Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Henderson County, Kentucky, E. Glynn Beck, David A. Williams, Daniel I. Carey
Map and Chart--KGS
This map is not intended to be used for selecting individual sites. Its purpose is to inform land-use planners, government officials, and the public in a general way about geologic bedrock conditions that affect the selection of sites for various purposes. The properties of thick soils may supercede those of the underlying bedrock and should be considered on a site-to-site basis. At any site, it is important to understand the characteristics of both the soils and the underlying rock.

A Boundary Element Method For Thermo-Poroelasticity With Applications In Rock Mechanics, Qiang Zhang
A Boundary Element Method For Thermo-Poroelasticity With Applications In Rock Mechanics, Qiang Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Coupled thermal and poromechanical processes play an important role in many geomechanics problems, such as borehole stability analysis and studies of initiation and propagation of hydraulic fractures. Thermal effects, as well as hydraulic effects, can greatly change the stresses and pore pressure fields around an underground opening. This is due to the fact that thermal loading induces a volumetric deformation because of thermal expansion/contraction of both the pore fluid and the rock solid. Volumetric expansion can result in significant pressurization of the pore fluid. In order to take into account the influence of temperature gradients on pore pressure and stresses, …
Implications Of X-Ray Emission From Lightning, Joseph R. Dwyer
Implications Of X-Ray Emission From Lightning, Joseph R. Dwyer
Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications
Dwyer et al. [2003, 2004a] recently reported measurements of bursts of x-rays, with energies up to ∼250 keV, originating from dart leaders and possibly the return strokes of rocket-triggered lightning. In this paper, these x-ray observations are compared with the relativistic runaway electron avalanche (RREA) model. It is found that for dart leaders the standard RREA model is inconsistent with the observed spectrum and flux of the x-ray emission. This result implies that the cold runaway electron model may be applicable to dart leaders. In this model, runaway electrons are directly accelerated out of the bulk electron population, produced by …
Nonlinear Guiding Center Theory Of Perpendicular Diffusion: General Properties And Comparison With Observation, John W. Bieber, William H. Matthaeus, Andreas Shalchi, Gang Qin
Nonlinear Guiding Center Theory Of Perpendicular Diffusion: General Properties And Comparison With Observation, John W. Bieber, William H. Matthaeus, Andreas Shalchi, Gang Qin
Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications
A nonlinear guiding center (NLGC) theory for diffusion of charged particles perpendicular to the mean magnetic field was recently proposed. Here, we draw attention to a number of attractive features of this theory: (1) The theory provides a natural mechanism to connect the perpendicular mean free path with the parallel mean free path. In fact, the parallel mean free path is the only particle property required to determine uniquely the perpendicular mean free path. (2) Under a broad range of conditions, the theory predicts that the perpendicular mean free path will be of order one percent or a few percent …
Stable Isotopic And Trace Metal Analyses Of Two Porites Lobata Colonies - Oahu, Hawaii: Implications For Past Seasonal Variation And Sea Surface Temperatures And Anthropogenic Effects On The Reef Environment, Jonathan Macdonald
Geology Theses and Dissertations
Corals from the western and equatorial Pacific Ocean have been extensively studied for the purposes of generating paleoclimate reconstructions spanning the last several hundred years. However, in the central subtropical North Pacific, there are currently few published coral records extending beyond 10 to 20 years. The hermatypic coral species Porites lobata and Porites lutea have proven to be useful indicators of paleoclimate and past sea surface conditions at other locations. Here I have analyzed two Porites lobata coral cores collected from colonies from opposite sides of Oahu, Hawaii to assess their utility for developing multi-decadal length climatic reconstructions in this …
Complexity Of Devonian K-Bentonites In The Appalachian Foreland Basin: Geochemical And Physical Evidence Supporting Multi-Layered K-Bentonite Horizons, Lucas Benedict
Geology Theses and Dissertations
Detailed analysis of Lower to Middle Devonian K-bentonites in the Appalachian Basin reveals physical and geochemical characteristics within supposed single eruptive event deposits that indicate a more complex depositional history is recorded in many of these volcanic beds. Variations in bedding showing multiple coarse and fine-grained layers within a K-bentonite layer can be seen in some Devonian K-bentonite beds. Microscopic irregularities show variations in the orientation of volcanic grains, and subtle phenocryst layers within a K-bentonite suggest changes in depositional environment where changing water and wave regimes rework and redeposit material on the sea floor. The presence of fossil layers …

