Examining Downshear Reformation In Tropical Cyclones, Nathalie Rivera Torres Jan 2024

Examining Downshear Reformation In Tropical Cyclones, Nathalie Rivera Torres

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

The development of a new low-level circulation center in tropical cyclones, known as downshear reformation, can lead to sudden changes in storm structure and intensity, representing a challenge in forecasting tropical cyclones. This phenomenon is commonly observed in weak tropical cyclones (e.g., tropical depressions, tropical storms) experiencing moderate to strong vertical wind shear (> 5 m s-1), when the vertical wind shear organizes convection in the downshear region of the tropical cyclone, and lower-tropospheric vorticity is generated within the intense convection. Downshear reformation has been proposed as a mechanism for intensification, sometimes rapidly, in tropical cyclones under unfavorable environmental wind …

Enhancing A Computer Model To Evaluate Rainwater Harvesting And Reuse Strategies For Landscape Irrigation Under Current And Future Climate Conditions, Siyu Li Jan 2024

Enhancing A Computer Model To Evaluate Rainwater Harvesting And Reuse Strategies For Landscape Irrigation Under Current And Future Climate Conditions, Siyu Li

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Urbanization and climate change have detrimental impacts on water quantity and quality. Rainwater harvesting/reuse for landscape irrigation with rain barrels/cisterns, which can assist urban hydrological/water quality restoration and provide a beneficial resource for irrigating landscape, holds significant potentials in urban areas under current and future climates. However, the impacts of rainwater harvesting/reuse strategies for landscape irrigation under a changing climate need to be comprehensively evaluated to assist decision-making. In addition, a comprehensive tool is needed to help stakeholders develop efficient strategies to harvest rainwater for landscape irrigation with rain barrels/cisterns.

To address the needs, the simulation of the sub-daily hydrological …

The Behemoth Of The Last Ice Age: The Evolutionary Saga Of The Columbian Mammoth In North America, Nathaniel Valentine Jan 2024

The Behemoth Of The Last Ice Age: The Evolutionary Saga Of The Columbian Mammoth In North America, Nathaniel Valentine

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

The Columbian’s mammoth evolutionary history can be traced back to the origin of life and its evolutionary lineage can be tracked down by examining select species over geologic time. I conducted a literature review with multiple scientific journals to identify key transitional species that trace their lineage to the Columbian mammoth. Transitional species were selected from the Precambrian and the various periods of the Phanerozoic which exhibited vertebrate-like body structures and behaviors. Evidence suggests that early vertebrate-like animals were present by the Cambrian period. Mammal evolution would continue in the Mesozoic era and radiate in the Cenozoic era. The Columbian …

Groundwater Flow And Water Clarity At Cenotes In The Yucatan Peninsula, Laura Rossana Fracica Gonzalez Jan 2024

Groundwater Flow And Water Clarity At Cenotes In The Yucatan Peninsula, Laura Rossana Fracica Gonzalez

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Characterizing and predicting groundwater flow in complex karst aquifers poses significant challenges. This study explores the potential application of Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) technology for in-situ groundwater flow measurement within sinkholes (cenotes) in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Two specific questions are addressed: 1) Can ADCP determine flow within Yucatan Peninsula sinkholes? 2) Are groundwater flow vectors related to water clarity in open cenotes? The geological setting of the Yucatan Platform is characterized by horizontal sedimentary strata with highly permeable limestones and extensive karst features. The research focuses on the Holbox fracture zone, where groundwater flow dynamics remain elusive. The …

Temporal And Spatial Connectivity And The Impacts Of Hydropower In The Magdalena River Basin, Colombia, Serena Lynn Butler Jan 2024

Temporal And Spatial Connectivity And The Impacts Of Hydropower In The Magdalena River Basin, Colombia, Serena Lynn Butler

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Tropical regions hold untapped hydropower potential, but dam construction often adversely impacts multiple dimensions of connectivity in river systems, rigorous evaluation of which is often lacking. This study investigates temporal and spatial dimensions of longitudinal and lateral connectivity in the Magdalena River Basin, Colombia, a region with ongoing and planned hydropower projects. Limited in-situ monitoring data is a common challenge in tropical rivers. To address this, we utilized satellite imagery from Landsat (via Google Earth Engine) and Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) data. We examined alterations in the flow regime over time and relative to dam construction. We also …

