Lesson Plan: Different Measures Of Biodiversity, Center For Urban Resilience
Lesson Plan: Different Measures Of Biodiversity, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The goal of this lesson is to introduce students to different methods of calculating biodiversity and to consider how different biodiversity indices are sensitive to species richness and species evenness. This lesson builds off of the previous lesson where students brainstormed different ways of determining biodiversity. The first activity engages students in developing a way to evaluate which cell-phone plan is best. The goal of the first activity of this lesson is to help students to understand that there are multiple ways to measure something. The second activity introduces four measures of biodiversity (species richness, species evenness, Simpson’s Index and …

Lesson Plan: Setting Up The Biodiversity Investigation, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The purpose of this lesson is to connect the issues around biodiversity to the students’ field site. The lesson starts with a class discussion where students talk about what they believe the bird biodiversity is at their field site, and whether or not they believe it is likely to be higher in some areas compared to others. Then in groups students develop the research question they will be investigating in this module as well as their predictions for that research question. Students will return to this investigation four times during the module to collect data and then to analyze the …

Lesson Plan: Identifying Birds, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The purpose of this lesson is to familiarize students with taxonomy and basic birding skills, including using binoculars, navigating field guides and identifying birds. The lesson begins with a discussion of taxonomy and the importance of naming or identifying birds. The students are introduced to both the binoculars and field guides before they go outside to conduct a bird binocular race. During the binocular race, students use binoculars and field guides to identify pictures of birds on laminated cards. If time permits, students can practice their skills on a bird walk around the schoolyard. They will use these birding skills …

Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The purpose of this lesson is for students to begin collecting observations in order to answer their research question as part of their field investigation and to inform their action plan. The lesson begins with a review of how to identify birds with the students identifying four birds shown in a PowerPoint. In their groups, students discuss their data collection protocol before they head outside. Students go outside to collect their first set of bird biodiversity data. The reflection question for today focuses on whether students need to revise or refine their methodologies in order to collect appropriate data for …

Lesson Plan: Biodiversity Game, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The purpose of this lesson is to help students think about the factors that impact the biodiversity of an ecosystem as well as the characteristics of a community that allow it to be more sustainable. This lesson begins with a discussion on various factors that may impact the biodiversity of an area. Students then play a game to illustrate the idea that the more biodiverse a community, the more likely it is to survive various environmental impacts (it is more sustainable). Students will then read about and discuss factors that reduce biodiversity. When they play the game again, students will …
Evaluating The Effects Of Temperature And Time Of Day On The Activity Of Captive Western Lowland Gorillas (Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla), Jennifer Ryan, William Volpe, Emily Mauser, Laura Dehart, Angela Perretti, Maddy Vandevere
Anthropology & Sociology Student Work
Research on captive animals reaps substantial benefits for conservation, education, and enrichment efforts. As more species become displaced in their natural habitats, it is the job of the researcher to better understand how these animals behave in captivity. To contribute to these efforts, we have been observing the activity budgets of a group of captive western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) (1 adult male, 2 subadult males, 2 adult females, 2 infant/juveniles) at the Philadelphia Zoo. Over a period of 16 non-consecutive months, we conducted 30-minute focals with 2-minute scan samples on the gorillas (54.66 hours), recording time of day, …
Pre- And Post-Partum Observations Of Signature Whistle Characteristics Of The Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops Truncatus), Robert Dutchen
Pre- And Post-Partum Observations Of Signature Whistle Characteristics Of The Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops Truncatus), Robert Dutchen
Theses and Dissertations
This study analyzes whistle usage in an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin during birth. Findings show the mother produces two predominant whistle contours. Congruities between the whistles were compared and showed that the type 1 contour bears structural similarity to the first component of the type 2 contour, indicating combinatorial whistle construction.
Influence Of Group Change On Scent Marking In A Wild Population Of Verreaux’S Sifaka (Propithecus Verreauxi), Julia C. Dickerson
Influence Of Group Change On Scent Marking In A Wild Population Of Verreaux’S Sifaka (Propithecus Verreauxi), Julia C. Dickerson
Theses and Dissertations
This study analyzed scent marking rates of wild Verreaux’s sifaka during dispersals to investigate the impact of group changes on olfactory communication. Our results indicate that scent marking is affected by changes in group structure, but other methods of communication likely play a larger role in mediating group membership changes.

Aspen Bibliography
European aspen (Populus tremula L.) is a keystone species for biodiversity of boreal forests. Large-diameter aspens maintain the diversity of hundreds of species, many of which are threatened in Fennoscandia. Due to a low economic value and relatively sparse and scattered occurrence of aspen in boreal forests, there is a lack of information of the spatial and temporal distribution of aspen, which hampers efficient planning and implementation of sustainable forest management practices and conservation efforts. Our objective was to assess identification of European aspen at the individual tree level in a southern boreal forest using high-resolution photogrammetric point cloud …
Effects Of Tropical Cyclones On Incubation And Hatch Frequency Of Marine Turtles In Broward County, Fl: An Exploratory Look For Potential Cues Of Environmentally Cued Hatching (Ech), Alexis Peterson
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Due to climate change and warming sea surface temperatures (SST), the intensity and frequency of tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic are continuing to increase. Tropical cyclones have many direct and indirect effects on coastal and marine species, such as sea turtles. Sea turtles are extremely vulnerable to climate change, due to having life history, physiology, and behavioral traits that are heavily influenced by environmental factors (Fuentes and Porter 2013). This study examined whether tropical cyclones serve as a triggering event for environmentally cued hatching (ECH) in loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green (Chelonia mydas) turtle nests …

Anthropology & Sociology Student Work
The benefits of enrichment and proper husbandry protocols and their applicability in wildlife research have been important topics of zoological research. Examining activity budgets of various species throughout zoological facilities reap biological, educational and conservation benefits. We collected data on the behavioral responses of five western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) (1 adult male, 2 adult females, 2 infants/juveniles) to a novel climbing structure in the outdoor enclosure at the Philadelphia Zoo. Over a period of 53 nonconsecutive months, we conducted 30-minute focals with 2-minute scan samples on the gorillas (488 total observation hours). We recorded frequency of behaviors for …