Structural Analysis Of The Gonic Formation In Berwick, Maine, Joseph F. Renda
Geology Theses and Dissertations
RELATIONSHIP OF THE GONIC FORMATION AND NONSUCH RIVER FAULT TO THE NORUMBEGA FAULT ZONE IN BERWICK, MAINE
Located in southwestern Maine the Gonic Formation abuts the Nonesuch River Fault of the Norumbega Fault System. The rock types of the Gonic Fm. consist
predominantly of micaceous schist and lesser amounts of quartzite. Fieldwork suggests that the units have undergone transposition and thus appear to be
interlayered and pinch-out along strike. Granitoid rocks have also been observed and are interpreted as related to either the Lyman Pluton or White Mountain
Complex and serve as the backbone to the line of low-lying hills …

Road Salt Application And Its Effects On Sodium And Chloride Ion Concentrations In An Urban Stream Patroon Creek, Albany, Ny, Elizabeth K. Erickson
Geology Theses and Dissertations
The application of road salt in an urban watershed leads to increased sodium and chloride concentrations in surface water and groundwater, which can adversely affect aquatic ecosystems, and may have consequences for soil cation exchange. This study focuses on the spatial and temporal variations in sodium and chloride concentrations in Patroon Creek, Albany County, New York, a tributary of the Hudson River. For two years, weekly surface water samples were gathered from 7 sites along Patroon Creek for major ion concentrations as measured by ion chromatography. Additionally, a USGS gage on Patroon Creek measures specific conductivity, water temperature, stage, and …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Late Cenozoic evolution of the eastern Aegean is dominated by widespread continental extension. The most prominent structures are E-W- and NE-SW-trending grabens and intervening horsts, while NW-SE- and N-S-trending faults form the other less important structures. This paper documents the results of recent geological mapping and structural and stratigraphical analysis from the Halitpaşa half graben, which forms the northwestern continuation of the Gediz Graben. Field evidence for a new NW-SE-trending dextral wrench-dominated fault zone (here named the Halitpaşa transpression zone), which involved the thrusting of pre-Palaeogene basement onto Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene sediments, is presented. The fault zone is correlated …
The Problem Of The Core-Cover Boundary Of The Menderes Massif And An Emplacement Mechanism For Regionally Extensive Gneissic Granites, Western Anatolia (Turkey), Burhan Erdoğan, Tali̇p Güngör
The Problem Of The Core-Cover Boundary Of The Menderes Massif And An Emplacement Mechanism For Regionally Extensive Gneissic Granites, Western Anatolia (Turkey), Burhan Erdoğan, Tali̇p Güngör
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In previous studies, the stratigraphy of the Menderes Massif was divided into a Precambrian core and Mesozoic cover associations, the core consisting of gneissic granites and high-grade schists and the cover of mica schists and platform-type marbles. It has also been proposed that the two associations are separated by an unconformity although nowhere is this relation clearly observed. In this study, the Bafa and Kavaklıdere areas in the southern part of the massif have been examined. In the Bafa area, Mesozoic mica schists with marble lenses occur in the lowermost parts of the sequence and are overlain, along a gradational …

Trace- And Rare-Earth Element Geochemistry Of The Karalar (Gazipaşa-Antalya) Barite-Galena Deposits, Southern Turkey, Gülcan Bozkaya, Ahmet Gökçe
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Karalar barite-galena deposits are typical examples of carbonate-hosted barite-galena deposits that occur widely in the central Taurides. Recent mining activity has been concentrated in the Büyük and Boyalık mine areas. The mineralisation occurs as ore veins along fault zones and as ore-filled breccia zones along the strongly deformed lower walls of limestone blocks in the Permian limestones of the Bıçkıcı Formation. These veins contain mainly barite (80-85%) and galena (10-15%), and lesser amounts of sphalerite, pyrite, fahlore, limonite, quartz and calcite as gangue minerals. Barite developed during an early episode of mineralisation and was mylonitised before the precipitation of …