10be Dating Of Last Glacial Maximum Moraines And Subsequent Glacial Retreat In Chirripó National Park, Costa Rica, Caleb Emeka Okpala Jan 2024

10be Dating Of Last Glacial Maximum Moraines And Subsequent Glacial Retreat In Chirripó National Park, Costa Rica, Caleb Emeka Okpala

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; ~26-19 ka) and Termination 1 (~19-12 ka), the expansion and retreat of glaciers across the Southern and Northern Hemispheres, as well as other paleoclimate proxies, document a complex pattern of global climate change. While the timing and magnitude of LGM cooling and subsequent warming is relatively well constrained in mid- and high-latitude regions across both hemispheres, less information is available about climate changes in the tropics. To provide more information about tropical climate conditions during the LGM and Termination 1, I mapped and dated the extents of past glaciers in two valleys in Chirripó …

A Bayesian Inversion For Emissions And Export Productivity Across The End-Cretaceous Boundary, Alexander A. Cox Jan 2024

A Bayesian Inversion For Emissions And Export Productivity Across The End-Cretaceous Boundary, Alexander A. Cox

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

The end-Cretaceous mass extinction was marked by both the Chicxulub impact and the ongoing emplacement of the Deccan Traps flood basalt province. Both of these events perturbed the environment by the emission of climate-active volatiles, primarily CO2 and SO2. To understand the mechanism of extinction, we must disentangle the timing, duration, and intensity of volcanic and meteoritic environmental forcings. In this thesis, we used a parallel Markov chain Monte Carlo approach to invert for the aforementioned volatile emissions, export productivity, and remineralization from 67 to 65 million years ago using the LOSCAR (Long-term Ocean-atmosphere-Sediment CArbon cycle Reservoir) model. The parallel …

Geoelectrical And Hydrochemical Characterization Of Submarine Groundwater Discharge In Florida Bay, Ifeanyi Emmanuel Eze Jan 2024

Geoelectrical And Hydrochemical Characterization Of Submarine Groundwater Discharge In Florida Bay, Ifeanyi Emmanuel Eze

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Florida Bay, situated at the southern tip of Everglades National Park and underlain by the Miami Limestone formation, is an ecosystem of global significance. Over the past century, the bay has faced threats such as droughts, seagrass mortality, and hypersalinity. Despite various studies and management efforts, the dynamics of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in the region remain underexplored. Given that SGD plays a significant role in the chemical dynamics of coastal ecosystems, it warrants thorough investigation. This study aims to characterize the spatial and temporal patterns of SGD in Florida Bay by surveying three basins – Rankin, Whipray, and Rabbit …

Diatom Productivity And Nutrient Dynamics In The Ross Sea, Antarctica During Warm Events In The Neogene, Marialena Christopoulou Jan 2024

Diatom Productivity And Nutrient Dynamics In The Ross Sea, Antarctica During Warm Events In The Neogene, Marialena Christopoulou

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Increased melting of the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) in recent decades, has had a significant impact on many aspects of the global ocean. Models indicate that by the end of the 21st century atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations may exceed 500 ppm, and the average global temperature will likely warm by more than 2°C. However, data that provide model constraints on potential feedbacks in ice-ocean-atmosphere system are limited by short-timescales (e.g., decadal- to centennial-scale) and incomplete spatial coverage. In particular, little is known about the impacts of future warming and widespread melting of AIS on marine biological productivity, silicate weathering …

Hunting Types In North American Eocene And Oligocene Carnivores And Implications For Nimravid Extinction, Miguel Andres Castellanos Jan 2024

Hunting Types In North American Eocene And Oligocene Carnivores And Implications For Nimravid Extinction, Miguel Andres Castellanos

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The late Eocene and Oligocene is traditionally seen as a time of great climactic shift, with open habitats beginning to appear and forests receding. This time period saw both the diversification and subsequent extinction of North American nimravids. The causes of the extinction of this early sabertooth group in the Arikareean remain unclear. One possibility for their decline is that nimravids were competitively disadvantaged in open habitats relative to contemporary, possibly more cursorial caniform predators. Here I analyze and compare the hunting styles of Eocene and Oligocene predators in correlation with their ecological implications via discriminant function analysis of the …

