Alternative Usages Of Wetlands Other Than Conventional Farming In Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, And Nebraska, Ellen Leventhal, Hubert H. Humphrey
Alternative Usages Of Wetlands Other Than Conventional Farming In Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, And Nebraska, Ellen Leventhal, Hubert H. Humphrey
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Conversion of wetlands in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska into agricultural dry lands in the past several decades has occurred as a means to obtain profit from what landowners would otherwise consider unprofitable land. This activity has resulted in substantial losses of wetlands valued for their unique ability to mitigate flood and storm damage, control erosion, discharge and recharge groundwater, improve water quality, and support a wide diversity of fish, wildlife, and vegetation.
Utilizing fish, wildlife, and vegetation from wetlands for profit is a way for wetland owners to recognize the value their wetlands add to their property. Landowners then …
Recent Secular Variations In The Extent Of Northern Hemisphere Snow Cover, David A. Robinson, Kenneth F. Dewey
Recent Secular Variations In The Extent Of Northern Hemisphere Snow Cover, David A. Robinson, Kenneth F. Dewey
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Northern hemisphere snow cover during 1988 and 1989 was at its lowest extent since the advent of reliable satellite snow-cover monitoring 1972; running some 8-10% below the eighteen-year annual mean of 25.7 million km2 . Monthly minima for the period of record occurred six times during these two years. In general, the last nine years of the satellite record had less extensive cover than the 1972-80 interval. Negative anomalies during the 1980s were largest over Eurasia in all seasons, and in the Spring over North America. Hemispheric seasonal means for the most recent nine years were 3.7% to 8.4% …

Vertebrate Paleontology Of The Koum Basin, Northern Cameroon, And Archosaurian Paleobiogeography In The Early Cretaceous, John Deforest Congleton Jr.
Earth Sciences Theses and Dissertations
The Koum basin is located in West Africa and is a halfgraben filled with Cretaceous and younger sediments. It formed in response to tectonic stresses that preceded the development of the Benue trough and the final connection of the North and South Atlantic Oceans. The Cretaceous sediments, up to 3000 meters thick, represent lacustrine, fluvial, and alluvial fan deposits, and suggest an axiallydrained half-graben sedimentation model.
Archosaur fossils recovered from the eastern Koum basin include the teeth of two terrestrial crocodylians (cf. Araripesuchus wegeneri and cf. Sebecosuchia) teeth of sauropod and two kinds of theropod dinosaurs (cf. Spinosauridae and Theropoda …

Metal Speciation And Immobilization Reactions Affecting The True Efficiency Of Artificial Wetlands To Treat Acid Mine Drainage, Anastasios D. Karathanasis, Y. L. Thompson
KWRRI Research Reports
The ability of constructed wetlands to lower total metal concentrations and organically complex metals in acid mine drainage (AMD) was investigated under greenhouse and field conditions. In the greenhouse study, Typha plants grown in six different substrates received simulated acid mine drainage of low metal load for five months. Most effluents, especially those from ground flows, showed significant decreases in acidity and metal concentrations. The pine needle and hay substrates most effectively reduced acidity and total Al levels. Effluents from these substrates contained 80% less total Al than respective influents. Organically complexed Al levels were independent of matrix and varied …
Toward Better Minimum Tillage For South-Coastal Sandplain Soils, W L. Crabtree
Toward Better Minimum Tillage For South-Coastal Sandplain Soils, W L. Crabtree
Resource management technical reports
Seventeen farmers compared their conventional cropping practices with some form of minimum tillage cropping. The minimum tilled crops yielded 21 percent less grain than the conventionally sown crops. The reasons for these decreased yields were in most cases related to inexperienced management. The minimum tilled treatments usually had very poor weed kill strategies which often resulted in large weeds at sowing, very cloddy seed-beds, and numerous insects in the young crops.

