Complex Structure And Stratigraphy Of Lower Slices Of The Taconic Allochthon Near Middle Granville, New York, David B. Rowley Jan 1980

Complex Structure And Stratigraphy Of Lower Slices Of The Taconic Allochthon Near Middle Granville, New York, David B. Rowley

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The Precambrian (?) to medial Ordovician rocks of the Taconic Allochthon are characterized by argillaceous and arenaceous sediments with lesser associated carbonates, carbonate breccias, and cherts of predominantly deep-water aspect. These allochthonous rocks tectonically overlie an autochthonous to parautochthonous coeval sequence of dominantly shallow marine clastics and carbonates of the Champlain and Vermont Valley sequences. Facies, thickness, sedimentologic, and paleontologic considerations suggest that these coeval sequences represent a carbonate shelf continental rise pair of the east-facing early Paleozoic Atlantic-type margin of North America. This margin formed by the opening of an ocean in latest Precambrian time. The stratigraphy of the …

Actinocyclus Ingens Var. Nodus : A New, Stratigraphically Useful Diatom Of The Circum-North Pacific, Jack G. Baldauf, John A. Barron

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Actinocyclus ingens var, nodus Baldauf, n, var., is a morphologically distinct variety of the Miocene diatom A. ingens Ranray. The last occurrence of this new taxon approximates the top of the lower Middle Miocene Denticula Iauta Zone in the circum-North Pacific. Its first occurrence appears to be in the lower part of the D. fauta zone and possibly lies close to the Lower Miocene-Middle Miocene boundary.

Teleseismic Evidence For A Low-Velocity Body Under The Coso Geothermal Area, P. Reasenberg, W. Ellsworth, A. Walter Jan 1980

Teleseismic Evidence For A Low-Velocity Body Under The Coso Geothermal Area, P. Reasenberg, W. Ellsworth, A. Walter

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Teleseismic P wave arrivals were recorded by a dense array of seismographs tations located in the Coso geothermal area, California. The resulting pattern of relative residuals reveals an area showing approximately 0.2-s excess travel time that migrates with changing source azimuth, suggesting that the area is the 'delay shadow' produced by a deep, low-velocity body. Inversion of the relative residual data for three-dimensional velocity structure determines the lateral variations in velocity to a depth of 22.5 km beneath the array. An intense low-velocity body, which coincides with the surface expressions of late Pleistocene rhyolitic volcanism, high heat flow, and hydrothermal …

State Of Stress In The Conterminous United States, Mary Lou Zoback, Mark D. Zoback Jan 1980

State Of Stress In The Conterminous United States, Mary Lou Zoback, Mark D. Zoback

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Inferring principal stress directions from geologic data, focal mechanisms, and in situ stress measurements, we have prepared a map of principal horizontal stress orientations for the conterminous United States. Stress provinces with linear dimensions which range between 100 and 2000 km were defined on the  basis of the directions and relative magnitude of principal stresses. Within a given province, stress orientations appear quite uniform (usually within the estimated range of accuracy of the different methods used to determine  stress). Available data on the transition in stress direction between the different stress provinces indicate that these transitions can be abrupt, occurring …

Petrology Of The Cenozoic Igneous Rocks Of The Lytle Creek Area, Bear Lodge Mountains, Wyoming, Stanely F. White Jan 1980

Petrology Of The Cenozoic Igneous Rocks Of The Lytle Creek Area, Bear Lodge Mountains, Wyoming, Stanely F. White

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to map and study the petrology of the Cenozoic igneous rocks that crop out in the Lytle Creek area located in the southwestern Bear Lodge Mountains of northeastern Wyoming. Petro graphic and chemical data is used to interpret the Cenozoic phonolite trachyte rock association.

Cenozoic igneous activity in the Lytle Creek area appears to have been a response to the Laramide orogeny 80-40 m.y. B.P. The majority of the rocks were emplaced as laccoliths and sills at the Pahasapa Formation-Minnelusa Formation contact or at the Spearfish Formation Sundance Formation contact. Porphyritic volcanic textures are …

Molluscan Paleontology Of The Pliocene Peace Valley "Beds" And Ridge Route "Formation" (Ridge Basin Group), Ridge Basin, Southern California, Daniel R. Young

Theses and Dissertations

The Ridge Basin, 90 km northwest of Los Angeles, California, lies within the San Gabriel, San Andreas, Liebre, and Clearwater fault zones. The basin is an elongated, wedge-shaped, intermontane, Miocene-Pliocene basin filled with about 12 000 m of marine, lacustrine, fluvial, and alluvial sediment. More than half of the thickness of the Ridge Route "formation" and about one fifth of the Peace Valley "beds" was examined for molluscs along the northeastern side of the basin and more than 600 m of section were measured.

The nonmarine molluscs of the Ridge Route "formation" and Peace Valley "beds" consist of ten species: …

Periglacial Landforms And Processes In The Southern Kenai Mountains, Alaska, Palmer K. Bailey Jan 1980

Periglacial Landforms And Processes In The Southern Kenai Mountains, Alaska, Palmer K. Bailey

Theses and Dissertations

The distribution and characteristics of periglacial landforms in the southern Kenai Mountains, Alaska, were investigated during the summer of 1979. The principal area of study was a 1300-metre high mountain mass which stood as a nunatak during the last general glaciation. Periglacial features in the area include gelifluction lobes, nivation hollows, cryoplanation terraces, tors, a string bog, and various for111S of patterned ground such as sorted circles, sorted polygons, earth hummocks, sorted steps, sorted stripes, and small ice-wedge polygons.