Tracing Past Climate Signals Through Multi-Proxy Analysis: Insights From Sedimentary Plant Wax Hydrogen Isotope Data And Long-Term Hydroclimate Records In Estonia, Mariliis Eensalu Jan 2024

Tracing Past Climate Signals Through Multi-Proxy Analysis: Insights From Sedimentary Plant Wax Hydrogen Isotope Data And Long-Term Hydroclimate Records In Estonia, Mariliis Eensalu

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

In light of the rising global temperatures, there is an increasing need to understand the potential shifts in hydroclimate. Past climate reconstructions offer a glimpse into the possible temperature-moisture dynamics by providing quantitative constraints for hydroclimate variability under different temperature conditions, which can ultimately aid in decreasing the uncertainty in future climate projections. The research presented in this dissertation focuses on utilizing various proxies to reconstruct past hydroclimate conditions, particularly in the Baltic region, with a specific emphasis on Estonia. The second and third chapter aim to improve the understanding of sedimentary plant wax hydrogen isotope (δ2H) data by first …

Temporal Microplastic Concentration Fluctuations Within An Agricultural Creek And Groundwater In Relation To Farming Practices, Jennifer Abel Jan 2024

Temporal Microplastic Concentration Fluctuations Within An Agricultural Creek And Groundwater In Relation To Farming Practices, Jennifer Abel

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Microplastics (MPs) in agriculture have been well-documented. Agrochemicals, organic fertilizers, and farming equipment all contribute plastic to agricultural soils, groundwater, and surface water and are utilized in different capacities throughout the year. It is unknown how the specific utilization of these products affects the concentration of MPs being input into the environment. Previous research has been primarily related to detection and transport of MPs in soils, groundwater, and surface water. I am unaware of any studies that have taken into consideration farming practices and seasons, and how they may affect any fluctuations in MP concentrations. Water samples (20 L) were …

Dust-Driven Mechanism For Marine Particle Aggregation: Interactions Between Clay Minerals, Heterotrophic Bacteria And Organic Matter Influences Aggregation In Marine Systems, Vignesh Gokuladas Menon

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Atmospheric dust deposition plays a crucial role in marine biogeochemical cycles, yet mechanisms underlying its impact on particle dynamics remain unclear. This study investigates the synergistic interactions between marine heterotrophic bacteria and clay minerals in seawater, focusing on their effect on Transparent Exopolymer Particles (TEP) production and organoclay aggregation. Field experiments in the Gulf of Maine and laboratory roller tank studies were conducted using natural microbial communities and model heterotrophic bacterial strains (Alteromonas sp. EZ55, Marinobacter adhaerens HP15, and Sulfitobacter sp. NAS-14.1). Results demonstrate that clay exposure significantly enhances TEP production by bloom-associated heterotrophic bacteria, with increases up to …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 29. Extraterrestrial Entertainment: Are We Being Monitored By Alien Beings?, Charles H. Smith Jan 2024

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 29. Extraterrestrial Entertainment: Are We Being Monitored By Alien Beings?, Charles H. Smith

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

Alfred Russel Wallace (1823−1913) was an early advocate for the rational assessment of likelihood of extraterrestrial life. Current efforts to evaluate the situation have ranged from the heavily self-indulgent to the more objective, and it is still often difficult to decide just how much of the information we are receiving on the subject is dependable. An attempt is made here to cut through the haze and reduce the matter to elementals.

From Creek To Ditch And Back Again: The History And Future Of Pattee Creek, Missoula, Montana, Carver Edward Butterfield Jan 2024

From Creek To Ditch And Back Again: The History And Future Of Pattee Creek, Missoula, Montana, Carver Edward Butterfield

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Pattee Creek was once a free-flowing stream that meandered across the Missoula Valley, but has been channelized, piped, and degraded by logging, mining, agriculture, and urbanization. This thesis used a mixed-method approach to examine the impact of human activities on the Pattee Creek watershed. Beginning with a historical overview, the story of how the creek has been utilized and why it was buried was told. An analysis of historical photos from 1937 to 2019 revealed drastic changes in the land cover of the watershed and the channel of lower Pattee Creek. Developed land increased dramatically, while open land decreased and …