KWRRI Research Reports
A comprehensive model has been developed for use in modeling the hydrologic response of rill network systems. The model, which is called HYMODRIN, is composed of both a hydrologic runoff component and a hydraulic channel routing component. The hydrologic component of the model uses a Green Ampt infiltration approach linked with a nonlinear reservoir runoff model. The channel routing component of the model is baaed on a finite element solution of the diffusion wave equations. In order to account for backwater effects the model employs a dual level iteration scheme.
The model may be used in either a stand alone …
Modeling Mass Transport In Aquifers: The Distributed Source Problem, Sergio E. Serrano
Modeling Mass Transport In Aquifers: The Distributed Source Problem, Sergio E. Serrano
KWRRI Research Reports
This report presents a new methodology to model the time and space evolution of groundwater variables in a system of aquifers when certain components of the model, such as the geohydrologic information, the boundary conditions, the magnitude and variability of the sources or physical parameters are uncertain and defined in stochastic terms. This facilitates a more realistic statistical representation of groundwater flow and groundwater pollution forecasting for either the saturated or the unsaturated zone. The method is based on applications of modern mathematics to the solution of the resulting stochastic transport equations. This procedure exhibits considerable advantages over the existing …

Effects Of Aromatic Concentration On Methane Fermentation, Yi-Tin Wang, Pin-Chieh Pai, H. David Gabbard
KWRRI Research Reports
The anaerobic biodegradability and toxicity of fourteen aromatic compounds were evaluated over a wide range of concentrations using a serum bottle technique. Benzene, toluene, and all three isomers of xylene were not significantly degraded to methane in a phenol-enriched culture. Complete degradation of 1000 mg/L phenol, 800 mg/L catechol, 100 mg/L 2-NP, 100 mg/L 3- NP, and 100 mg/L 4-NP was observed within two months while depletion of 100 mg/L resorcinol and 1000 mg/L hydroquinone required more than six and eight months incubation, respectively. None of the three isomers of chlorophenol were degraded in the phenol-enriched culture. Batch toxicity assay …

Hydrogeology And Hydrogeochemistry Of The Tekonsha Moraine And Adjacent Interlobate Deposits In Charleston Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Victor V. Melbardis
Masters Theses
Hydrogeochemical analyses and hydrogeologic interpretations provide the basis for an understanding of local ground-water flow, in a 12 square mile study area, transected by the Tekonsha Moraine and bound by glaciofluvial deposits. Glacial tills separate an upper and lower aquifer system throughout most of the area.
Degraded and tritiated ground water is present in the lower aquifer system. A negative correlation (-0.62) between tritium concentrations and depth is statistically significant (.04). In this local system, hydrochemical trends are characterized by decreases in sulfate percentages and increases in bicarbonate in the direction of ground-water flow. Statistical evaluation of the hydrochemical data …

