The Pipy Concretions Of The Arikaree, C. Bertrand Schultz

The pipy concretions of the Arikaree (lower Miocene) of Nebraska and adjacent states were first described by Nelson Horatio Darton (1899, p. 743) as "characteristic layers of hard, fine-grained, dark-gray concretions, often consisting of aggregations of long, irregular, cylindrical masses" (see Figures 30, 32, 34, and 35). The individual pipes vary in diameter from a few inches to several feet, and in length from a few inches to a hundred yards or more. Tests demonstrate that pipy concretions are composed of sand cemented by calcium carbonate. When dipped in acid the cement is dissolved and the concretion is reduced to …

"Conodonts were discovered in the limestones of the Marathon region in the Big Bend country, Brewster County, Texas, as a result of field work during the summer of 1939. This was not the first known occurrence of these fossils from this region, however, as King earlier mentioned the occurrence of conodonts in siliceous shales of Devonian age. The discovery of conodonts in the Ordovician and Pennsylvanian limestones of the area had its inception in the attempt to determine whether the Dimple limestone (lower Pennsylvanian) or Maravillas limestone (upper Ordovician) was involved in a fault that was being mapped. The earliest record of the Museum states that in June of 1874 Professor Samuel Aughey was appointed Director of Cabinets. He was succeeded by Professor Lewis E. Hicks in June, 1885. Little work was carried on in paleontology, however, until Dr. Erwin H. Barbour took charge in 1891 and organized the first expeditions. In 1893, Mr. Charles H. Morrill began his generous support of the field work, and since that time important contributions by him and others have enabled this work to continue. The studies of the Squaw formation of the "Chugwater" series were conducted in the vicinity of Lander, Fremont County, Wyoming. Most of the observations were made at Derby Dome which is located in parts of T31N and T32N, R98W fifteen miles southeast of Lander. Others were made at Dallas Dome, nine miles southeast of Lander, and at Squaw Canyon, the type section, about four miles west of Lander. The region is one of moderately high, but not mountainous relief. The elevation at Lander is about 5350 feet, Derby Dome being somewhat less and Squaw Canyon somewhat more. Since it is …

However, the fire assaying of gold and silver dates further back than this. All of the metals have definite melting points. When a metal is heated above the melting point, it exists as a liquid. Now if the melt is allowed to cool, it will solidify when a temperature corresponding to the melting point is reached.

However, if one metal is added to another metal, both of which are mutually soluble in the liquid state, a certain effect can be noted. The melt will not solid­ify when the melting point of the pure metal is reached, but will freeze at a lower temperature.

Probably most of the area included in this report has been ex­amined to some extent by oil geologists, and most, if not all, of the important domes have been discovered and surveyed thoroughly. In parts of the area, the bedrock is covered by glacial drift or alluvium materi­al, but it is reasonable to believe that no new domal structure will be found. This means that surface examination alone will be insufficient in locating new oil fields, so future prospecting will be dependent, to a great extent, on studies of sub-surface stratigraphy.