Ground temperature measurements indicate that permafrost recently existed in the area but is no longer present. The sorted polygons, cryoplsnation terraces, …

Origin Of Hawaiian Tholeiites: Trace Element Constraints, W. P. Leeman, J. R. Budahn, D. C. Gerlach, Diane R. Smith, B. N. Powell Jan 1980

Origin Of Hawaiian Tholeiites: Trace Element Constraints, W. P. Leeman, J. R. Budahn, D. C. Gerlach, Diane R. Smith, B. N. Powell

Earth and Environmental Geosciences Faculty Research

We report here geochemical studies of Hawaiian tholeiites and ultramafic xenoliths from Salt Lake Crater, Oahu. We focus attention on tholeiitic basalts that comprise the bulk of Hawaiian volcanoes. When the samples are screened to include only those lying neat the log-MgO (about 7 percent) end of olivine-control lines (Wright, 1971), tholeiites from individual volcanoes are remarkably uniform. On this basis, we show that, for tholeiites from six volcanoes, systematic geochemical differences exist that cannot be attributed to differentiation of these magmas from a common parental magma. Apparently there have been important differences in the processes of magma generation, source …

Preliminary Investigation Of The Ground-Water Resources Of Northern Searcy County, Arkansas, Wyndal M. Goodman, Albert E. Ogden Jan 1980

Preliminary Investigation Of The Ground-Water Resources Of Northern Searcy County, Arkansas, Wyndal M. Goodman, Albert E. Ogden

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Two aquifers are extensively used by residents of small communities and rural areas in northern Searcy County, Arkansas. The Mississippian Boone-St. Joe aquifer is generally the less productive and the shallower of the two. Ground-water yields for the Boone-St. Joe range from 0.5 to 75 gpm with a median yield of 5 and a mean of 9.8 gpm. Well depths range from 100 to 754 feet with a median depth of 350 feet and a mean of 360 feet. Confined conditions are indicated by the greater depths, whereas the Boone-St. Joe aquifer is unconfined when exposed at the surface. Underlying …

Preliminary Investigation Of The Ground-Water Resources Of Baxter, Fulton, Izard And Sharp Counties, Arkansas, Mike Liebelt, Gerald Lundy, Albert E. Ogden

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

One hundred and seventy-seven drillers' well reports were used to investigate the groundwater resources of Baxter, Fulton, Izard, and Sharp counties. The most widely utilized aquifer zone is composed of the Cotter and Jefferson City dolomites. The well depths range from 30 to 740 ft. with a mean and median of 264 and 225 ft., respectively. The drillers' yield estimates range from 1 to 50 gpm with a mean of 12.0 gpm and a median of 10 gpm. The piezometric surface has an average hydraulic gradient of 9 ft./mile with groundwater discharge occurring along the Spring and White Rivers. Overlying …

Fossil Algae In The St. Louis Limestone, Near St. Louis, Missouri, Sherris Ragsdale Myers Jan 1980

Fossil Algae In The St. Louis Limestone, Near St. Louis, Missouri, Sherris Ragsdale Myers

Masters Theses

"Although Mississippian algae research is fairly extensive, little has been published on algae from the Mississippian type locality, the Upper Mississippi River Valley. For this study, portions of sixteen St. Louis Limestone stratigraphic sections containing units with oncolites, domal stromatolites, laminations, or mottled (possibly algal) textures, were measured, described, and sampled to determine: (1) to what extent algae are preserved in the St. Louis Limestone, (2) if enough of the delicate structure was fossilized to determine morphology, (3) depositional environment of the algae, and (4) if the algae are related to a lithologic pattern. Thin sections of the sampled units …

Associated alloclastic breccia with a crystal-charged volcanic glass matrix, surrounding depressions representing collapse of igneous material back into the vent, striking similarity to known volcante necks, and the occurrence of other extrusive volcan1S11\ …

Distribution And Origin Of Elongate Sandstone Concretions, Bullion Creek And Slope Formations (Paleocene), Adams County, North Dakota, Michael W. Parsons Jan 1980

Distribution And Origin Of Elongate Sandstone Concretions, Bullion Creek And Slope Formations (Paleocene), Adams County, North Dakota, Michael W. Parsons

Theses and Dissertations

Rectilinear patterns in sandstone are visible on aerial photo graphs of Adams County, North Dakota. These patterns result from the differential erosion of elongate, calcareous, sandstone concretions that have formed in fluvial channel sand units.

The distribution and orientation of the elongate concretions were mapped from aerial photographs. The concretions have a strongly east-west orientation. Averages of paleocurrent measurements of the associated sand and sandstone are also easterly.

The elongate concretions occur slightly above and below the Rhame bed (a white marker zone at the top of the Slope Formation), in sand units at the base of the Bullion Creek …