Gps Measurements Of Regional Deformation In Southern California: Some Constraints On Performance, Timothy H. Dixon, G. Blewitt, K. Larson, D. Agnew, B. Hager, P. Kroger, L. Krumega, W. Strange
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Geodetic measurements are an important tool for understanding plate boundary zone deformation. They provide data on fault motion rates and indirectly provide constraints on crustal rheology, earthquake processes, and evolution of geologic structures. In southern California the pattern of strain resulting from interaction of the Pacific and North American plates is very complex, and a robust geodetic experiment requires dense spatial sampling. In addition, the signals of interest may have strain rates smaller than 10−7/yr. Taken together, these conditions imply the need for geodetic techniques that are both economical, enabling large numbers of measurements, and highly accurate. Conventional …
The Hydrogeology And Leachate Generation Of An Alum Sludge Lagoon Chesapeake Virginia, Charles M. Darling
The Hydrogeology And Leachate Generation Of An Alum Sludge Lagoon Chesapeake Virginia, Charles M. Darling
OES Theses and Dissertations
In 1986 the City of Chesapeake, Virginia began to dig shallow ponds ("lagoons") to contain alum sludge, a waste generated by the City from the process of treating potable water. Borings at the disposal site reveal that the near-surface geologic units include a thin mud-rich facies which overlies a thick sandy facies, both of which are in the Lynnhaven Member of the Tabb Formation. At 7 meters depth, a clay-rich facies of the Yorktown Formation (Morgarts Beach Member?) underlies the sandy water table aquifer. Water levels from twenty observation wells and two monitoring wells installed into the water table aquifer …
Potential Petroleum Reservoir Rocks Of North-Central Oregon, Alfred J. Riddle
Potential Petroleum Reservoir Rocks Of North-Central Oregon, Alfred J. Riddle
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Petroleum explorationists have commonly assumed, based on the presence of volcanic and/or volcaniclastic rock, that regions such as northcentral Oregon do not hold potential as petroleum basins. The typical argument has been that volcanic flows have no effective porosity or permeability and poorly sorted volcaniclastic sediments contain a high percentage of mineralogically unstable grains which are too easily and rapidly altered into clays and zeolites for any significant or effective porosity to be retained.
The objective of this study was to determine if potential petroleum reservoir rocks do exist in north-central Oregon. Through field and laboratory study and by comparing …
Distribution Of Sand Within Selected Littoral Cells Of The Pacific Northwest, Don Joseph Pettit
Distribution Of Sand Within Selected Littoral Cells Of The Pacific Northwest, Don Joseph Pettit
Dissertations and Theses
Beach sand acts as a buffer to wave energy, protecting the shoreline from erosion. Estimates of the quantity and distribution of beach sand in littoral cells of the PNW are critical to the understanding and prediction of shoreline erosion or accretion. This study was initiated in order to: 1) document the distribution of sand in littoral cells of the Pacific Northwest; 2) determine the factors which have brought about these present distributions; and 3) address the relationship of beach sand distribution to shoreline stability.
Gravity Maps, Models And Analysis Of The Greater Portland Area, Oregon, Paul T. Beeson
Gravity Maps, Models And Analysis Of The Greater Portland Area, Oregon, Paul T. Beeson
Dissertations and Theses
Growing concern over earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest has prompted the mapping and location of near surface faults in the Portland area, Oregon. Visible evidence of faults is poor, requiring the use of geophysical methods to assist in mapping and defining structures in the basin. Gravity maps and models may help in addressing this problem.
Two free-air gravity models were produced. The first model constructed from existing data crosses the basin from Petes Mountain northeast to the Columbia River. The second model is from a gravity survey along Forsythe Road near Clackamas Heights.
The line crossing the basin confirms previous …
Metal Mobilization From A Near-Shore Lake Sediment Under Simulated Acidic Groundwater Inputs, Raveendra V. Ika
Metal Mobilization From A Near-Shore Lake Sediment Under Simulated Acidic Groundwater Inputs, Raveendra V. Ika
OES Theses and Dissertations
Simulation of acidic groundwater passing through lake sediments was conducted under controlled conditions in a laboratory. Three sediment cores collected intact from the near-shore region of an acidic lake were subjected to simulated groundwater inputs of initially identical chemistry for a seven day period. Following this period water being used in the simulation for two of the sediment cores was acidified by hydrochloric acid (HC1) addition to examine the ability of these sediments to neutralize acidic groundwater with varying H+ concentration.
Simulated acidic water passing through the sediment cores mobilized significant amounts of metals. The sediment acted as a …
The Role Of Longshore Sediment Transport In The Loss Of Fill Material From An Estuarine Groin System, R. Neville Reynolds
The Role Of Longshore Sediment Transport In The Loss Of Fill Material From An Estuarine Groin System, R. Neville Reynolds
OES Theses and Dissertations
The influence of shoreline structures on longshore sediment transport and the evolution of a stable beach planform was investigated at Willoughby Spit, Virginia following the placement of 410,590 cubic meters of beach fill within a groin system. Shoreline changes and wave conditions in a single groin compartment, and the growth rate of a downdrift terminal spit were monitored during 1985 and 1986. Short term fluctuations in the shoreline position within the groin compartment suggested an episodic westerly movement of sediment through the groin system. Primary sediment moving events were associated with northerly winds which produced waves up to 50 cm …
