In 1975/76 two varieties of sunflower, Hysun 10 and Hysun 20, as well as Safflower (Gila) were grown in a large alternative crop demonstration. Results were sufficiently good to warrant more and closer examination. This led to the present variety trial using varieties suggested by Mr. M. Poole. The aim was to evaluate six sunflower varieties and one safflower. The work was carried out in the light of reduced profitability of peas, beans and some fruit crops. This results in a number of growers having irrigation water and equipment under-employed. Other farmers are after a crop which will give them …

Results from 1976 Trials on Wheat. Rates of nitrogen on wheat - soil test. In this, the second year of this programme, 49 sites were selected and soil sampled during February-March. Forty six of these trials consisted of four replications and the other three had three replications and all reps were soil sampled separately. 1. Drilled Trials in Wheatbelt Districts. Trial No. 76GE7, 76LG5, 76ME5, 76ME6, 76M011, 76M012, 76NA6, 76N01, 76TS10. A series of 9 trials to compare the crossbred subterranean clovers Nungarin, 239.2 and 584.1B. with Northam and Geraldton was sown in representative, dry wheatbelt localities in 1976. The trials were sown in randomised blocks with four replications on sites which carried little or no clover. Plot size was 4.22 metres by 40 metres. Superphosphate was applied at rates related to past applications and soil type, but was usually about 200 kg a hectare. Copper, zinc and molybdenum were applied where necessary. Seed …

The Pitkin Limestone overlies black shale of the Fayetteville Formation and is the youngest Mississippian unit in the Paleozoic succession of northwest Arkansas. Five major fades have been delineated within the formation by apetrographic examination of samples collected from 17 measured sections: (1) oolith facies, (2) bioclast facies, (3) nodular limestone-shale facies, (4) mudstone facies, and (5) lime mud mound facies. The distribution of these facies in the Pitkin Formation suggests that Fayetteville terrigenous sedimentation was succeeded by the deposition of widespread oolith shoals and skeletal blanket sand bodies across the northern Arkansas structural platform. During a geological and geophysical survey of the Oceanographer Fracture Zone (35°N, 35°W), seventeen dredge hauls containing a variety of rocks were obtained. Petrographic study shows that these rock samples can be classified into six main rock types: fresh basalt, weathered basalt, metabasalt, gabbro, metagabbro, and serpentinite. Most of the dredge hauls were positioned on the steep, southern wall of the fracture zone, and an inference from the dredging results suggests that basalt is the most abundant rock type which outcrops at the junction between the rift valley and the fracture zone; however, as we move away from the junction, …

Rocks in the Eastern Vermont Sequence are highly metamorphosed and are said to range in age from Precambrian to Siluro-Devonian. The sequence outcrops on Keyes Mountain, about 6km Northwest of Felchville, Vermont, and an area on this mountain about 2km square was mapped in great detail.
The dominant rock type found is quartzofeldspathic gneiss, but schistose gneiss, amphibolite, quartzite and schist also occur. Most of these rocks are layered but layering has been transposed in many places and much of it is probably secondary. Layering and schistosity both dip dominantly to the north at about 25º.

In 1974 and 1975 about 2800 samples (of which 265 contained foraminiferids) of the Cannonball Formation were collected from 60 water test wells and two oil wells in Adams, Bowman, Burleigh, Divide, Dunn, Grant, Mercer, Morton, Oliver, Sioux, and Ward Counties in western North Dakota. Fifty species of benthonic foraminiferids and four species of planktonic foraminiferids were identified including eight textulariines, two milio lines and 44 rotaliines. Taxa reported for the first time from the Can nonball include: Reophax sp. Geologic mapping in the Zacapa quadrangle and southern Rio Hondo quadrangle has shown that the Las Ovejas Complex, of probable pre-Early Pennsylvanian age and the oldest rock south of the Motagua fault zone, is a sequence of interlayered schist, marble, amphibolite, gneiss and associated penetratively deformed diorite, tonalite and granodiorite. Metavolcanic, metavolcaniclastic, and metasedimentary rock includes original basalt, dacitic and rhyodacitic tuff, minor andesite, limestone and pelite. Emplacement of diorite coincided with regional prograde metamorphism to middle and upper amphibolite facies. Hornblende, diopside, staurolite, sillimanite, and K-feldspar formed in rock of appropriate bulk composition. In the Zacapa quadrangle, metamorphic grade …

