A Case For Site Acclimation In The Reintroduction Of The Endangered Razorback Sucker (Xyrauchen Texanus), United States Geological Survey
A Case For Site Acclimation In The Reintroduction Of The Endangered Razorback Sucker (Xyrauchen Texanus), United States Geological Survey
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Two site-acclimation studies (Mueller and Marsh 1998, Foster and Mueller 1999) were conducted in 1997 and 1998. The primary emphasis was habitat use and dispersal but we also examined if the rapid dispersal, typically associated with hatchery-produced razorback suckers (suckers), could be mitigated by allowing fish a period of time to recover from stocking-induced stress. Findings of those studies and existing physiological literature suggest that current stocking protocols may subject stocked fish to unnecessary behavioral or physiological stress that could impact performance and ultimately survival. This report presents those findings and recommends an evaluation of existing stocking procedures for the …
Description Of The Pelagic Zooplankton And Fish Communities Of Lakes Powell And Mead, United States Geological Survey
Description Of The Pelagic Zooplankton And Fish Communities Of Lakes Powell And Mead, United States Geological Survey
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Fishery biologists from Arizona, Nevada, and Utah have been faced with the imposing dilemma of monitoring the pelagic fishery of Lakes Powell and Mead. Standard sampling procedures typically used to monitor shoreline fisheries are simply inadequate for the deep volumes of pelagic habitat found in these two reservoirs. Nearly a decade ago, Arizona and Nevada biologists recommended that hydroacoustics be used to monitor these communities (Persons and Dreyer 1987a,b, NDOW 1994). However, for various reasons an acoustical monitoring program was never fully implemented. This study represents the first attempt to describe the pelagic fishery of either reservoir using acoustic technology.

Classification Of Explosives Transformation Products In Plant Tissue, Steven L. Larson, Robert P. Jones, Lynn Escalon, Don Parker
Classification Of Explosives Transformation Products In Plant Tissue, Steven L. Larson, Robert P. Jones, Lynn Escalon, Don Parker
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
Explosives contamination in surface or groundwater used for the irrigation of food crops and phytoremediation of explosives-contaminated soil or water using plant-assisted biodegradation have brought about concerns as to the fate of explosives in plants. Liquid scintillation counting, high-performance liquid chromatography, and gel permeation chromatography were utilized to characterize explosives (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine and trinitrotoluene) and their metabolites in plant tissues obtained from three separate studies. Analyzing tissues of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus), corn (Zea mays), lettuce (Lacuta sativa), tomato (Lyopersicum esculentum), radish (Raphanus sativus), and parrot feather (Myriophyllum aquaticum) …
Mercury Contamination From Hydraulic Placer-Gold Mining In The Dutch Flat Mining District, California, Michael P. Hunerlach, James J. Rytuba, Charles N. Alpers
Mercury Contamination From Hydraulic Placer-Gold Mining In The Dutch Flat Mining District, California, Michael P. Hunerlach, James J. Rytuba, Charles N. Alpers
United States Geological Survey: Publications
Mercury contamination at historic gold mining sites represents a potential risk to human health and the environment. Elemental mercury (quicksilver) was used extensively for the recovery of gold at both placer and hardrock mines throughout the western United States. In placer mine operations, loss of mercury during gold recovery was reported to be as high as 30 percent. In the Dutch Flat mining district located in the Sierra Nevada region of California, placer mines processed more than 100,000,000 cubic yards of gold-bearing gravel. The placer ore was washed through mercury-charged ground sluices and drainage tunnels from 1857 to about 1900, …

