The Effects Of Forest Harvesting On Small Mammals In Western Newfoundland And Its Significance To Marten, Brian Tucker
The Effects Of Forest Harvesting On Small Mammals In Western Newfoundland And Its Significance To Marten, Brian Tucker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The depauperate fauna of Newfoundland provides a limited prey base for marten. Only two small mammal prey species, Microtus pennsylvanicus and Sorex cinereus, were found in any abundance in the old-growth forests of the study area. Of these two, Microtus displayed population fluctuations typical of most microtines. Analysis of marten scats indicated that Microtus is a very important prey item to the marten with other food. items being of lesser importance particularly when Microtus are abundant.
Trapping in various habitats indicated that Sorex densities were three to five times higher in logged areas compared to uncut areas. Unfortunately, the …
The Feasibility Of River Otter Reintroduction In Northern Utah, Joel P. Bich
The Feasibility Of River Otter Reintroduction In Northern Utah, Joel P. Bich
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this thesis is to document river otter (Lutra canadensis) distribution and reintroduction potential in northern Utah. Distribution was studied using data from 3 sources: 1) otter sighting records from Utah Division of Wildlife Resources; 2) surveys of Utah furbearer trappers and natural resources personnel; and 3) searches of streams for otter sign. Potential for river otter habitat/reintroduction was evaluated by assessing food, cover, and reintroduction attributes. Streams were ranked using an evaluation system based on data from the otter literature.
Forty-six positive otter sightings were made in Utah by trappers, natural resources personnel, and the …
Acquisition Of Forgaging Skills By Lambs Eating Grass Or Shrub, Enrique R. Flores
Acquisition Of Forgaging Skills By Lambs Eating Grass Or Shrub, Enrique R. Flores
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
I studied the acquisition of foraging skills by lambs eating shrub or grass in three experiments. The general approach was to isolate those skills involved in prehending forage from those related to the acceptance of novel foods. Treatment lambs received 15 times more exposure to grass or shrub than did control lambs. Lambs were tested in 2.5 x 2.5 meter monocultures of shrub or grass 5 min/d, on two separate occasions. Height, bulk density and spatial arrangement of plant material were controlled during testing.
In Experiment 1, I studied the acquisition of foraging skills by lambs on monocultures of shrubs. …
Nesting And Habitat Parameters For Selected Raptors In The Desert Of Northwestern Utah, David L. Peterson
Nesting And Habitat Parameters For Selected Raptors In The Desert Of Northwestern Utah, David L. Peterson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study examined the effects of habitat parameters, disturbances and predation on the reproductive success of golden eagles (Aguila chrysaetos), ferruginous hawks (Buteo regalis), red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) and prairie falcons (Falco mexicanus) in the desert area southwest of the Great Salt Lake in northwestern Utah.
The prairie falcon was the only species examined that had a normal reproductive output during the study years of 1984-1986. The prairie falcon was better able to utilize the avian prey species which were very difficult for the larger and slower raptor species to capture. During …
Effect Of Fertilization On Woody Plant Chemistry: The Role In Diet Selection By Goats, Amanuel Gobena
Effect Of Fertilization On Woody Plant Chemistry: The Role In Diet Selection By Goats, Amanuel Gobena
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Lack of forage quantity and quality limit livestock production during the dry season in northeast Brazil. Coppice produced following cutting of tree species in this area has the potential to increase forage quantity and quality during the dry season, because trees that coppice retain green foliage throughout most of the dry season. However, the palatability of coppice is often low.
From a theoretical standpoint, woody plants with inherently slow growth rate should be less palatable to herbivores than plants with inherently fast growth rates, because plants that grow slowly allocate more carbon to compounds such as tannins and resins that …

