Lake Tanganyika, in central Africa, contains a diverse and endemic fauna under threat from global climate change, overfishing, and nearshore sediment pollution. Previous studies of sediment pollution focused justifiably on impacts along rocky shorelines where diversity is high, but Lake Tanganyika also contains widespread shelly accumulations (shell beds) unprecedented in the modern East African lakes, but where impacts are less con- strained. Here we integrate multiple datasets from three sites along the Tanzanian shoreline to explore how variation in sedimentation rates and sediment quality impacts shell-bed substrate and diversity and abundance of ostracodes and sponges across sites that exhibit varying …

Scientific evidence suggests that nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) effectively curb the spread of COVID-19 before a pharmaceutical solution. Implementing these interventions also significantly affects regular socioeconomic activities and practices of social, racial, and political justice. Local governments often face conflicting goals during policymaking. Striking a balance among competing goals during a global pandemic is a fine science of governance. How well state governments consume the scientific evidence and maintain such a balance remains less understood. This study employs a set of Bayesian hierarchical models to evaluate how state governments in the United States use scientific evidence to balance the fighting against …

OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a voluntary platform designed to provide free and up-to-date geographic data. Since OSM is based on multisource geographic data provided by the public, the quality of the data has become a concern of researchers. In this study, a unified measure for evaluating OSM data quality was constructed, and the entropy weight method (EWM) and Technique for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) model were used to evaluate the quality of multiscale OSM data in China from 2014 to 2020. In addition to evaluating the data quality, the use of OSM data quality index factors in …

The greenhouse to icehouse transition at the Eocene-Oligocene boundary (34 Ma) marked the appearance of continental-scale glaciation in Antarctica. The material recovered from Ocean Drilling Program Site 696 is the only record spanning this major climatic shift in the Weddell Sea region. Using scanning electron microscopy, quartz microtextures in 13 samples across the Eocene-Oligocene transition were analyzed to understand the degree of glacial modification and the transportation history of the >150 µm material. The quartz grains were visually grouped, characterized, and interpreted by grain outline, relief, and surface microtextures. Glacial textures are present throughout the entire interval (34.4–33.2 Ma), with …

In regional development studies, GDP serves as an important indicator for evaluating the developing levels of a region. However, due to statistical methods and possible human-induced interfering factors, GDP is also a commonly criticized indicator for less accurately assessing regional economic development in a dynamic environment, especially during a globalized era. Moreover, common data collection approaches are often challenging to obtain in real-time, and the assessments are prone to inaccuracies. This is especially true in economically underdeveloped regions where data are often less frequently or accurately collected. In recent years, Nighttime Light (NTL) data have emerged as a crucial supplementary …

Battles, Bustles, And Ballots: The Struggle For Michigan Women's Enfranchisement, Anna Bennett
Battles, Bustles, And Ballots: The Struggle For Michigan Women's Enfranchisement, Anna Bennett
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The struggle for women’s rights was long fought throughout American history and Michigan played a vital role in the movement’s success. This thesis explores three monumental eras that shaped the struggle for women’s suffrage in Michigan, detailing the evolution from the 1860s Civil War Era through the late 19th and early 20th century Progressive Era. The first era highlights how the Civil War provided women opportunities to challenge prevailing gender conventions and express political opinions. The second era examines the 1874 election, when suffrage was on the ballot but ultimately defeated, largely due to the Beecher-Tilton Scandal that tarnished the …

Investigating Converted Phases In The Midland Basin, Texas, Using Synthetic Seismograms, Julia Rosenblit
Earth Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Intraplate seismicity in previously aseismic areas within the Permian Basin, Texas, has steadily increased since 2009 (Frohlich et al., 2020). The Midland Basin, the eastern lobe of the Permian, has experienced multiple moderate magnitude earthquakes (M4-6), including the recent 2022 M5.2 Range Hill earthquake. While it is generally accepted that oil and gas development is linked to the seismic activity, and saltwater disposal (SWD) is a significant triggering mechanism in the Midland Basin, understanding the mechanism(s) of shallow (