Areas Susceptible To Irrigation-Induced Selenium Contamination Of Water And Biota In The Western United States, Ralph L. Seiler, Joseph P. Skorupa, Lorri A. Peltz
United States Geological Survey: Publications
The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) studied contamination induced by irrigation drainage in 26 areas of the Western United States during 1986–95. Comprehensive compilation, synthesis, and evaluation of the data resulting from these studies were initiated by DOI in 1992. Soils and ground water in irrigated areas of the West can contain high concentrations of selenium because of (1) residual selenium from the soil’s parent rock beneath irrigated land; (2) selenium derived from rocks in mountains upland from irrigated land by erosion and transport along local drainages, and (3) selenium brought into the area in surface water imported for …
Predation Of Artificial Ground Nests On White-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies, Bruce W. Baker, Thomas R. Stanley, James A. Sedgwick
Predation Of Artificial Ground Nests On White-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies, Bruce W. Baker, Thomas R. Stanley, James A. Sedgwick
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Prairie dog (Cynomys spp.) colonies are unique to prairie and shrub-steppe landscapes. However, widespread eradication, habitat loss, and sylvatic plague (Yersinia pestis) have reduced their numbers by 98% since historical times. Birds associated with prairie dogs also are declining. Potential nest predators, such as coyotes (Canis latrans), swift foxes (Vulpes velox), and badgers (Taxidea taxus), may be attracted to colonies where a high concentration of prairie dogs serve as available prey. Increased abundance of small mammals, including prairie dogs, also may increase the risk of predation for birds nesting on colonies. …
Trace-Element Concentrations In Streambed Sediment Across The Conterminous United States, Karen Rice
Trace-Element Concentrations In Streambed Sediment Across The Conterminous United States, Karen Rice
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Trace-element concentrations in 541 streambed-sediment samples collected from 20 study areas across the conterminous United States were examined as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment Program of the U.S. Geological Survey. Sediment samples were sieved and the <63-μm fraction was retained for determination of total concentrations of trace elements. Aluminum, iron, titanium, and organic carbon were weakly or not at all correlated with the nine trace elements examined: arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, and zinc. Four different methods of accounting for background/ baseline concentrations were examined; however, normalization was not required because field sieving removed most of the background differences between samples. The sum of concentrations of trace elements characteristic of urban settings-copper, mercury, lead, and zinc-was well correlated with population density, nationwide. Median concentrations of seven trace elements (all nine examined except arsenic and selenium) were enriched in samples collected from urban settings relative to agricultural or forested settings. Forty-nine percent of the sites sampled in urban settings had concentrations of one or more trace elements that exceeded levels at which adverse biological effects could occur in aquatic biota.

Mafic Microgranular Enclaves In The Kozak Granodiorite, Western Anatolia, Cüneyt Akal, Cahi̇t Helvaci
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Enclaves which are relicts of initial basic magma give important information on the origin and evolution of granitic magmas. The mafic microgranular enclaves from the l-type Kozak pluton are less than 1 m that are located at the margin of pluton and mostly less than 15 cm and are generally in sharp contact with the surrounding granodiorite. In some cases, several enclaves may occur close to each other, but they are not closely clustered to form swarms. Most of the enclaves are ellipsoidal in shape. The largest enclaves are less ellipsoidal with curved boundaries. The mafic microgranular enclaves contain same …

Rock-Forming Nannofossils In Uppermost Jurassic-Lowercretaceous Rock Units Of Northwest Anatolia: Nannoconusand Its Resived Taxonomy, Sevi̇nç Özkan Altiner
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Nannoconids have been recorded in a rock-forming quantity in the uppermost Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous rock units in Northwest Anatolia, Turkey. Samples were collected from seventeen stratigraphic sections spanning the calciturbidities of the Yosunlukbayiri Formation and pelagic micrites of the Sogukçam Limestone. Because of rareness and difficulties for extracting of calcareous nannofossil species particularly zone markers in these type lithologies, nannoconids have particular attention in terms of biostratigraphy. Twenty nine species of nannoconids were recorded in the studied samples. Their taxonomy were revised and their stratigraphic ranges were given. The classification of genus Nannoconusis based on the gross morphology of the test, …

Geology Of The Dereiçi (Şavsat, Artvin) Cu-Pb-Zn Deposits, Mesut Soylu, Ayhan Erler
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The geological relationships between the rock units in the Dereiçi/Şavsat (Artvin) region and vein-type Cu-Pb-Zn deposits were presented in this paper. The study area comprises the Upper Cretaceous intermediate volcanic rocks and sedimentary rocks, with Post-Eocene dykes of andesitic and diabasic composition. The mineral deposits are classified as (1) Sphalerite-Galena-Chalcopyrite-Pyrite veins (Talatin Madeni, Binektasi and Fikrinin Madeni), (2) milky quartz-Chalcopyrite-Sphalerite-Galena-Pyrite veins and (3) Chalcopyrite-Pyrite veins. The general paragenetic sequence of the mineralizations is observed as quartz I-pyrite-chalcopyrite-sphalerite-galena-quartz II-chalcocite-covellite. The wall rocks are subjected to silicification, sericitic alteration, chloritization and carbonatization.

