The results of a survey, concerning environmental education taken of the educators of the Nelson County School System, indicated a need for environmental education workshops and classes.

The status of environmental education in the nation and in Kentucky were studied and compared. A research was done of the status of environmental education in Nelson County, and implications were drawn for implementing environmental education in the Nelson County School System.

A tentative program for implementing environmental education in the Nelson Country schools was given, and a bibliography of resources and materials to be used in said program was included.

A three-dimensional finite element computer program was developed for analyzing unsteady flow toward artesian wells. The program is designed especially for determining the drawdown around an artesian well penetrating fully or partially a nonhomogeneous and anisotropic aquifer of irregular shape and cross section. It can also be used as a general program for aquifer simulation and evaluation. A major advantage of the program lies in the minimum amount of input data required. By assuming the top and bottom boundaries of the aquifer as two arbitrary planes, the aquifer will be divided into six- or eight-node elements, and their nodal coordinates …

Spatially Varied Subcritical And Supercritical Flow In Gullies, T. Y. Kao

The objective of this study was to investigate the phenomena of subcritical and supercritical spatially varied flow in rectangular expansions such as that in an erosion gully. Based on momentum and continuity principles, equations were developed to predict such flow phenomena. Computations of the water surface profiles for subcritical spatially varied flow were carried out by applying direct step numerical calculations. Because of the presence of standing waves, the method of characteristics was employed in the analytical analysis of the supercritical flow phenomena. Two Texas barrier islands, Boca Chica and Brazos, have unique coastal vegetational communities that may be Influenced by several environmental factors. These environmental factors include temperature, precipitation, wind speed, sunshine exposure, day length, and dune height. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the total number of coastal plant species per station, season, and year and to consider environmental factors that may significantly affect the number and pattern of coastal species. Coverage comparison between aerial and land sampling and aerial vegetational zonation was also considered.

Results indicated the presence of 21 angiosperm families and a total of 54 species. …

Information about the benthic macroinvertebrate populations along the eastern shore of Goshen Bay, Utah Lake, Utah, can be used, in part, to determine future management of the lake. In the project herein reported, cement artificial substrate samplers were used to sample two types of substrate: rubble and compacted calcareous tufa. Monthly samples were obtained from each type of substrate from March 1972 to May 1973. An amphipod, Hyalela azteca and a chironomid, Dicrotendipes fumidus were the dominant organisms in numbers and tiomass. Amphipod numbers were dependent upon the amount of algal standing crop. Because growth rate is largely dependent upon environmental conditions, such a record serves also as an indication of variations in the environment during the lifetime of the shell. The composition of major mineral phases in four rocks from the equatorial Mid-Atlantic Ridge, as determined by electron microprobe analysis and supplemented by additional mineralogic and petrographic study, have provided data for comparison with continental mafic assemblages. The compositional range of coexisting minerals in the samples: a nepheline-normative gabbro (teschenite), an olivine tholeiite, and two uralitized norites, is similar to the ranges of comparable continental suites. The teschenite contains pyroxene (Wo_48-46 En_37-23Fs_15-31) with high amounts of CaO (20.3-22.2 wt %), Al₂O₃ (2.9-6.8 wt. %), and Ti02 (1.2-2.9 wt. %) characteristic of continental …

This bulletin describes nutrient and energy composition of beef cattle waste fractions as a function of the ration roughage level and type of feedlot. The White Oaks mining district is 12 km northeast of Carrizozo, in Lincoln County, New Mexico. Hydrothermal gold and tungsten mineralization occurs in north-trending veins and breccia zones in portions of the central district. Permian sandstones, limestones, and gypsum of the San Andres Formation are upwarped marginal to and by the Lone Mountain intrusive in the northwest portion of the map area. Triassic Santa Rosa and Chinle sandstones and shales are inclined to the south with Cretaceous Dakota, Mancos, and Mesaverde sediments. Approximately 640 m of sedimentary strata is exposed in the district.

Groundwater from thirty-three wells which are randomly distributed within 42 square miles of the residential, agricultural and industrial area of East Portland Terraces have been analyzed. The area is moderately wet with an annual precipitation of about 37 inches. Residual and transported sediments from different sources, dominantly volcanic, comprise the subsurface lithology. The sedimentary units that were deposited by means of rivers and lakes have filled an original structural and erosional valley in the area. This relatively unconsolidated valley filling is about 900 feet of predominantly lenticular, stratified and cross-bedded lenses of clay, silt, sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders.

