Residue Trials: Breakdown rates have been established for trifluralin at Wongan Hills and Avondale over the past two seasons. The decay curve follows a hyperbolic curve rather than the expected exponential curve with constant half life, probably due to the considerable loss of chemical by volatalization in the first few days, before biological decomposition takes over as the main breakdown factor.

Annual Medics For The Kalgoorlie Region And Adjacent Eastern Rangeland Zones, G Gintzburger
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Species selection and establishment methods Extensive overgrazing and burning of the dominant winter rainfall Goldfields pastoral zones have left large areas degraded with a poor annual vegetation cover of nearly no grazing value. Thus, more grazing pressure is exerted on shrubs and small trees accelerating the desertification process. Shrubs and trees are the main stabilising agent left in a rangeland plant community when alI annuals have been grazed out. In order to upgrade or regenerate some of these areas, conventional methods of grazing prohibition or deferred grazing can be used but often, improvement obtained are slow. It is hypothesized that …

Miocene Burrows Of Extinct Bear Dogs: Indication Of Early Denning Behavior Of Large Mammalian Carnivores, Robert M. Hunt Jr., Xue Xiang-Xu, Joshua Kaufman
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Partial skeletons off our species of extinct carnivores have been found in their dens excavated in the floodplain of an early Miocene ephemeral braided stream at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Nebraska. Bear dogs (Carnivora: Amphicyonidae) were the principal occupants; their den dimensions and body size are similar to those of living wolves and hyenas. Discovery of this predator community extends the record of denning behavior of large mammalian carnivores to the early Miocene, 20 million years ago.

In Situ Studies Of Velocity In Fractured Crystalline Rocks, Daniel Moos, Mark D. Zoback
In Situ Studies Of Velocity In Fractured Crystalline Rocks, Daniel Moos, Mark D. Zoback
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
A study of the effects of macroscopic fractures on P and S wave velocities has been conducted in four wells drilled in granitic rock to depths between 0.6 and 1.2km. The effect of macroscopic fractures is to decrease both Vp, and Vs and increase Vp/Vs. In wells with a relatively low density of macroscopic fractures, the in situ velocitiys similar to that of saturated core samples under confining pressure in the laboratory, and there is a clear correlation between zones with macroscopic fractures and anomalously low velocities. In wells with numerous macroscopic fractures, …

A Hydrochemical Reconnaissance Study Of The Walker River Basin, California And Nevada, Larry Benson, R. J. Spencer
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
During 1975 and 1976, a large number of water and sediment samples were collected from the Walker River Basin. Additional surface water samples were collected during 1980 and 1981. Data are given herein for chemical analyses of snowmelt, tributary, river, spring, well, lake, reservoir, lake sediment pore fluid, tufa, lake and river sediment samples. These data provide the basis for consideration of processes which govern the chemical evolution of large closed basin hydrologic systems in the Basin and Range Province of the Southwestern United States.
The Walker River Basin, a part of the Basin and Range Province, is located i~ …
Raw Water Quality In The New Charleston, Illinois Pump Storage Reservoir, Kevin G. Lookis
Raw Water Quality In The New Charleston, Illinois Pump Storage Reservoir, Kevin G. Lookis
Masters Theses
Charleston, Illinois, a city located in east-central Illinois, recently implemented a new concept in a raw water system. Due to storage capacity-sedimentation problems in the old Lake Charleston-Embarras River raw water supply, the Charleston Pump Storage Reservoir was constructed. The new system involved building a dike separating the Lake Charleston impoundment from the Embarras River. Water to increase the storage capacity of the reservoir can now be selectively pumped into the impoundment from the river.
Raw water quality in the reservoir was monitored on a weekly basis for a full year from August, 1981 to August, 1982. The levels of …
Residual Phytotoxicity Of Mon-097 In Sludge Enriched Soils, Jennifer A. Woods
Residual Phytotoxicity Of Mon-097 In Sludge Enriched Soils, Jennifer A. Woods
Masters Theses
Aerobically and anaerobically digested sludges were added to soil at concentrations of 0, 1, 5, and 10% (v/v). Dry weights of Avena sativa var. Noble plants, harvested 28 days after planting, were greater with increased sludge concentrations. Plant dry weights were consistently greater with aerobically than with anaerobically digested sludge. MON-097, an acetanilide herbicide, was applied to these soil/sludge mixtures at concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 ppm. Residual phytotoxicity of MON-097 was not significantly affected by sludge concentration. These results suggest that increased concentrations of sludge in the soil do not contribute to detoxification …

