Influence Of Nitrogen Fertilization On The Quality And Quantity Of Streamflow From A Forested Watershed, George B. Coltharp, Michael T. Shearer, Everett P. Springer, Robert F. Wittwer

This project was designed to determine the effects of nitrogen fertilization on the quality and quantity of streamflow eminating from an eastern hardwood forest watershed. A 40.67 ha watershed, located in mountainous eastern Kentucky, was aerially fertilized in late April 1975. The forest stand was principally oak, hickory, and yellow poplar, 50 - 55 years of age and in a relatively undisturbed condition. A helicopter applied anunonium nitrate at a rate of 504 kg/ha. Because a large part of applied nitrogen fertilizer ends up in the highly mobile nitrate nitrogen.form, this is the principal ion monitored in this study. No …

Effects Of Soil Injection Of Liquid Dairy Manure On The Quality Of Surface Runoff, I. J. Ross, S. Sizemore, J. P. Bowden, C. T. Haan

Liquid dairy manure has been injected on the soil contour to depths of 6 and 12 inches and applied to the surface of a Bluegrass sod and a bare tilled soil. Application rates of 9,250 gallons per acre were used. Runoff from 9-foot-square plots which were sprinkled at rates of 2.5 inches per hour on sod and 1.5 inches per hour on bare soil was collected and analyzed for various pollution parameters including COD, N, TS, TSS, pH, DO, and Fecal Coliform. The effects of pollutant yield in the runoff have been determined for various treatments.

This report summarizes the work completed under the research project "Evaluation of Dentention Basins for Controlling Urban Runoff and Sedimentation." The main project accomplishments were:

(1) a demonstration of the desirability of considering systems of urban stormwater detention basins as opposed to individual basin design,

(2) the development of a systems analysis approach for least cost selection of a system of dentention basins for meeting a preset hydrologic objective,

(3) the development of a mathematical, computer-based simulation model of the performance of sediment retention basins,

(4) partial verification of the sediment basin model and

(5) the development of design recommendations …

Paleoecology Of The Spiriferid Brachiopods Of The Silica Shale Formation (Middle Devonian), S.E. Michigan And N.W. Ohio, Darioush T. Ghahremani

Masters Theses

Spiriferid brachiopods of the Middle Devonian Silica Formation in northwestern Ohio and southeastern Michigan show many Features that are useful For paleoecologic interpretation. This study is undertaken to examine and interpret the paleoecology and paleobiology of six spiriferid brachiopods Mucrospirifer prolificus, Mucrospirifer grabaui, Mucrospirifer profundus, Mucrospirifer mucronatus, Paraspirifer bownockeri and Spinocyrtia euryteines. All are very abundant and can be easily collected from quarries in the Silica Formation near Sylvania, Ohio.

Fourteen different morphologic characteristics have been tabulated for all specimens used in this study. These characteristics allow interpretations of the ontogenetic de velopment and ecologic relationships of the six studied …

The Distribution Of Several Metals And Cation Exchange Capacity In Sediment Fractions From An Artificial And Natural Marsh, James River, Virginia, William Nivens

In order to examine the mechanisms by which Fe, Mn, Ca, Zn, Cu, Ni and Pb are bound in sediments, a sequential selective extraction procedure was employed on sediment samples collected at an experimental dredge disposal marsh and a neighboring natural marsh located near Windmill Point, James River, Va. The metal concentrations were determined in six phases, interstitial water, exchangeable, easily reducible (oxides of Mn), organic, moderately, reducible (oxides of Fe), and residual fractions. The purpose of this thesis is to report and discuss the chemistry and petrology of the axinite and scapolite occurrences in the White Oaks mining district, Lincoln County, New Mexico. Sampling, reconnaissance field geology, chemical analysis of rock samples, petrographic studies, and unit-cell d terminations for axinite and scapolite were completed for this investigation. The data was used to determine the conditions of formation for the axinite and scapolite.

The axinite is found in small pods, or nodules, of marble near the contact with the syenite-monzonite porphyry stock. The variety of axinite is ferroaxinite which occurs with calcite, actinolite, and …

An investigation was conducted to determine if the widespread and abundant use of organochlorine pesticides in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas has had any effect on the microbial flora in the water and in the bottom sediments of the Lower Rio Grande River of Texas.

Rio Grande River water and bottom sediments were cultured for microbial flora, were analyzed for pesticide residues, and the physicochemical properties of the water were determined. Samples were taken at four different sites during a ten month sampling period in 1974.

Detailed geologic mapping and subsurface study of late Pleistocene and Holocene sediments in northern Bear Lake Valley show at least four episodes of deposition of fluvial, marsh, bay, and lacustrine sediments. from oldest to youngest, these are the Ovid, Liberty, Wardboro, and Lifton episodes. These episodes are substantially different than those proposed by previous investigators. The informal term Bear Lake Formation is formally redefined here as the Bear Lake Group, and includes the newly defined Ovid Formation, Liberty Formation, Lanark Formation, and Rainbow Gravel. The overlying Wardboro Loess, also defined here, provides a probably age of 11,000 to 8,000 years …

Autecology Of Selected Genera Of Mississippian, Permian And Triassic Ammonoids: Analysis Of Coiling Geometries, Edward Ellis Chatelain

Ammonoids were collected from the Chainman Formation (Mississippian) of southeastern Nevada and southwestern Utah, the Phosphoria Formation (Permian) of southeastern Idaho and westernmost Wyoming, and the Thaynes Formation (Triassic) of northeastern Nevada and southeastern Idaho. The collections are interpreted to represent unwinnowed, untransported death assemblages of ammonoids which were subject to chemical conditions of the nekto-benthic environment. Associated lithologies were sampled and geochemically analyzed for content of phosphate and organic matter. Ammonoid fossil collections, combined with ammonoids illustrated in the literature, were subjected to the graphical W and D analysis of Raup (1967). The Cerros del Rio volcanic field is located about 10 km west of Santa Fe, New Mexico and southeast of the Jemez Mountains volcanic complex. The field lies on the Jemez- La Bajada constriction which separates the Española and the Albuquerque-Belen basins of the Rio Grande rift. At this point the rift is laterally offset 30 km. Approximately 180 sq km were mapped for this study. The northwestern map boundary parallels White Rock Canyon, a 300 m gorge which has been cut by the Rio Grande within the past 1 m. y.
