. Specifically, the lesson focuses on the idea that increased green space provides a location where social networks can be established and supported. Social networks affect health by improving collaboration and the transmission of knowledge. Green space can also reduce conflict and stress in the neighborhood, which can reduce crime. The lesson starts with students brainstorming what they think is the relationship between the amount of available green space and the interactions between people in cities. The students conduct an activity that focuses …

Lesson Plan - Public Health Action Plan, Center For Urban Resilience

Module 05: Public Health & Water Quality

The purpose of this lesson is to revisit the driving question introduced in lesson 1 of this module: How can I make my neighborhood a healthier place to live? Students synthesize what they have learned across the module - that healthy neighborhoods have green space, robust social networks, effective waste delivery and waste removal, clean air and healthy foods. They use this general information to analyze a proposed exercise path. Students work in groups to address the action plan topic for this module: resources, both social and material. For this action plan, there is a specific focus on discussing resources …

How Do Vanhorniidae (Hymenoptera) Parasitize Eucnemidae (Coleoptera)?, Jyrki Muona Apr 2021

How Do Vanhorniidae (Hymenoptera) Parasitize Eucnemidae (Coleoptera)?, Jyrki Muona

Insecta Mundi

The relationship between the beetle family Eucnemidae and the parasitic proctotrupoid family Vanhorniidae is discussed. The only proven host for Vanhornia eucnemidarum Crawford in North America is an undetermined species of the genus Isorhipis Boisduval and Lacordaire. In Europe, the only known host for Vanhornia leileri Hedqvist is Hylis cariniceps (Reitter). The biologies of the hosts differ radically and it appears unlikely that they could be parasitized in a typical proctotrupoid fashion in which eggs are placed in or on the host larva. This supports the hypothesis that small Vanhorniidae larvae attach themselves to the newly hatched beetle larvae, before …

Body States Of Asian Elephants Within And Around Protected Areas In The Salakpra Wildlife Sanctuary, Kanchanaburi, Thailand, Caitlyn Thai Apr 2021

Body States Of Asian Elephants Within And Around Protected Areas In The Salakpra Wildlife Sanctuary, Kanchanaburi, Thailand, Caitlyn Thai

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers are becoming increasingly aware that studying a species’ landscape of fear or, more broadly, their emotional states, can better inform cognitive questions about how animals navigate their environments. Vigilance behaviors are one way to determine how certain species perceive and respond to risky situations. Due to rapid environmental change, large animals such as elephants are experiencing risky encounters with humans more often than ever before. This study aims to investigate Asian elephants’ expressions of body states and how they might regulate their behavior based on perceived environmental risk or change. Specifically, we investigated the behavioral responses of Asian elephants …

208— Describing Genetic Diversity In A Non-Native Ant-Mimicking Spider, Cassidy Mills, Jennifer L. Apple

GREAT Day Posters

The ant-mimicking spider Myrmarachne formicaria (Salticidae) is a species native to Eurasia and was first identified in North America in 2001. It has since been found in many locations in the Northeast including western New York, western Pennsylvania, northeastern Ohio, and southern Ontario. Little is known about its introduction to North America and how it has dispersed since. By characterizing the mitochondrial genetic diversity of this species, we can learn about its introduction history and dispersal patterns in North America. Sequencing of a 600-bp mitochondrial DNA gene region spanning the 16s rRNA, leucine tRNA, and part of the ND1 gene …

281— Insect Soundscapes In Western New York, Sarah Metz, Mackenzie Bancroft, Dana Moukaled

GREAT Day Posters

Recent assessments of insect populations suggest significant declines in abundance and diversity across the globe. These assessments have not included western New York, so it is important to gain an understanding of the insect diversity and abundance in our local habitats, particularly grasslands. One noninvasive way to sample insect populations is to record the acoustic signals used by these animals. Male insects of several taxa advertise for mates in the late summer by producing species-specific vocalizations at potential breeding sites. We are using acoustic recordings to examine three local sites for their use by singing insects. Acoustic recordings collected during …

085— Success Of Batesian Mimicry In The Ant-Mimicking Spider Myrmarachne Formicaria, Niaomi Vanalstine, Julia Ophals

GREAT Day Posters

Myrmarachne formicaria (Salticidae) is an ant-mimicking spider which arrived in North America fairly recently, first noted in Ohio in 2001. It is important to understand how M. formicaria will impact other species as it spreads throughout North America. The goal of this study was to assess the success of Batesian mimicry used by the ant-mimicking spider in avoiding predation when in a staged encounter with another salticid spider. Myrmarachne formicaria mimic ants in the movement of their forelegs to resemble ant antennae, as well as bob their abdomen. The predator spiders were placed in a small petri dish with either …

Too Little Ph: How Freshwater Acidification Impacts The Abundance Of Macrophytes Consumed By Rusty Crayfish, Lauren Tucker, Paul Moore Dr., Jay Jones Mr. Apr 2021

Too Little Ph: How Freshwater Acidification Impacts The Abundance Of Macrophytes Consumed By Rusty Crayfish, Lauren Tucker, Paul Moore Dr., Jay Jones Mr.

Honors Projects

Anthropogenic activities such as the burning of fossil fuels result in increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration. High levels of atmospheric CO2 cause chemical shifts in the carbon cycle. Changes in the carbon cycle due to increased CO2 levels lead to ocean and freshwater acidification. Freshwater acidification is problematic for species that synthesize their own shells as well as species that use olfaction for decision-making. Rusty crayfish (Faxonius rusticus) were subject to simulated freshwater acidification and fed two types of macrophyte, Chara (Chara braunii) and Myriopyllum (Myriophyllum sibiricum). A series …

Lesson Plan - Land Use Game: Complex Decisions, Center For Urban Resilience

Module 02: Land Use

The purpose of this lesson is for students to simulate decisions that may influence land use patterns in a city. To do this, the students will play a board game that has both mandated Policy Event cards and decision cards that students control. The decision cards consist of three potential options and each option has different monetary, ecological, and social consequences. The students play the game in groups of two to three and then discuss the impacts of their decisions on the future of their city. The lesson concludes with a discussion of how well the data collection went and …
