A Petrochemical Study Of Compositionally Zoned Ash-Flow Tuffs, David L. Giles
A Petrochemical Study Of Compositionally Zoned Ash-Flow Tuffs, David L. Giles
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Vertical compositional zoning occurs within the basal simple cooling units of two welded ash-flow tuff sheets, the Kneeling Nun and Caballo Blanco formations, in the Cobre Mountains of southwestern New Mexico. The sheets are on the southern edge of the Datil-Mogollon volcanic province. The Kneeling Nun (33.4 m.y.) varies abruptly but systematically upward from a modal quartz latite to latite, and the Caballo Blanco (29.8 m.y.) from a modal rhyolite to capping quartz latite. Both are crystal-rich, and in each the amount of ferromagnesian and plagioclase phenocrysts and phenocryst percent increases upward, while the quartz and alkali feldspar/plagioclase ratio decreases. …

Geology Of The Cerro Pelon-Arroyo De La Jara Area, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, Alvis Lee Lisenbee
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The Cerro Pelon-Arroyo de la Jara area is a north-northwesterly plunging syncline at the southern end of the Española basin. Exposed rock units consist of more than 5,000 feet of Mesozoic and Cenozoic shale and sandstone intruded by Oligocene diorite sills and andesite and latite dikes related to the Ortiz intrusive center to the west.
The syncline is affected by several fault systems with both normal and strike-slip movement represented. Northerly trending faults of the east limb combine with a monoclinal flexure to produce an over-all lowering of the section to the west. These faults appear to be related to …
A Stratigraphic Study Of The Navajo Sandstone, Navajo Mountain, Utah And Arizona, William O. Hatchell
A Stratigraphic Study Of The Navajo Sandstone, Navajo Mountain, Utah And Arizona, William O. Hatchell
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The Navajo Sandstone of the Triassic(?) and Jurassic age is approximately 1, 000 feet thick at Navajo Mountain, Utah, and is composed of sets of cliff-forming, highly cross-stratified sandstone and horizontally stratified limestone, siltstone, and sandstone. it is intertongued on a large scale with the underlying, fluvial Kayenta Formation of Triassic(?) age, and is comfortably overlain by the marine Carmel Formation of the Jurassic age.
In the highly cross-stratified Navajo, tabular-planner and wedge planner sets are more common than simple wedge sets, and persistent horizontal bedding and truncation planes distinguish individual sets. Ripple marks, a distinctive type of "graded bedding", …

A Pre- And Post-Improvement Study On Six Southeast Kansas Strip-Mine Lakes, William Thomas Waller
A Pre- And Post-Improvement Study On Six Southeast Kansas Strip-Mine Lakes, William Thomas Waller
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
During the last sixty years extensive experimental research has been conducted in an attempt to establish methods of controlling the acid conditions resulting from coal mine operations.
It was the purpose of this research to determine the feasibility of reclaiming acid strip-mine lakes for use as potential fisheries management areas. To accomplish the objectives outlined above a two-phase program was initiated. The first phase involved the physical alteration of the drainage areas of the experimental lakes included in this study in an attempt to divert all visible signs of acid drainage to areas other than those incorporated into the drainage …

Movement Of Atrazine In Soil Under Furrow Irrigation, Jyothi Veerabhadrappa
Movement Of Atrazine In Soil Under Furrow Irrigation, Jyothi Veerabhadrappa
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Movement of atrazine in response to furrow irrigations was studied using the samples of Timpanogos silt loam soil. Distribution in soil profile of surface applied herbicide was determined by drawing samples of water extracts through porous cylinders. Atrazine quantity was determined by spectrophotometer.
It was observed that the herbicide found in the water extracts was an indication of the quantity present in the soil. The herbicide moved readily with the applied water. Irreversible thermodynamic model could not be applied because of the initial and final boundary conditions. The pattern of movement was in conformity with the chromatographic theory.