Along-Strike Discontinuity Of Active Normal Faults And Its Influence On Quaternary Travertine Deposition; Examples From Western Turkey, Zi̇yadi̇n Çakir
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Detail mapping of active fault zones bounding four travertine masses in the Gediz and Menderes grabens of western Turkey revealed that they are divided into geometric fault segments up to 13 km long. Fissures, supplying the carbonate-rich waters that give rise to the travertines are preferentially developed at the ends of the fault segments or in extensional step-over zones where the offset between the fault strands is about 1 km or more. The deposition of travertines in such structural settings is probably a consequence of the network of fissures supplying the carbonate-rich waters being highly interconnected where extensional strains were …

Available Resources Of The Fire Clay Coal In Part Of The Eastern Kentucky Coal Field, Stephen F. Greb, Gerald A. Weisenfluh, Robert E. Andrews, John K. Hiett, James C. Cobb, Richard E. Sergeant
Report of Investigations--KGS
Available resources for the Fire Clay coal were calculated for a 15-quadrangle area in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field. Original coal resources were estimated to be 1.8 billion tons (BT). Coal mined or lost in mining was estimated at 449 million tons (MT), leaving 1.3 BT of remaining Fire Clay resources in the study area. Of the remaining resources, 400 MT is restricted from mining, primarily because the coal is less than 28 in. thick, normally considered too thin to mine underground using present technology. The total coal available for mining in the study area is 911 MT, or 52 …

Zinc Mining Contamination And Sedimentation Rates Of Historical Overbank Deposits, Honey Creek Watershed, Southwest Missouri, Jason L. Carlson
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Sediment-associated contaminants released by past mining activities in the Tri-State Lead and Zinc District in southwest Missouri pose a long-term risk to water quality. This study uses sedimentological and geochemical analyses to describe the relationships between mine contaminant dispersal and historical sedimentation patterns of the Honey Creek watershed ( 176 km2) which drains the Aurora Sub-district along the eastern boundary of the Tri-State District. This watershed has been subjected to an intense period of Pb-Zn mining that began in 1886, peaked in 1916, and ended by 1930. The objectives of this study are to: (1) determine the magnitude and distribution …

The Arctic And Antarctic: An Integrated Curriculum Unit, Grades K-2, Institute For The Development Of Gifted Education, Ricks Center For Gifted Children, University Of Denver
Ricks Curriculum Units Series
An integrated curriculum is an instructional approach that connects the disciplines to an underlying theme or topic. Immersing students in an integrated-thematic unit provides the backdrop for experiences to occur across the disciplines. Shaping coursework around integrated themes is especially appropriate for gifted students, however using an integrated-thematic curriculum is appropriate for all learners as it develops students' abilities to make connections, to solve problems by looking at multiple perspectives, and to integrate information from different fields of experience. An integrated-thematic curriculum permits students to be active participants in their own learning as they design their own explorations and take …

Classification Of Torbanite And Cannel Coal. I. Insights From Petrographic Analysis Of Density Fractions., Zhiwen Han, Michael A. Kruge, John C. Crelling, David F. Bensley
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Torbanite and cannel coal are considered to be coals because of their low mineral content and overall physical morphology. However, the texture and composition of the organic matter in torbanite and cannel coal are similar to the kerogen occurring in oil shales and lacustrine source rocks. Therefore, understanding the nature and origin of organic components in torbanite and cannel coal is of significance in the study of kerogen and petroleum formation. In this research, a set of torbanites and cannel coals from different locations throughout the world were petrographically characterized and processed using a density gradient centrifugation (DGC) technique. Microscopically, …

A Biogeochemical Comparison Of Fossil (Carboniferous) And Modern Crustose Red Algae, Michael A. Kruge, John E. Utgaard, William Ferry
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The nature of the contribution of the various types of algae to sedimentary organic matter continues to be a topic of research interest. Crustose red algae have however received less attention than other types. The fossil calcareous red algae (Rhodophyta) analyzed in this study are two relatively unrecrystallized specimens of Parachaetetes (Family Solenoporacea) from the lower part of the Ste. Genevieve Formation (Carboniferous, Visean) in Union County, Illinois, USA. They occurred in the patch reef phase of a small carbonate mudmound-patchreef. The three modern specimens (collected and identified by F. Collier) are the crustose algae Lithothamnion, Clathromorphum and Phymatolithon …
Chemistry Of Maceral And Groundmass Density Fractions Of Torbanite And Cannel Coal, Zhiwen Han, Michael A. Kruge
Chemistry Of Maceral And Groundmass Density Fractions Of Torbanite And Cannel Coal, Zhiwen Han, Michael A. Kruge
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Microscopically, torbanite and cannel coal are composed of coarser macerals set in a fine-grained to amorphous groundmass. It is often assumed that the amorphous groundmass is genetically related to the distinct macerals. The separation of macerals and groundmass from 14 late Paleozoic torbanite, cannel, and humic coals permits the analysis of individual constituents using elemental analysis and flash pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Cluster and principal component analyses of the Py-GC/MS data further reveal the chemical similarities and differences between the various constituents. Pyrolyzates of Botryococcus-related alginites are characterized by an abundance of normal alkadienes, alkenes, and alkanes. Even their …

