Laboratory cage tests and controlled experiments in houses have clearly demonstrated that residual-spray deposits of DDT are lethal to mosquitoes for considerable periods. Although these tests valuable information on the durability of DDT residual deposits, they did not give information on the mortality of malaria mosquitoes naturally entering treated dwellings in search of a blood meal. In order to secure a lethal dose of DDT from residual deposits, mosquitoes must actually touch the material and be exposed to it for a considerable period. The rock formations of the earth are great natural reservoirs in which a part of the water derived from rain and snow is stored. Water levels and artesian pressure in wells register the stages of these natural reservoirs. The changes in water levels or artesian pressure are indicative of the depletion or replenishment of the natural reservoirs. Systematic and periodic measurements of water levels and artesian pressure in wells have been made in Nevada, by State and Federal agencies from time to time. In the course of studies on the cestode parasites of microtine rodents by one of the authors (Hansen), specimens of mice were sent to the United State National Museum where they were identified by Dr. David H. Johnson. Two of these microtines proved to be Synaptomys cooperi gossii (Coues). These specimens of Synaptomys (U.S.N.M. Nos. 282343 and 282344), collected at Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, on September 16, 1946 (male) and November 20, 1946 (female), respectively, are the first ones to be identified from Nebraska.

Osteological rather than geological problems have been the main concern of most writers who have so far published. The Dunmore lode is located near Ouray, Colorado in the northwest part of the San Juan Mountains. In structure as well as mineral assemblage it shows a connection between the chimneys and veins of the region. The lode averages about 100 feet wide for 1,200 feet along the Dunmore claim. The fissure zone is over two miles long and displacement along it has offset a folded pre-Cambrian complex 4,500 feet prior to the deposition of 2,400 feet of volcanic tuff. Fissures in the pre-Cambrian rocks controlled in part the intrusion of dikes and the formation of veins. Late Tertiary faulting …

Almost four decades have elapsed since Platen (1908), the German paleobotanist, published his report upon the fossil woods of the western United States. Since then no over-all treatment of these materials has been attempted. although Platen overlooked the Pacific Northwest with its abundance of Tertiary petrified woods. The purpose of this paper is to bring knowledge of the western coniferous woods of the Tertiary up to date. Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The purpose of this bulletin is to report an investigation of the soils mapped as types of the Burchard and Steinauer series. Burchard soils are described as nearly mature Prairie soils, and Steinauer soils as Lithosols, by the Division of Soil Survey. The C horizons of soils of both series consist of calcareous glacial drift. A part of the conclusions drawn from the investigation of these soils is based upon observations made in the field in southeastern Nebraska, the remainder upon laboratory data for samples taken by horizons from nine profiles.

The nyssa gums are one of the modern genera of trees most certainly present among the petrified woods and forests of the Pacific Northwest. Almost every collection from the mid-Tertiary of this region contains a few specimens of typical tupelo or sour gum. These are fine-grained woods which to the unaided eye may be mistaken for conifers.