Lower Mississippian lithostratigraphic units in northern Arkansas are (ascending order) the Bachelor, St. Joe, and Boone Formations. These formations disconformably overlie Middle Ordovician to Upper Devonian strata and are overlain disconformably by Meramecan or Chesterian strata. The Bachelor Formation is generally a thin (less than 0.3 m), persistent, orthoquartzitic sandstone with common to abundant phosphatic pebbles overlain by a green silty shale. In northwestern Arkansas, the Bachelor Formation commonly lacks sandstone. The Bachelor Formation has been confused previously with the Sylamore (Upper Devonian) and older sandstone units. Although commonly regarded as a member of the Boone Formation, the St. Joe …

It has long been recognised that the clearing of land for agriculture in the south western Australia is followed by the development of saline soils and streams.

In 1955 and again in 1962, in conjunction with the annual statistical returns, farmers in Western Australia were asked to supply estimates of salt-affected land on their properties.

In 1974 a further survey was conducted, in co-operation with the Australian Bureau of Statistics, using questions covering only the basic information. As the information is again available on a Shire basis a direct comparison can be made with the 1962 survey except for some …

Algal-Bryozoan Carbonate Buildups Within The Pitkin Limestone (Mississippian-Chesterian), Northwest Arkansas, Alex T. Warmath

More than 14 biohermal buildups have been recognized within the Pitkin Limestone (Mississippian-Chesterian) in eastern Washington and western Madison Counties, northwest Arkansas. These buildups resemble previously described algal mounds in upper Pennsylvanian strata of the Midcontinent region, but differ in their faunal and floral constituents. The mounds are composed of calcilutite with variable amounts of spar and fossil allochemical grains. Associated flanking facies consist of mixed biosparite near the core, grading outward into oosparite. A few zones of shaly, poorly washed biomicrite containing rounded clasts bearing Archimedes fragments are interbedded with the flanking mixed biosparite facies. These clasts appear to …

Dissolved Ca, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Mn, and Zn loads of the Buffalo River generally show trends along the river attributable to changes in geology and vary with the season because of concentration by evapotranspiration and dilution by rain. Suspended material element loads show neither seasonal trends nor trends along the river. The Fe load for the river is predominantly in the suspended material, the Mn load is divided approximately evenly between dissolved and suspended material, and Ca, Mg, Na, K, and Zn are predominantly in the dissolved load.

The thesis area is located in Colorado along the east flank of the southernmost Mosquito Range, bounded by Buffalo Peaks Volcanic field on the north and Trout Creek on the south. "The Cripple Creek district consists of a deeply- eroded, breccia-filled volcanic subsidence basin. Subsidence of the basin occurred along fissures formed by fracturing during the Laramide orogeny. The material filling the crater probably developed first as fissure flows. Erosion of the volcanics formed the material now filling the basin. Volcanic activity was accompanied by intrusion of numerous sills, dikes, and stocks of several different rock types into the breccia and surrounding granite, punctuated by occasional explosive activity. 1. A.G.P. Brown and T.N. Khan - Cereal disease survey. Samples were again collected from C.V.T.s by District Office staff and sent to South Perth for evaluation. A single sampling was made in 1976 at 120 days after sowing. No samples were received from Geraldton or Three Springs trials (presumably these failed to drought). Only one sample was received from Moora, none from Merredin and only one from Jerramungup. All samples from Narrogin were lost at South Perth.