Classification Of Torbanite And Cannel Coal. Ii. Insights From Organic Geochemical And Multivariate Statistical Analysis, Zhiwen Han, Michael A. Kruge
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Petrographic and megascopic criteria have traditionally been used as the basis for the classification of torbanite and cannel coal. For this study, it was hypothesized that modern analytical organic geochemical and multivariate statistical techniques could provide an alternative approach. Towards this end, the demineralized residues of 14 torbanite (rich in Botryococcus-related alginite) and cannel (essentially, rich in organic groundmass and/or sporinite) coal samples were analyzed by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Cluster analysis performed on the Py-GC/MS data clearly distinguished the torbanite from the cannel coal, demonstrating a consistency between the chemical properties and the petrographic composition. All the torbanite …

Molecular Organic Geochemistry Of New York Bight Sediments. Sources Of Biogenic Organic Matter And Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Michael A. Kruge
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
As part of a multidisciplinary evaluation of the environmental impact of waste disposal in the New York Bight, a preliminary effort was undertaken to assess the molecular geochemistry of its sedimentary organic matter (OM). For this initial phase of the study, samples were taken from two New York Bight cores collected outside the area of known dumping [in Sandy Hook Bay, NJ], to establish the environmental context for future work on sediments from within dumpsite zones. The method employed was flash pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), which is an organic microanalysis technique suitable for solid samples, in this case dried, raw …

Major element and stable isotope chemistry of tourmaline from two complexly-zoned rare element pegmatites has been studied to gain insights into the processes by which the pegmatites were formed. Two locations in the Oxford Pegmatite Field of western Maine, U.S.A., were chosen for this study: Black Mountain, an isolated body located in sillimanite zone, highly sulfidic metapelites and quartzite; and Mount Mica, which is bounded by schists and pegmatite and aplitic granite bodies commonly having gradational contacts with each other. At each locality, tourmaline was sampled from the surrounding country rocks into the contact and wall zones through to the …

At the Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site (BHRS), we are characterizing the hydrogeophysical parameters of a cobble-and-sand, unconfined aquifer using a wide variety of geophysical methods. Our goal is to develop methods for mapping variations in permeability by combining non-invasive geophysical data with hydrologic measurements. We are using seismic, ground penetrating radar, and electrical methods in a variety of configurations to provide images of and parameter distributions at the BHRS. Issues such as resolution, depth of penetration, and the ability to image the desired parameters will help determine the most effective methods. Supporting data sets from the BHRS include core analyses …

A series of three-dimensional (3-D) ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data sets were acquired over the central wellfield area at the Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site (BHRS). The survey region is 30 m x 18 m and encompasses 13 wells. The goal of the surveys is to image the complex fluvial (cobble-and-sand) stratigraphy around the wellfield. These images will be used to construct 3-D models of the sedimentary architecture and to help constrain fine-scale models of hydrologic and geophysical parameters at the site. The data sets were acquired using 25 MHz, 50 MHz, 100 MHz and 200 MHz antennas. Depth of penetration ranges …

Abrupt Along-Strike Change In Tectonic Style: San Andreas Fault Zone, San Francisco Peninsula, Mary Lou Zoback, Robert C. Jachens, Jean A. Olson
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Seismicity and high-resolution aeromagnetic data are used to define an abrupt change from compressional to extensional tectonism within a 10- to 15-km-wide zone along the San Andreas fault on the San Francisco Peninsula and offshore from the Golden Gate. This 100-km-long section of the San Andreas fault includes the hypocenter of the Mw= 7.8 1906 San Francisco earthquake as well as the highest level of persistent microseismicity along that ~470-km-long rupture. We define two distinct zones of deformation along this stretch of the fault using well-constrained relocations of all post- 1969 earthquakes based a joint one-dimensional velocity/hypocenter inversion …