The objective of this study was to develop a rainfall simulator, which imparts to the laboratory rainfall the more important characteristics of natural rainfall such as intensity, drop spectrum, kinetic energy, and momentum at impact, for using in soil erosion research with better results. Organic rich limestone nodules within the Severy Shale Formation collected directly above the Nodaway Coal Member near DuBois, Nebraska, have yielded a rich microflora and microfauna. The microflora includes Triletes megaspores, seeds, cuticle, and pieces of wood with well preserved structures. The microfaunal skeletal material is either partially or completely replaced by pyrite, marcasite, or, in rare cases, by sphalerite. The fresh-water mussel industry of the Tennessee River is nearing an end. Overharvesting, habitat alterations, and pollution are the major contributors to the depletion of the mussel resource, upon which the shell industry is based. A history of unconcern by shell harvesters and weak conservation enforcement by governmental agencies, has left the major waterways of the United States nearly void of commercial clams. The lower Tennessee River presently supplies the mussel industry with nearly all the important species of mollusks. Soil and litter samples were collected from the playa, playa fringe and bajada zones of the Jornada Validation Site. These samples were analyzed for their seed content, special attention being paid to spatial distribution. At the time of sampling, there was little litter on the soil surface, and the litter contained only a small proportion of the total seeds present.

The study was designed to test the genetic theory of soil development of two soils derived from different geological material, but developed under conditions of similar climate, topography, biological activity, and age. An attempt was made to relate the soils characteristics to their present classification. Parleys and Mendon series which developed from Bonneville and Salt Lake Formation, respectively, were selected for that purpose. Along the east side of Cache valley, two pedons representing each of the studied series were selected to have similar soil formers except for their parent material.

Soil moisture and nitrogen are often the primary controlling factors of crop production. Production functions are valuable in describing crop responses to such controlling factors. Such functions are also needed for determining the economic reliability of crop production.

Soil moisture and nitrogen fertilizer were maintained at various levels to determine the response of field corn to these controlling factors. A conventional split plot design, a continuous function experimental design, and a confined barrel plot design were used to obtain data for determining production functions.

The spectral distribution of the global radiation from 0.4 to 2.5 microns penetrating deciduous and coniferous canopies were measured during clear days between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. using a double-quartz monochromator.

In the visible region (0.4 to 0.7 micron) the average relative spectral transmissions under both canopies are about one percent beginning at 0.4 micron and decreasing to about half a percent at 0.67 micron. There is only a small peak in the green (0.55 micron) transmission under deciduous stands while there is none under coniferous canopies. The slightly higher transmission in the blue (0.4 micron) is attributed to …

The Nounan Formation in north-central Utah thickens northward from 696 feet near Causey Dam to 1147 feet at High Creek in the Bear River Range, and northwestward to 1149 feet at Dry Canyon in Wellsville Mountain. The basal contact of the Nounan Formation is sharp, but dolomite extends irregularly downward into limestones of the Bloomington Formation as much as 6 feet.

The western phosphate field produced about 15 percent, in 1970, of the nation's domestically consumed phosphate rock and contains an estimated 58 percent of the nation's indicated phosphate reserves. The central portion of the western phosphate field, which contains the Dry Valley area of southeastern Idaho, encompasses the greatest amount of mineable phosphate reserves in the smallest geographic area within the western field.

Exploration of properties in the area should follow an orderly sequence of literature search, area reconnaissance, detailed target appraisal, and detailed three-dimensional sampling to effectively evaluate each property. Wet chemical analysis and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) were performed on a suite of samples from three residual ferruginous bauxite profiles in the study area for abundances of Al₂O₃,

SiO₂, Fe₂O₃, Ti O₂, Na, Sc, Hf, Cr, Co, La, Sm, Yb, Lu, and Th. In addition a mineralogical study accompanied this research, using petrographic, differential thermal, and x-ray diffraction techniques. In each profile, the relative mobility of these elements were calculated by empirical methods for comparison with the parent rock and mineral properties in the saprolite.

A method for calculating littoral transport, direct determination of the sediment flux, has been proposed and evaluated. Three sampling stations, located between Virginia Beach and Sandbridge, Virginia, were occupied for a period of thirteen months (September, 1972 to September, 1973). Measurements include velocity of the littoral current, cross-sectional area of the surf zone, and in situ samples of suspended and bottom sediment load. Observations of sea and atmospheric conditions were obtained. Two ways of calculating littoral transport were derived from the same basic method, thus two sets of transport values were generated. The Schmidt Site (20 SA 192) is located in Saginaw County, south of the Cass River and just east of the Grand Trunk Railroad in the NE 1/4, sec. 19, T 11 N, R 4 E, of the Bridgeport Township (figs. 1, 2, 3).
