Altered Volcanic Ash Partings In The C Coal Bed, Ferron Sandstone Member Of The Mancos Shale, Emery County, Utah, United States Geological Survey Jan 1981

Altered Volcanic Ash Partings In The C Coal Bed, Ferron Sandstone Member Of The Mancos Shale, Emery County, Utah, United States Geological Survey

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

When volcanic ash falls onto the surface of a peat-forming swamp and is then covered by peat, it forms a horlzontal parting that can be recognized in the subsequent coal bed. As a consequence of the acid leaching environment in the swamp, the original glassy component and some of the less resistant pyrogenic minerals in the ash alter to clay minerals, usually kaolinite.

Selected Biological Characteristics Of Streams In The Southeastern Uinta Basin, Utah And Colorado, United States Geological Survey Jan 1981

Selected Biological Characteristics Of Streams In The Southeastern Uinta Basin, Utah And Colorado, United States Geological Survey

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Biological sampling was carried out during 1976-78 in five streams in the southeastern Uinta Basin, Utah and Colorado, in order to provide baseline water-quality data for an area of potential oil-shale development. The biological activity in the streams sampled generally is limited by physical factors more so than by chemical constituents and plant nutrients. Characteristics of streamflow, such as high turbidity, fluctuating water levels, and moderate to high salinity, limit production of flora and fauna biomass.

An improved computer modeling program was used to calculate the saturation indexes of 50 waters from the Beaver basin in west-central Utah with respect to uraninite and coffinite. The mineral-solution study showed that the chemical environment of parts of the Beaver basin is favorable for the occurrence of sandstone-type uranium deposits. The ground waters from several areas are supersaturated with respect to uraninite and coffinite. Two areas, in particular, an area west of the town of Beaver and an area near the settlement of Manderfield, have been identified as most favorable for exploration. The methods described in this study can …

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Rock, stream-sediment, and hydrogeochemical surveys were conducted in the Mount Belknap caldera area, south-central Utah, during the summer of 1979. The presence of leucocratic rocks and relatively high concentrations of the elements Nb, Be, Ga, Y, Pb, Sn, Mo, and F with corresponding low concentrations of the elements Ba, Mg, Ca, Fe, Sr, and Cu suggests that late phase highly differentiated felsic magmas were intruded and (or) erupted in the caldera vicinity. The presence of Mo and Sn in the rocks and F in the water samples suggest that the ore elements were concentrated, first in residual fluids in the …

Visual Impacts Of Forest Management Activities: Findings On Public Preferences, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

A major concern of forest land managers is the visual impact that activities such as timber harvest, road building, and mining have on the forest landscape. Management of the visual resource is a regular part of planning on National Forests, and many other public and private forest land managers are increasing their efforts to protect and enhance this resource. The Forest Residue and Harvesting Research Program at the Intermountain Station includes studies of the impact of harvest and roading activities on visual quality. Preliminary results were reported earlier (Schweitzer, Ullrich, and Benson 1976). This report updates earlier findings and presents …
