On The Solar Magnetic Field In Inter-Planetary Space, Jacqueline H. Hill Jun 1964

On The Solar Magnetic Field In Inter-Planetary Space, Jacqueline H. Hill

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to determine, experimentally and theoretically, an axially symmetric current distribution which would simulate the currents believed to flow in interplanetary space around the sun. The general magnetic field of the sun is assumed to originate as a dipole field which induces currents in the plasma of the solar atmosphere. The dipole field is in turn modified by the induced currents. This phenomenon is often described in terms or a diamagnetism of the plasma. In the limiting case, this diamagnetism would almost completely prevent the inducing field from penetrating the plasma.

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Laron Mountains are & westward-tilted fault block and an important western bounding structure of the Rio Grande depression in the Albuquerque-Belen basin. The main massif is a complex of both igneous and metamorphic Precambrian rocks. It consists of a thick sequence of steeply east-dipping quartzite & and schists which are predominantly a product of low- to medium- grade regional Precambrian metamorphism. Granitic gneiss is ptygmatically folded with abundant schist remnant in a large area on the eastern flank of the mountains and represents an ultrametamorphic product of anatexis. All metamorphic rocks have been invaded by two later Precambrian granites. …

Temperature Dependence Of Soil-Moisture Potential, Jacob Willem Kijne May 1964

Temperature Dependence Of Soil-Moisture Potential, Jacob Willem Kijne

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Teachers have noticed that children draw only those objects which they know by name. Doubtless the adult has a similar tendency, exemplified by the researcher, to limit his observations or to relate them to that which can be expressed in the terminology of an existing or newly developed theory. In this thesis the data obtained from studies of the temperature and pressure dependence of the relative vapor pressure over moist soil samples are analyzed by a thermodynamic approach. Not all of the results can be explained completely by means of this tool. Natural systems, such as a moist soil, are …

Influence Of Fertilizer Treatment On The Response Of Sugar Beet Yield To Moisture, Samad Farzanfar May 1964

Influence Of Fertilizer Treatment On The Response Of Sugar Beet Yield To Moisture, Samad Farzanfar

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many factors that influence the growth and quality of sugar beets behave in one way under one set of conditions and in quite another under other conditions. Consequently, these factors should be considered together under a dynamic situation to find their interrelations and their influence on sugar beet yield.

This study is a statistical analysis of the interaction of fertilizer and soil moisture potential with the yield of sugar beets grown in a crop rotation under different regimes of irrigation conducted over a period of seven years.

The data are available for the years 1949 through 1956, from an intensive …

Petrography Of A Cyclical Sequence, Upper Madera Limestone, Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, Fred Yale Mar 1964

Petrography Of A Cyclical Sequence, Upper Madera Limestone, Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, Fred Yale

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Chemical determinations of calcium and magnesium carbonates, iron, Kjeldahl nitrogen, and sulfate with supplementary petrographic thin-section and insoluble-residue studies and differential thermal analyses were used to study a Virgilian sedimentary cycle in the upper Madera Limestone of New Mexico. In 120 meters of section 4 cycles were recognized; one of these was studied in detail. Cyclic subsidence and subsequent basin filling produced a sequence of gross environmental changes accomplished by organisms in a definite ecological succession. Biologic communities were progressively modified by the changing marine sedimentary cycle. The cycles of the upper Madera Limestone begin with a lower fusulinid claystone, …

Slope Deposits Of The Pennsylvanian Haymond Formation, Marathon Region, Texas, Walter E. Dean Jr.

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Haymond Formation of the Marathon basin, Texas consists mainly of a sequence of more than 12,000 siltstone-shale couplets which, combined with the similar couplets of the older Tesnus Formation, form a sequence of "flysch" sediments more than 10,000 feet thick deposited on the eastern slope of the subsiding Llanoria geosyncline. The Haymond Formation contains no diagnostic fossils; its age is known only as Lower Pennsylvanian, probably Atokan.

A Comparison Between The Direction Of Tornado Movement And The Associated 500 Mb. Level Wind Direction, Allen B. Johnson Jan 1964

A Comparison Between The Direction Of Tornado Movement And The Associated 500 Mb. Level Wind Direction, Allen B. Johnson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

An investigation to ( 1) determine the 500-milli-bar level weather patterns associated with tornadoes moving from northwest toward southeast and from southwest toward northeast and, (2) show the significance of the contrasts between the 500-mb. level weather patterns of the two tornado types. A very high relationship between the direction of the 500-mb. level winds and the tornado direction was substantiated by a coefficient of correlation of +0.88. The typical 500-mb. level low center associated with the northwest to southeast type tornado was located over Hudson Bay about 1300 miles north-northeast of the tornado area. The low center associated with …

Variation In Perthitic Microcline From A Zoned Pegmatite, Terry E. Tullis Jan 1964

Variation In Perthitic Microcline From A Zoned Pegmatite, Terry E. Tullis

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Quantitative microscopic and chemical anaylses of 12 specimens of microcline, most of them perthitic, from the zoned Hugo pegmatite in the Black Hills near Keystone, South Dakota, have yielded data that can be used to estimate the temperatures of crystallization at successive stages in the formation of the pegmatite. The determined temperatures of crystallization range from 565°C in zone 3a, near the margin of the pegmatite, to 280°C in zone 7, the core.