Characterization Of Ground-Water Quality, Upper Republican Natural Resources District,Nebraska, 1998 2001, Jill D. Frankforter, Daniele T. Chafin
United States Geological Survey: Publications
Nearly all rural inhabitants and livestock in the Upper Republican Natural Resources District (URNRD) in southwestern Nebraska use ground water that can be affected by elevated nitrate concentrations. The development of ground-water irrigation in this area has increased the vulnerability of ground water to the introduction of fertilizers and other agricultural chemicals. In 1998, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Upper Republican Natural Resources District, began a study to characterize the quality of ground water in the Upper Republican Natural Resources District area with respect to physical properties and concentrations of major ions, coliform bacteria, nitrate, and pesticides, …
Simulation Of Ground-Water Flow In The Cedar River Alluvial Aquifer Flow System, Cedar Rapids, Iowa Scientific
United States Geological Survey: Publications
The Cedar River alluvial aquifer is the primary source of municipal water in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, area. Since 1992, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the City of Cedar Rapids, has investigated the hydrogeology and water quality of the Cedar River alluvial aquifer. This report describes a detailed analysis of the ground-water flow system in the alluvial aquifer, particularly near well field areas.
The ground-water flow system in the Cedar Rapids area consists of two main components, the unconsolidated Quaternary deposits and the underlying carbonate bedrock that has a variable fracture density. Quaternary deposits consist of eolian sand, …

United States Geological Survey: Publications
Concentrations and mass loads of total mercury and methylmercury in streams draining abandoned mercury mines and near geothermal discharge in the Cache Creek Basin, California, were measured during a 17-month period from January 2000 through May 2001. Rainfall and runoff averages during the study period were lower than long-term averages. Mass loads of mercury and methylmercury from upstream sources to downstream receiving waters, such as San Francisco Bay, were generally the highest during or after winter rainfall events. During the study period, mass loads of mercury and methylmercury from geothermal sources tended to be greater than those from abandoned mining …

Geochemistry Of Mercury And Other Trace Elements In Fluvial Tailings Upstream Of Daguerre Point Dam, Yuba River, California, August 2001, Michael P. Hunerlach, Charles N. Alpers, Mark Marvin-Dipasquale, Howard E. Taylor, John F. De Wild
United States Geological Survey: Publications
This study was designed to characterize the particle-size distribution and the concentrations of total mercury (HgT), methylmercury (MeHg), and other constituents in sediments trapped behind Daguerre Point Dam, a 28-foot-high structure on the lower Yuba River in California. The results of the study will assist other agencies in evaluating potential environmental impacts from mobilization of sediments if Daguerre Point Dam is modified or removed to improve the passage of anadromous fish. Methylmercury is of particular concern owing to its toxicity and propensity to bioaccumulate. A limited amount of recent work on hydraulic and dredge tailings in other watersheds has indicated …

Report On The May-June 2002 Englebright Lake Deep Coring Campaign, Noah P. Snyder, Charles N. Alpers, Lorraine E. Flint, Jennifer A. Curtis, Margaret A. Hampton, Brian J. Haskell, Dennis L. Nielson
United States Geological Survey: Publications
This report describes the May-June 2002 Englebright Lake coring project. Englebright Lake is a 14-km-long reservoir on the Yuba River of northern California, impounded by Englebright Dam, which was completed in 1940. The sediments were cored to assess the current conditions in the reservoir as part of the California Bay-Delta Authority’s Upper Yuba River Studies Program. Sediment was collected using both hydraulic-piston and rotational coring equipment mounted on a floating drilling platform. Thirty boreholes were attempted at 7 sites spaced along the longitudinal axis of the reservoir. Complete sedimentary sections were recovered from 20 boreholes at 6 sites. In total, …
Mute Swans And Their Chesapeake Bay Habitats:Proceedings Of A Symposium, Matthew C. Perry
Mute Swans And Their Chesapeake Bay Habitats:Proceedings Of A Symposium, Matthew C. Perry
United States Geological Survey: Publications
The symposium “Mute Swans and their Chesapeake Bay Habitats,” held on June 7, 2001, provided a forum for biologists and managers to share research findings and management ideas concerning the exotic and invasive mute swan (Cygnus olor). This species has been increasing in population size and is considered by many to be a problem in regard to natural food resources in the Bay that are used by native waterfowl during the winter months. Other persons, however, feel that resource managers are attempting to create a problem to justify more killing of waterfowl by hunters. Some persons also believe …

