Foliar Fertilization Of Burley Tobacco At Topping, Kenneth L. Wells, Kim D. Strohmeier Jan 1989

Foliar Fertilization Of Burley Tobacco At Topping, Kenneth L. Wells, Kim D. Strohmeier

Soil Science News and Views

Many burley growers follow the practice of applying 1-2 gallons/A of liquid fertilizer to their tobacco crop by mixing it with their sucker control chemical and spraying the combined mixture on the crop soon after topping. This practice is thought to improve yields. However, previously reported testing of this practice by the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture indicated that it did not improve yields.

The Nitrogen Response Of Wheat Crops Following Lupins, I C. Rowland, Mel Mason, John Hamblin Jan 1989

The Nitrogen Response Of Wheat Crops Following Lupins, I C. Rowland, Mel Mason, John Hamblin

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

One of the many benefitsof growing narrow-leaved lupins in a crop rotation (Rowland et al 1988) in the increased yield of the following cereal crop as a result of the improved nitrogen level of the soil.

This article reports the results from 41 wheat/lupin rotation trials involving a range of nitrogen rates throughout the Western Australian agricultural area between 1978 and 1987. These trials allowed scientists to assess the interaction of nitrogen fertilization with previous cropping history and to estimate some of the contribution of the nitrogen and other effects of lupins within the crop rotations. The results provide some …

Trees For Windbreaks On Swan Coastal Plain Farms, Leon English, Ken Angell, Metropolitan District Office, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Jan 1989

Trees For Windbreaks On Swan Coastal Plain Farms, Leon English, Ken Angell, Metropolitan District Office, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

Strong easterly and south-westerly winds are a feature of the Swan Coastal Plain and we receive frequent inquiries about which tree species are suitable for planting as windbreaks. When selecting trees for windbreaks you must match the species to the various soil types which occur along the Coastal Plain. The mature height of the tree is also an important consideration in good windbreak design. This Bulletin lists species which are suitable for windbreaks in descending order of mature height and indicates the soil type(s) on which they should be planted.

Geologic Evolution Of Trail Ridge Eolian Heavy-Mineral Sand And Underlying Peat, Northern Florida, Eric Force, Fredrick J. Rich Jan 1989

Geologic Evolution Of Trail Ridge Eolian Heavy-Mineral Sand And Underlying Peat, Northern Florida, Eric Force, Fredrick J. Rich

Earth, Environment & Sustainability: Faculty Publications

The southern portion of Trail Ridge in Clay County, Fla., has been an important domestic source of altered ilmenite, zircon, and other minerals since 1949. The ridge as a physiographic feature extends in a north-south direction over 160 km and is 1 to 2 km wide. The ore is a fine- to medium-grained sand body that extends down from the crest of the ridge about 20 m. Average heavy-mineral content is about 4 percent. Over half of the ilmenite and zircon is contained in thin, dark laminae dipping 26° to 41 ° southwest; these laminae extend deep within the ore …

Surface Sediments And Their Relationship To Water Quality In Hillsborough Bay, A Highly Impacted Subdivision Of Tampa Bay, Florida, J.O.R. Johansson, A.P. Squires

Reports

This paper will summarize the composition of surface sediment and sediment oxygen demand rated in Hillsborough Bay. Also, a first attempt is made to relate the nutrients released from these sediments to the phytoplankton, the dominant primary producers of the bay.

Distribution Patterns And Accumulation Rates Of Fine-Grained Sediments In Upper Tampa Bay, Florida, Gregg R. Brooks

Reports

Tampa Bay, a drowned river valley, is the largest estuary on Florida's west coast.

Surface sediments consist of a mixture of carbonate and terrigenous clastic sands and muds.

The objectives of this study are to determine accumulation rates and processes controlling the distribution patterns of fine grain sediments.

Effectiveness Of Tile Drainage On Karnak Silty Clay Soil, Gerald R. Haszler Jan 1989

Effectiveness Of Tile Drainage On Karnak Silty Clay Soil, Gerald R. Haszler

Soil Science News and Views

Artificial drainage of agricultural lands has been practiced for centuries. Earlier techniques devised were open ditches to drain the excess water. The widescale development of subsurface tile drains began with the production and availability of clay tiles. Today, corrugated plastic pipe is the most popular and efficient way to install subsurface drainage lines. The objective of agricultural soil drainage is the removal and disposal of excess water from the rooting zone in order to improve soil productivity. The 1971 Soil Conservation Service (SCS) handbook estimated that 130 million acres or about one-third of all crop land in the United States …

Pleistocene And Holocene Carbonate Environments On San Salvador Island, Bahamas: A Field Trip Guide, H. Allen Curran, Roger J. Bain, James L. Carew, John E. Mylroie, James W. Teeter, Brian White

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Although isolated and small in size, San Salvador Island is in many ways a unique place - an all carbonates setting on a small, tectonically stable platform, surrounded by deep oceanic waters, and an historical footnote as the widely accepted first landing site of Christopher Columbus in the New World in 1492. Columbus' stay here was brief, and the major events of subsequent history largely have passed San Salvador by. This is not a tourist island; the natural beauty, floras, and faunas of the Bahamas are well preserved here.

The overview theme of this series of field excursions on San …

New Block Badgingarra Rs Late Time Of Seeding., J. W. Bowden, R. J. Lunt

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trial 89BA33,

Location: Badgingarra

Based on a 1.5 t/ha potential yield, the strategic treatment was planned to be 120 kg urea/ha 4WAS. However, the crop was poorly established and so NH4NO3 was used in the hope of getting better tillering than would be possible with the slower release urea source. Gambling on equal dollars to urea for 2/3 N, but believe that twice as effective.

DAP was used to place nitrogen with the seed in case there was no rain of significance after seeding. This nitrogen (only 5 kg/ha) was probably lost with the rains of 20-28/7/89 (50 mm). Urea …