Classification Of Pseudokarst Forms In Czechoslovakia, Jan Vitek
Classification Of Pseudokarst Forms In Czechoslovakia, Jan Vitek
International Journal of Speleology
The paper is a geomorphological classification of pseudokarst forms in Czechoslovakia/Bohemien Massif and the Carpathians. In the author’s opinion, forms occurring in non-carbonate rocks, are morphologically and often genetically analogous to the forms of karst relief, and are pseudokarst phenomena. They are divided according to their size into macroforms in sandstone morphostructures of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin some types of rocky valleys, water-shed plains and ridges, forming rock cities in some places, mesoforms with six types of caves, sinkholes, rock perforations and several rock phenomena and microforms such as weather pits and niches, lapies, etc.. The most prominent pseudokarst phenomena …
Lattice Deformation And Curvature In Stalactitic Carbonate, Paul L. Broughton
Lattice Deformation And Curvature In Stalactitic Carbonate, Paul L. Broughton
International Journal of Speleology
The cause of lattice curvature is related to the nature of growth on a curved surface, peculiar to stalactites and stalagmites. Lattice curvature in stalactitic carbonate results from the coalescence of sub-parallel to divergent syntaxial overgrowth crystallites on the growing surface of stalactites and stalagmites. Moderate lattice mismatch results in an undulose extinction, or subcrystal domains, whereas more divergent growth favours marked lattice curvature recognized by its optical brush-extinction. Extreme lattice mismatch between the precursor crystallites results a columnar crystal boundary instead of lattice curvature.
Environmental Implications Of Competitive Growth Fabrics In Stalactitic Carbonate, Paul L. Broughton
Environmental Implications Of Competitive Growth Fabrics In Stalactitic Carbonate, Paul L. Broughton
International Journal of Speleology
Competitive growth fabrics in stalactitic carbonate are not as widespread as commonly supposed. Most radial columnar crystals are attributed to the coalescence of a precursor crystallite mosaic comprised of syntaxial overgrowths. This secondary fabric is the consequence of carbonate precipitation from a thin water film. Competitive growth, however, is much rarer and arises from two contrasting environments: an influx of detritus interrupting carbonate precipitation, and cave flooding. Thick layers of impurities favour deposition of randomly oriented seed crystals on the growth surface. These result in competitive growth centres when the renewal of carbonate precipitation fails to have crystallographic allegience to …
On The Wad-Minerals From The Cavern Environment, Naruhiko Kashima
On The Wad-Minerals From The Cavern Environment, Naruhiko Kashima
International Journal of Speleology
The wad-minerals from limestone caves of Yugoslavia, China and Japan were studied. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed five minerals; birnessite, 10A-manganite, pyrolusite, todorokite and goethite. The heavy metal elements, Mn, Zn, Fe and Cr have been detected by X-ray fluorescence analysis and their contents were roughly determined. The condensation water introduced directly from the covering soils formed by the continental weathering and the deriving corrosive water interaction with limestone could be the input sources of manganese and other metal elements into the system.
Secondary Origin Of The Radial Fabric In Stalactitic Carbonate, Paul L. Broughton
Secondary Origin Of The Radial Fabric In Stalactitic Carbonate, Paul L. Broughton
International Journal of Speleology
The growth surfaces of most stalactites are interpreted as numerous syntaxial overgrowth crystallites. These coalesce immediately behind the growth surface, often trapping portions of the water film as fluid-filled cavities. The fluid inclusions represent former inter-crystallite spaces and characterize the widely misinterpreted “growth ring”. Complete crystallite coalescence generates inclusions-free calcite, whereas inhibition of lateral coalescence of the overgrowth crystallites generates layers of acicular calcite. It is generally only during periods of cave flooding that the crystallites merge and overgrow each other and precipitation eventually occurs upon large, planar crystal faces. Stalactitic carbonate growth is secondary, from a multi-crystalline precursor that …

International Journal of Speleology
In the present work, the problems of leakages happened in Tous’s dam (Valencia-Spain) are studied. Tous’s dam is built on karstic terrains with the existence of caverns and strike-slip faults that at the same time become karstic. In this study the techniques of structural geology are applied, so, we deduct the karstic drainage directions, by using determined hypothesis of work. The confirmation of these hypotheses in the course of our fieldwork has permitted to quantify the probability of those leakages for each direction we found. This circumstance has permitted to foretell the places where it would be possible to expect …

The Precambrian Volcanic Stratigraphy And Petrology Of The Des Arc Ne 7 1/2 Minute Quadrangle, South Central St. Francois Mountains, Missouri, Vernon Max Brown
Doctoral Dissertations
"The Precambrian volcanics in the Des Arc NE 7½ minute quadrangle are composed predominantly of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs with minor rhyolitic, trachytic, and andesitic lavas, and basaltic dikes. Thirty-seven volcanic units were identified, mapped, and informally named. A minimum of 1,000 meters of volcanic section is present. The rhyolites consist of phenocrysts of albitized alkali feldspar, albitic plagioclase, quartz, opaques, and ferromagnesium relicts set in a devitrified and locally recrystallized felsitic matrix. Pumice and lithophysal structures are common in the ash flows.
Chemically, the rhyolites are quite similar. The potassium to sodium ratio in individual units, however, tends to vary …