The Influence Of Thermo-Gradients Upon Water Movement And Retention In Unsaturated Soils, Jose V. Salazar
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Temperature differences of about 5, 10, and 15 V, were applied to uniformly packed and insulated horizontal column of Millville silt loam soil using mean temperatures near 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 23.5 C. The temperature distribution along the soil column was determined using copper constantan thermocouples. Soil samples were taken to determine volumetric moisture content, and soil water potential, using the vapor pressure psychometer technique. The thermodynamic flow equation of Taylor and Cary, (1964) was used to calculate the hydro-thermal transfer coefficient (ß) as given by:
-ß = d(μw)T / dlnT

The Influence Of Irrigating With Saline Water On The Energy Status Of Water In Soil And Plant, Rolando H. Braun
The Influence Of Irrigating With Saline Water On The Energy Status Of Water In Soil And Plant, Rolando H. Braun
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
- Changes in the energy status of water that occurred in Milville silt loam and in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants growing on it , during two consecutive 6-day periods while being irrigated with saline solutions, were studied.
- Total soil water potential (Ψ soil) (measured with thermocouple psychrometers), matric-potential (Ψm) (measured with tensiometers) were considered. In leaf samples, the total water potential (leaf) and the osmotic potential (Ψπ)--after freezing-- were determined with thermocouple psychrometers; by difference, the pressure potential (Ψp) was obtained.
- There is no evidence of close relationship between changes taking place in …

Geology Of The Northern Part Of The Malad Range, Idaho, Drew C. Axtell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Rocks of Paleozoic, Tertiary, and Quaternary age are represented in the northern part of the Malad Range. The Paleozoic rocks are represented by thirteen formations that are characterized lithologically by quartzites, shales, and carbonates. The oldest formation in the mapped area of Paleozoic age is the Brigham Formation, and the youngest formation is the Jefferson Formation of late Devonian age.
The rocks of Tertiary age are conglomerates, shales, and limestones and are represented by the Wasatch Formation, the Salt Lake Formation, and boulders. Quaternary rocks include sediments of the Lake Bonneville Group and alluvium.
The faults in the mapped area …

Geology Of The West-Central Part Of The Malad Range, Idaho, Phillip H. Wach
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The west-central part of the Malad Range is located in south-eastern Idaho. This area was the site of thick marine deposition in the early Paleozoic period. In the Tertiary and Quaternary periods continental deposition occurred, covering the Paleozoic rocks. Quartzite and shale units of the Brigham Quartzite are found near the base of the Cambrian section. Carbonate with shale interbeds is found in the middle and late Cambrian units. Limestone and silty limestone are found in the early and middle Ordovician time overlain by the middle Ordovician Swan Peak Quartzite. The Laketown Dolomite includes units of late Ordovician and Silurian …
Experiments On The Inactivation Of Zinc By The Mineral Fractions Of The Soil, John J. Hassett
Experiments On The Inactivation Of Zinc By The Mineral Fractions Of The Soil, John J. Hassett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Zinc deficiency, in many cases, is closely related to organic matter decomposition. DeRemer and Smith (1964) studied the effects of decomposing sugar beet tops on the reactions of Zn65 in a Portneuf soil. They found that with time the Zn65 associated with lime minerals, exchangeable, and water soluble fractions of the soil decreased, while that found with the organic and mineral fractions increased. This increase in the mineral fraction is of particular interest, since the majority of the Zn65 was found to be with this fraction after a period of time. They also showed that the increase …
The Interaction Between Water Movement, Solute Uptake, And Respirational Energy In Plant Roots, Mohamed Sadek Tawakol
The Interaction Between Water Movement, Solute Uptake, And Respirational Energy In Plant Roots, Mohamed Sadek Tawakol
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Sunflower plants (Helianthus annus, var. Russian mammoth) were grown in Hogland nutrient solution. The roots (after being subjected to treatments with either respiratory inhibitors or respiratory stimulators) were used to measure the flux of water Jw, flux of solute Js , and the rate of respiration Jo.
The thermodynamic theory of irreversible processes was used to examine the interaction between fluxes, and the changes in conductivity under different treatments. The rate equations for a root membrane of unit thickness were developed as:
Jw = LwwVw∆p + LwsRT ln …

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Teeth of mastodons and mammoths have been recovered by fishermen from at least 40 sites on the continental shelf as deep as 120 meters. Also present are submerged shorelines, peat deposits, lagoonal shells, and relict sands. Evidently elephants and other large mammals ranged this region during the glacial stage of low sea level of the last 25,000 years.