Sources Of Ancient Maize Found In Chacoan Great Houses, Larry Benson
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Between the 9th and 12th centuries A.D., Chaco Canyon, located near the middle of the high-desert San Juan Basin of north-central New Mexico (fig. 1), was the focus of an unprecedented construction effort by pre-Columbian Native Americans. It has been estimated that from 2,000 to 6,000 people occupied Chaco Canyon during its heyday (Windes, 1984; Drager, 1976). One indication of Chaco’s regional importance is a network of roads that linked Chaco Canyon with other great houses and communities spread throughout a region covering at least 60,000 km2 (fig. 2). At the height of its cultural florescence in the 11th century, …
Mortality Of An Adult Cougar Due To A Forest Fire, Dorothy M. Fecske, Jonathan A. Jenks, Frederick D. Lindzey
Mortality Of An Adult Cougar Due To A Forest Fire, Dorothy M. Fecske, Jonathan A. Jenks, Frederick D. Lindzey
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Mortality from natural causes has been documented throughout the range of the cougar (Puma concolor), including California (Beier and Barrett 1993), Canada (Ross et al. 1995), Florida (Taylor et al. 2002), Idaho (Hornocker 1970), Nevada (Ashman et al. 1983), New Mexico (Logan and Sweanor 2001), and Utah (Gashwiler and Robinette 1957, Lindzey et al. 1988). Intraspecific killing by adult males is the most common cause of death in unhunted populations; adult males have killed kittens, subadults, and adults of both sexes (Beier and Barrett 1993, Maehr 1997, Logan and Sweanor 2001, Taylor et al. 2002). Other mortality factors …

Holocene Loess Deposition And Soil Formation As Competing Processes, Matanuska Valley, Southern Alaska, Daniel R. Muhs, John P. Mcgeehin, Jossh Beann, Eric Fisher
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Although loess–paleosol sequences are among the most important records of Quaternary climate change and past dust deposition cycles, few modern examples of such sedimentation systems have been studied. Stratigraphic studies and 22 new accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon ages from the Matanuska Valley in southern Alaska show that loess deposition there began sometime after ~6500 14C yr B.P. and has continued to the present. The silts are produced through grinding by the Matanuska and Knik glaciers, deposited as outwash, entrained by strong winds, and redeposited as loess. Over a downwind distance of ~40 km, loess thickness, sand content, and sand-pluscoarse- …
Stress-Induced, Time-Dependent Fracture Closure At Hydrothermal Conditions, N. M. Beeler, S. H. Hickman
Stress-Induced, Time-Dependent Fracture Closure At Hydrothermal Conditions, N. M. Beeler, S. H. Hickman
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Time-dependent closure of fractures in quartz was measured in situ at 22–530 °C temperature and 0.1–150 MPa water pressure. Unlike previous crack healing and rock permeability studies, in this study, fracture aperture is monitored directly and continuously using a windowed pressure vessel, a long-working-distance microscope, and reflectedlight interferometry. Thus the fracture volume and geometry can be measured as a function of time, temperature, and water pressure. Relatively uniform closure occurs rapidly at temperatures and pressures where quartz becomes significantly soluble in water. During closure the aperture is reduced by as much as 80% in a few hours. We infer that …

In Situ Stress, Fracture, And Fluid Flow Analysis In Well 38c-9: An Enhanced Geothermal System In The Coso Geothermal Field, Judith M. Sheridan, Stephen H. Hickman
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Geoscientists from the Coso Operating Company, EGI-Utah, GeoMechanics International, and the United States Geological Survey are cooperating in a multi-year study to develop an Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) in the Coso Geothermal Field. Key to the creation of an EGS is an understanding of the relationship among natural fracture distribution, fluid flow, and the ambient tectonic stresses that exist within the resource in order to design a hydraulic and thermal stimulation of an east-flank injection well, the first step in the creation of a heat exchanger at depth. Well datasets from the east flank of the Coso Geothermal Field are …

Stress Field Variations In The Swiss Alps And The Northern Alpine Foreland Derived From Inversion Of Fault Plane Solutions, Ulrike Kastrup, Mary Lou Zoback, Nicholas Deichmann, Keith Evans, Domenico Giardini, Andrew J. Michael
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
This study is devoted to a systematic analysis of the state of stress of the central European Alps and northern Alpine foreland in Switzerland based on focal mechanisms of 138 earthquakes with magnitudes between 1 and 5. The most robust feature of the results is that the azimuth of the minimum compressive stress, S3, is generally well constrained for all data subsets and always lies in the NE quadrant. However, within this quadrant, the orientation of S3 changes systematically both along the structural strike of the Alpine chain and across it. The variation in stress along the mountain …