Contract Reports--KGS
The Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS), a state-supported independent research center within the University of Kentucky, is committed to providing accurate and unbiased geologic information on natural resources, environmental issues, and natural hazards in Kentucky. While Kentucky boasts complete coverage by 1:24,000-scale geologic bedrock maps, surficial materials have been largely overlooked, except in regions with thick deposits obscuring the bedrock. Given the increasing trends in economic development and urbanization, detailed surficial geologic mapping has become crucial for supporting geotechnical planning, environmental management, and hazard assessment. In response, KGS has prioritized new, detailed surficial geologic mapping since 2004, specifically targeting areas anticipated …

Concentrations of large mollusc shells in coastal deposits provide important information about the local malacofauna and potential transport agents, including extreme events [1-4]. Such accumulations are common in the rock record [5,6], with Quaternary examples serving as good time-averaged examples by combining aspects of both the modern biocoenoses and the fossil record. Death assemblages of local organisms (thanatocoenosis) and their preserved record (taphocoenosis) in carbonate settings, where granulometric spectrum may be very limited (e.g., ooilitic sand), can serve as important paleo-environmental indicators, especially when considered in combination with primary sedimentary structures (in outcrops or geophysical images) and in situ biogenic …

The Geodetic Strain Rates From Gnss In The North American-Carribean-Cocos Triple Junction In Guatemala And Implications For Seismic Hazard, Tanaya Kashyap
Masters Theses
"Geodetic velocity data are pivotal for deciphering seismic risks, providing initial constraints for crustal surface strain rates. Gaining an understanding of the 2D surface strain tensor across an entire area necessitates knowledge of the surface velocity field, yet geodetic data such as measurements from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) are dispersed across the Earth’s surface. In the current scope of study, we have employed various methodologies to estimate strain rates in Guatemala, utilizing GNSS velocity data and leveraging the open-source Python tool Strain_2D. Strain_2D facilitates the computation of strain rates through diverse methods applied to the same dataset and …

This article presents development of a UAV based frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar system for remotely sensing the water contained within snowpacks. To make the radar system compatible with the payload requirements of small UAV platforms, the radar electronics are implemented with CMOS technology, and the antenna is implemented as an extremely compact and lightweight metasurface (MTS) antenna. This article will discuss how the high absorption losses of snowpacks lead to dynamic range requirements much stricter than FMCW radars used for automotive and other sensing applications, and how these requirements are met through antenna isolation, leakage calibration and exploitation …

Post-Glacial Landscape Evolution Of The Lower St. Croix River Valley: The Enigma Of Glacial Lake Grantsburg, The Osceola Bench, And The St. Croix Dells, Hunter Delikowski
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The St. Croix River valley (SCRV) is the product of dyssynchronous glacial advance and retreat of several glacial lobes during regional deglaciation of the Late Pleistocene-Early Holocene transition. Additionally, the SCRV has been dramatically shaped by multiple proglacial lake drainage episodes. Therefore, the SCRV is an important case study to understanding the impacts of proglacial lake spillover processes. However, the magnitude, frequency, timing, duration, and geomorphic impacts of these floods remain enigmatic. We focus on a specific reach of the SCRV, which we name the Lower SCRV for the purpose of this study. The lower SCRV contains several anomalous landforms …

Earth Mri Western Kentucky Fluorspar District 3d Geological Modeling, Devan M. Robinson, Anna Pearson, John B. Hickman, Georgina Lukoczki, William Morton Andrews Jr.
Research Data--KGS
The Illinois–Kentucky Fluorspar District (IKFD) three-dimensional (3D) geological data model plays a critical role in the EarthMRI IKFD project, which aims to utilize the vast and detailed geologic maps and datasets that the Kentucky and Illinois state geological surveys possess to develop a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based 3D geological framework model for the district. The model serves as a framework in which to view the subsurface geological and geochemical data, and to better comprehend the structural and other geologic processes acting on the region as they relate to the locations of critical minerals. The development of the model will also …
