Use Of Multispectral Scanner Images For Assessment Of Hydrothermal Alteration In The Marysvale, Utah, Mining Area, United States Geological Survey
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Multispectral images of an area near Marysvale, Utah, were collected by using the airborne U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) 24-channel Bendix multispectral scanner; they were analyzed to define areas of hydrothermally altered, potentially mineralized rocks. Hydrothermally altered rocks, particularly volcanic rocks affected by solutions rich in sulfuric acid, are commonly characterized by concentrations of argillic minerals such as alunite and kaolinite. These minerals are important for identifying hydrothermally altered rocks in multispectral images because they have an intense absorption band centered near a wavelength of 2.2 um. Unaltered volcanic rocks commonly lack these minerals and hence do not …

The northern San Rafael Swell area in southeastern Utah includes about 2,880 square miles (7,460 square kilometers) and ranges in altitude from about 3,290 to 7,921 feet (1,195 to 2,414 meters). Precipitation, the main source of water in the area, ranges from slightly less than 6 inches (152 millimeters) to slightly more than 12 inches (305 millimeters). Rocks that underlie the area range from Precambrian to Holocene in age. The thickness of sedimentary rocks ranges from 4,083 feet (1,244 meters) to about 30,000 feet (9,140 meters). The Entrada, Navajo, Wingate, and Coconino Sandstones and rocks of Mississippian age are considered …
Sorrel, Dicamba Soil Residual Effects, Glean, Veldt Grass, Declared Weeds Blackberry, Pattersons Curse, Penny Royal, J Moore
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
CONCLUSIONS This trial has confirmed the field observation that 2,4,5-T whilst giving good initial control of Pennyroyal, fails after a number of years. Round up has a far longer term effect. This can only be attributed to a more complete initial kill as both herbicides are essentially non residual. Further work needs to be conducted on Round up in combination with soil residual chemicals or multiple applications to overcome the problem of reinfestation from seed reserves. 81A1 -01
Threshold Friction Velocities And Rupture Moduli For Crusted Desert Soils For The Input Of Soil Particles Into The Air, Dale A. Gillette, John Adams, Daniel R. Muhs, Rolf Kihl
Threshold Friction Velocities And Rupture Moduli For Crusted Desert Soils For The Input Of Soil Particles Into The Air, Dale A. Gillette, John Adams, Daniel R. Muhs, Rolf Kihl
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Desert soils having clay crusts, mostly from the Mojave Desert, were tested for threshold friction velocity (the friction velocity at which soil erosion begins) with an open-bottomed wind tunnel. The soils were also tested for content of clay, water-soluble material, calcium carbonate, organic material, mineralogy of clay and of salts, soil moisture, modulus of rupture, and crust thickness. If no loose material existed on the soil surface, crusts having modulus of rupture greater than 0.7 bar and crust thickness of 0.7 cm to 0.3 cm were effective in protecting against wind erosion. Disturbed clay crusts having modulus of rupture before …
Diatom Biostratigraphy And Paleoecology Of The Type Section Of The Luisian Stage, Central California, Jack G. Baldauf, John A. Barron
Diatom Biostratigraphy And Paleoecology Of The Type Section Of The Luisian Stage, Central California, Jack G. Baldauf, John A. Barron
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Diatoms from the type section of the Luisian Stage in central California correlate with the lowermost part of the Denticulopsis lauta Zone through the lower part of subzone "a" of the Denticulopsis hustedtii –D. lauta Zone and are early Middle Miocene in age (about 16.0 to 14.0 Ma}. Rocks assigned to the Luisian Stage by benthic foraminifers elsewhere in California exhibit little diachroneity in terms of diatom biostratigraphy; however, detailed studies of boundaries have not been done. Planktic diatoms dominate the assemblages, although an increase in benthic and tychopelagic diatoms in the overlying Hames Member of the Monterey Formation probably …

Regional Implications Of The Geology Of The Ogallala Group (Upper Tertiary) Of Southwestern Morrill County, Nebraska, And Adjacent Areas, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications
A part of a filled Ogallala Group (upper Tertiary) paleovalley system exhumed by recent stream erosion in southwestern Morrill County, Nebraska, and adjacent areas contains steep gradient gullies filled with locally derived sediments. Younger channels filled with granitic gravels derived by stream erosion of the Rocky Mountains to the west and southwest cut across and through these older filled gullies, indicating that there were at least two periods of downcutting followed by periods of filling during the development of this system.
Individual clasts from younger Ogallala gravels are often as large as or larger than clasts from Quaternary gravels transported …

The Distribution And Properties Of Lateritic Gravels At Yalanbee And Their Interactions With Soil Phosphorus, David Weaver
The Distribution And Properties Of Lateritic Gravels At Yalanbee And Their Interactions With Soil Phosphorus, David Weaver
All other publications
This study aimed at investigating the distributive patterns and properties of lateritic gravels at "Yalanbee" (C.S.I.R.O. research station) and how these properties and patterns e ffect the adsorption of phosphorus onto the lateritic gravels. It also aimed partly at investigating the effect of the presence of lateritic gravels on the adsorption of phosphate by "whole soils". Gravels in the Yalanbee soil had migrated since their formation as was shown by their abundance and large size at the top of a slope which graded to less abundant, smaller and more rounded gravels further down the s lope. The distribution of gravels …
Effect Of Herbicides On Performance Of Aerobic Dairy Lagoons, John D. Bottom, Joseph L. Taraba
Effect Of Herbicides On Performance Of Aerobic Dairy Lagoons, John D. Bottom, Joseph L. Taraba
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
The herbicides glyphosate, bromacil, and dalapon were assessed for their affect on the oxygen uptake of microorganisms from an aerated dairy lagoon at 20 °C. The maximum recommended addition of herbicide active ingerdient to a lagoon is: glyphosate (isopropyl amino salt)—0.42 mg/L; bromacil—3.70 mg/L; and dalapon (85.8 percent Na salt and 14.2 percent Mg salt)—1.95 mg/L. In addition, microorganism isolates from the aerobic dairy lagoon were incubated under aerobic and anerobic conditions at room temperature to assess the effects of the herbicides. Under aerobic incubation, it was found that neither herbicide type nor herbicide concentration affected isolate growth. Under anaerobic …

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
The excessive amounts of nutrients entering the Peel-Harvey Estuarine system have resulted in a marked increase in the abundance of algal species .within the estuary and reduced production on the sandy coastal soils of the catchment from which the nutrients are being leached. Recent stream samplings by D.C.E have shown that the deep grey Bassendean sands may be contributing up to 40 per cent of the total P loading in the Harvey River. Agriculture Department trials around Albany on similar sands have shown that up to 80 per cent of the bicarb extractable P may be lost after only 150 …