Age And Growth Of The Tautog, Tautoga Onitis (Pisces: Labridae), From Lower Chesapeake Bay And Coastal Waters Of Virginia, E. Brian Hostetter
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The tautog, Tautoga onitis (Pisces: Labridae), is rapidly gaining popularity in Virginia by anglers, spearfishermen and specialized commercial interests. In Virginia, tautog are seasonally abundant on hard bottom substrates in nearshore (ca. 2-10 m) habitats and inhabit offshore wrecks and reef areas (ca. 10-30 m) year round. Habitat restriction and slow growth of the species coupled with recent technological advances in marine electronics which simplify locating tautog populations by user groups may contribute to overexploitation of tautog within the region.
Tautog were collected over a two year period from the lower Chesapeake Bay and nearshore waters of the Atlantic Ocean …
Foraging Behavior And Switching By The Grasshopper Sparrow Ammodramus Savannarum Searching For Multiple Prey In A Heterogeneous Environment, Anthony Joern
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Switching among four alternative grasshopper species by the grasshop- per sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum) through frequency-dependent predation was ex- amined. Grasshoppers were presented against a heterogeneous natural background in an outdoor aviary where total density was held constant but relative density of each grasshopper species varied. Switching among prey, primarily between two of the four species, and inter-bird variability in switching was observed. Species-specific prefer- ences and interactions among the alternative grasshopper species affected the final diet choice as one grasshopper species was always preferentially selected and another disregarded independent of changes in relative density. Attributes of avian foraging behavior, including: …
Draft Management Plan For The Perth Metropolitan Purse Seine Fishery, P. Millington
Draft Management Plan For The Perth Metropolitan Purse Seine Fishery, P. Millington
Fisheries Management Papers
As part of a development strategy for inshore purse seine fishing along the Western Australian coast this plan proposes management measures for the purse seine fishing boats operating along the coast near the greater Perth Metropolitan area. Using as a basis the restricted entry Cockburn sound purse seine fishery, the plan proposes the introduction of a limited entry regime for inshore purse seine fishing between Lancelin to just south of Mandurah. This regime will permit management of the available pelagic fish stocks in the area and also protect the economic position of the existing participants by providing an environment for …
Spatial Memory In Pigeons On A Four-Arm Radial Maze, Robert H.I. Dale
Spatial Memory In Pigeons On A Four-Arm Radial Maze, Robert H.I. Dale
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Pigeon spatial memory was examined using a four-arm radial maze. The maze had four arms, spaced at 90° intervals, extending radially from a central choice area. Subjects were forced into three arms, then permitted two choices to enter the remaining ann. Five subjects chose accurately (90% correct) with delays of 5 min or less, their choices depended on extramaze cues, and the food in the target arm provided no essential cues. After an incorrect first choice, subjects' second choices were more accurate than chance. These data suggest that, while spatial memory has many similar characteristics in rats and pigeons, pigeon …

First paragraph:
A bat netted in the ZH Canyon in the Sierra Vieja Mountains, 9 mi. W Valentine, Presidio Co., Texas, appears to be the first record of the western red bat (Lasiurus blossevillii teliotis) from the state of Texas. The specimen is an adult female that was taken on the night of 15 July 1969 by T. R. Mollhagen. The vegetation in ZH Canyon is typical low desert scrub but permanent water is present. Nets were placed in such positions as to catch bats attempting to drink at this water source.

Environmental Assessment Of Las Vegas Wash And Lake Mead Artificial Wetlands Demonstration Project, John R. Baker, R. M. Gersberg, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Publications (WR)
The effective use of artificial wetlands for treatment of municipal wastewater is well documented; however, design and economic data for artificial wetlands development are limited (Gersberg et al., 1984a). This is due partly to regional differences in climate, soils, and vegetation and partly to the desired waste treatment. As a result, specific treatment levels and cost benefits relative to the use of an artificial wetlands for a particular site cannot be evaluated adequately without a pilot demonstration project. Las Vegas Wash receives sewage effluent from the Las Vegas metropolitan area and has been designated as a wetlands community park. Las …

The Bog Forest Community At Cranberry Glades, West Virginia, Amy Casdorph Kokesh
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
An investigation of the Bog Forest Community of the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area and Cranberry Wilderness/ Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia, revealed a dominance of mixed conifers and northern hardwoods. The composition of the forest was determined through vegetational analysis of the forest strata using the list-count quadrat method. Tsuqa canadensis, Betula alleqhaniensis, Prunus serotina, and Picea rubens were dominant while eight additional species in the arboreal stratum were found to be tolerant subordinates. Rhododendron maximum dominated the understory/shrub stratum forming thickets along the interior boundary of the bog forest. The herbaceous stratum was characterized by species generally affiliated with …

Fisheries Research Reports
Information available on the abundance of tuna off north west Australia, gathered on surveys by both ship and aircraft, the presented in order to identify opportunities for the sourcing of raw material for the Western Australian tuna canning industry. Identification of the constraints and potential for industry development of these resources is made focusing on the area considered most favourable, types of vessels used, fishing methods and strategies required for the development of such resources in the event that there is some identified prospect of viable commercial development.
The Spatial Memory Of Clark’S Nutcrackers (Nucifraga Columbiana) In An Analogue Of The Radial Arm Maze, Russel P. Balda, Alan Kamil
The Spatial Memory Of Clark’S Nutcrackers (Nucifraga Columbiana) In An Analogue Of The Radial Arm Maze, Russel P. Balda, Alan Kamil
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Clark’s nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana) use spatial memory to recover stored food in the field. In the present experiments, an open-field analogue of the radial arm maze was developed and used to test the ability of nutcrackers to remember spatial locations. The nutcrackers showed high levels of retention after 6 h, but were close to chance levels after a 24-h retention interval. These results suggest that nutcrackers may use different spatial memory systems under different conditions. After long retention intervals, nutcrackers performed more accurately than pigeons tested by other experimenters using similar procedures. This raises the possibility of species …
The South West Trawl Fishery Draft Management Plan., P. J. Millington
The South West Trawl Fishery Draft Management Plan., P. J. Millington
Fisheries Management Papers
This paper outlines a proposal for management of trawl fisheries operating in waters less than 200m deep between the Moore River north of Perth and Cape Leeuwin. Off Fremantle, potential and actual user conflicts between trawling and the requirements of recreational fishing and other forms of commercial fishing point to the need to gradually phase out trawling in this area. A limited entry fishery, with no licence transferability, is therefore proposed.