Diagenesis And Quartz Grain Provenance Of The Turner Sandstone, Carson Lee Broaddus Jan 2024

Diagenesis And Quartz Grain Provenance Of The Turner Sandstone, Carson Lee Broaddus

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Provenance analysis of sedimentary rocks is an essential tool for basin analysis and paleogeographic reconstructions. Numerous tools and analytical methods have been developed over the years to investigate the source of detrital constituents in sedimentary rocks. The Late Cretaceous (Turonian) Turner Sandstone in the eastern Powder River Basin (PRB), WY, and the time equivalent Frontier Formation in the western PRB are commonly described as the remnants of a marginal marine depositional system. However, contradictory evidence exists about the source of those deposits. Here, I present results from a comprehensive scanning electron microscope panchromatic cathodoluminescence (SEM-PCL) analysis of >1200 individual sand-sized …

A Soil-Plant-Atmosphere Continuum Model To Simulate Seedling Response To Water Stress, Michael Kurt Kendree Jr. Jan 2024

A Soil-Plant-Atmosphere Continuum Model To Simulate Seedling Response To Water Stress, Michael Kurt Kendree Jr.

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Most current ecohydrologic models simplify the hydraulics that are at play in plant-water relationships by assuming that the water content within the plant is static. In reality, plants have a relative water content that varies with time in response to environmental stresses. To some extent, variations in plant relative water content are regulated by changes in the osmotic potential of water within plant cells, which contributes to the resilience of plants during periods of water shortage. We present a model that simulates plant water transport and storage within the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. The model incorporates the role of osmotic regulation in …

Identifying And Predicting Patterns Of Snowpack Ripening With Machine Learning Methods, Clement Cherblanc Jan 2024

Identifying And Predicting Patterns Of Snowpack Ripening With Machine Learning Methods, Clement Cherblanc

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The timing of water release from the snowpack plays key roles in ecosystem services, groundwater recharge, and water resource management. However, two internal barriers in a standing snowpack must be overcome before runoff can outflow from the base: 1) the cold content must be exhausted, and 2) the interconnected network of snow grains must be filled with liquid water to residual saturation. Expressing the liquid water as latent heat allows the two barriers to be grouped as an energy (J/m²) to define a snowpack’s Runoff Energy Hurdle (REH). The growth and loss of REH is driven by evolution of pore …

Modeling Earthquake Catalog (1985-2022) In Northern Egypt Using Space-Time Epidemic-Type Aftershock Sequences (Etas), Mariam Ramadan, Amir Ismail, Amin E. Khalil, Hesham Abdelhafiez, Nouran S. Salama Jan 2024

Modeling Earthquake Catalog (1985-2022) In Northern Egypt Using Space-Time Epidemic-Type Aftershock Sequences (Etas), Mariam Ramadan, Amir Ismail, Amin E. Khalil, Hesham Abdelhafiez, Nouran S. Salama

Trends in advanced sciences and technology

Earthquakes have the largest damaging effects among natural disasters on a global scale. Efforts for reducing their effects have taken place for a long time. The prediction of earthquakes was the main target, however the studies conducted were not successful. As a replacement, seismic hazard assessments were adopted to predict the levels of ground motion for the possible future large earthquakes. This approach is probabilistic in nature that rely on the quality of earthquake catalog. The probabilistic model adopted is built on the assumption that the events in the earthquake catalog are random Poisson distribution, assuming that events are independent …

The Impacts Of Impurities And Stress State On Polycrystalline Ice Deformation And Investigations Into The Densification Of Polar Firn, Ayobami Oladapo Ogunmolasuyi Jan 2024

The Impacts Of Impurities And Stress State On Polycrystalline Ice Deformation And Investigations Into The Densification Of Polar Firn, Ayobami Oladapo Ogunmolasuyi

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Glacier ice cores are unparalleled natural archives of past climate, containing ancient air and impurities. Understanding glacier and ice sheet behavior and their impact on impurity records is crucial for interpreting ice core records. H2SO4 is particularly significant, as it provides the strongest evidence for the diffusion of chemical signals and decreases the strength of single crystals and polycrystals of ice. However, its effects on recrystallization, grain growth, and fabric development mechanisms, as well as the effects of grain boundaries on its post-depositional diffusion remain unclear.

This thesis investigates the effects of the microstructural location of H …