Sport Fishing For Marron In Western Australia - Management For The Future : A Discussion Paper On Management Options For The Marron Fishery., Fisheries Department Of Western Australia.
Fisheries Management Papers
The number of marron that may be caught each year without seriously jeopardising the long term future of fishery is limited. The situation deteriorated still further after another winter of low rainfall in 1987 and as the 1987-88 summer drew closer it became doubtful whether the State's marron stocks could withstand another season of hard fishing pressure. Thus, it was considered necessary to ban all fishing for marron during the 1987-88 season. This discussion paper has been prepared to help start the ball rolling in the right direction, and ensure any measures taken to safeguard the fishery are backed up …
Fisheries Management Paper No. 22 - Economics And Marketing Of Western Australian Pilchards., Scp Fisheries Consultants Pty Ltd
Fisheries Management Paper No. 22 - Economics And Marketing Of Western Australian Pilchards., Scp Fisheries Consultants Pty Ltd
Fisheries Management Papers
Most of the Western Australian pilchard catch comes from King George Sound and from the southern coast off Albany where the number of vessels allowed to catch has been controlled. Prospects for increasing production in this area are limited. However, there are indications that considerable quantities of pilchards could be caught in waters to the east and west of Albany, in the inshore declared purse seine development zone.
Before allowing fisherman to catch more pilchards in these waters, the Western Australian Government decided that an investigation should be undertaken of the Australian pilchard resources, the domestic and export market situation …

A Comparative-Ecological Approach To The Study Of Learning, Alan Kamil, John E. Mauldin
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the effects of a parameter which is present in every learning experiment, but about which we know relatively little--the species being tested. The effects of the species variable have been studied relatively infrequently by animal learning psychologists for at least three reasons. (1) Psychologists have tended to assume that a few general processes will account entirely for most, if not all, of the important phenomena of animal learning in a broad range of species. This assumption has been criticized frequently in recent years (e.g., Seligman, 1970; Seligman & Hager, 1972), but still …

Comments On Estimating Population Rate Of Increase From Age Frequency Data, C. Renn Tumlison, V. Rick Mcdaniel
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Although many papers have described assumptions and calculations of r from different kinds of data, none has compared estimates of r for the same real data set under different assumptions. We used the age distributions of gray foxes collected during six trapping seasons to estimate and compare r and lₓ series derived under different assumptions. Because trapped foxes are killed, they are believed by some to represent death history data. We found this treatment underestimates mortality so overestimates survivorship and leads to erroneous conclusions about the population. Use of a projection matrix allowed prediction of population size and thus allowed …
Sex Ratios In Bobcat Populations, C. Renn Tumlison, V. Rick Mcdaniel
Sex Ratios In Bobcat Populations, C. Renn Tumlison, V. Rick Mcdaniel
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Reported sex ratios in bobcat populations have suggested great variation ranging from strong male bias to strong female bias. Explanations offered for these observations have included factors of mobility, activity, behavior, inaccurate data collection, hunting pressure, and population density. Ratios are probably most representative during the winter, when females are no longer under constraints of parental care. Sex determination should be made by experienced observers and preferably through internal examination. The most productive direction for interpretation of validated ratios appears to be in terms of population density, hunting pressure, and the timing of harvest.
Factors Affecting Annual Deer Harvest In Arkansas, Richard A. Kluender, T. Bentley Wigley Jr., Michael E. Cartwright
Factors Affecting Annual Deer Harvest In Arkansas, Richard A. Kluender, T. Bentley Wigley Jr., Michael E. Cartwright
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
An understanding of general forces affecting annual harvest is essential to the management of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). A predictive model based on such factors would be valuable to managers. The relationship between 27 different variables and annual, legal deer harvest in Arkansas was evaluated for 1957-1986. Variables most affecting harvest were soybean acreage, hay acreage, number of days in the deer season, rain during the deer season, and total state timber production, total state pulpwood production, and deer harvest 2 years prior. Because significant autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity were present in the variables, log-linear, first differencing and non-linear quasi-Newton regression …

Forest Habitat Use By White-Tailed Deer In The Arkansas Coastal Plain, T. B. Wigley Jr., M. E. Garner
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Forest habitat use by five radio-equipped white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) was monitored in the Arkansas Coastal Plain during 1982-84. The deer were located 821 times. Use of forest types was compared to expected use as calculated from availability. The study area was also divided into 491 two-hectare cells for which timber characteristics and number of deer locations were determined. Pine sawtimber was the most heavily used forest type in all seasons and was used more often than expected during spring. Also used more than expected were brushy areas (clearcut but not site prepared) during spring, summer and fall and openings …
