United States Geological Survey: Publications
The Nebraska Gap Analysis Project (NE-GAP) began in 1996 to assess the distribution and conservation status of biodiversity in the State under existing land ownership and management regimes. Our objectives were to (1) map land cover linked to dominant vegetation types; (2) map predicted distribution of terrestrial vertebrates; (3) document the representation of natural vegetation communities and animal species in areas managed for the long-term maintenance of biodiversity; and (4) make all information available to resource managers and land stewards in a readily accessible format.

Rethinking Early Earth Phosphorus Geochemistry, Matthew A. Pasek
Rethinking Early Earth Phosphorus Geochemistry, Matthew A. Pasek
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Phosphorus is a key biologic element, and a prebiotic pathway leading to its incorporation into biomolecules has been difficult to ascertain. Most potentially prebiotic phosphorylation reactions have relied on orthophosphate as the source of phosphorus. It is suggested here that the geochemistry of phosphorus on the early Earth was instead controlled by reduced oxidation state phosphorus compounds such as phosphite (HPO3 2−), which are more soluble and reactive than orthophosphates. This reduced oxidation state phosphorus originated from extraterrestrial material that fell during the heavy bombardment period or was produced during impacts, and persisted in the mildly reducing atmosphere. …

Temporal Variations In Physical And Chemical Features Of Cryoconite Holes On Canada Glacier, Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, Andrew G. Fountain, Thomas H. Nylen, Martyn Tranter, Elizabeth A. Bagshaw
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Cryoconite holes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys are ice-lidded, thus isolating the pools of water from the atmosphere and from potential surface melt. Hourly measurements of ice and water temperature and water electrical conductivity (EC) were recorded to broadly characterize the physical and chemical changes on daily to seasonal timescales. Overall, subsurface ice/water temperatures were typically several degrees warmer than air temperatures, underscoring the importance of subsurface solar heating. At no time was surface melt observed and the holes melted from within. Detailed differences in the timing and magnitude of both temperature and EC variations during melt-out and freezeup existed …

Oligocene Deep Water Export From The North Atlantic And The Development Of The Antarctic Circumpolar Current Examined With Neodymium Isotopes, Howie Scher, Ellen E. Martin
Faculty Publications
Neodymium (Nd) isotopes were measured on 181 samples of fossil fish teeth recovered from Oligocene toMiocene sections at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1090 (3700 m water depth) on Agulhas Ridge in the Atlanticsector of the Southern Ocean. A long-term decreasing trend toward less radiogenic Nd isotope compositionsdominates the record. This trend is interrupted by shifts toward more radiogenic compositions near the early/lateOligocene boundary and the Oligocene/Miocene boundary. Overall, eNd values at Agulhas Ridge are moreradiogenic than at other Atlantic locations, and are similar to those at Indian Ocean locations. The pattern ofvariability is remarkably similar to Nd isotope results from …

Exceptional Ground Accelerations And Velocities Caused By Earthquakes, John G. Anderson, James N. Brune
Publications (YM)
This project aims to understand the characteristics of the free-field strong-motion records that have yielded the 100 largest peak accelerations and the 100 largest peak velocities recorded to date. The peak is defined as the maximum magnitude of the acceleration or velocity vector during the strong shaking. This compilation includes 35 records with peak acceleration greater than gravity, and 41 records with peak velocities greater than 100 cm/s. The results represent an estimated 150,000 instrument-years of strong-motion recordings. The mean horizontal acceleration or velocity, as used for the NGA ground motion models, is typically 0.76 times the magnitude of this …

CGISS Publications and Presentations
We investigated surface-subsurface (hyporheic) exchange in two morphologically distinct arctic headwater streams experiencing warming (thawing) sub-channel conditions. Empirically parameterized and calibrated groundwater flow models were used to assess the influence of sub-channel thaw on hyporheic exchange. Average thaw depths were at least two-fold greater under the higher-energy, alluvial stream than under the lowenergy, peat-lined stream. Alluvial hyporheic exchange had shorter residence times and longer flowpaths that occurred across greater portions of the thawed sediments. For both reaches, the morphologic (longitudinal bed topography) and hydraulic conditions (surface and groundwater flow properties) set the potential for hyporheic flow. Simulations of deeper thaw, …

Manual Pumping Test Method For Characterizing The Productivity Of Drilled Wells Equipped With Rope Pumps, Essa L. Gross
Manual Pumping Test Method For Characterizing The Productivity Of Drilled Wells Equipped With Rope Pumps, Essa L. Gross
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Since the introduction of the rope-pump in Nicaragua in the 1990s, the dependence on wells in rural areas has grown steadily. However, little or no attention is paid to rope-pump well performance after installation. Due to financial restraints, groundwater resource monitoring using conventional testing methods is too costly and out of reach of rural municipalities. Nonetheless, there is widespread agreement that without a way to quantify the changes in well performance over time, prioritizing regulatory actions is impossible. A manual pumping test method is presented, which at a fraction of the cost of a conventional pumping test, measures the specific …

A Watershed Analysis Of Pattee Pond: Implications For Water Quality And Land Use Management, Problems In Environmental Science Course (Biology 493), Colby College, Colby Environmental Assessment Team, Colby College
Colby College Watershed Study: Pattee Pond (2008, 1992)
The Colby Environmental Assessment Team (CEAT) investigated the impact of land use patterns on the water quality of Pattee Pond in Winslow, Maine, during the summer and fall of 2008. Physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of water quality were analyzed to evaluate the current health of the lake. Data collected were compared with previous studies conducted by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and CEAT to examine changes in water quality and land use over time. Trends in Pattee Pond water quality suggest an improvement since the 1970s. However, the lake is still experiencing algal blooms resulting from phosphorus …

Geochemistry And Tectonic Environment Of Diverse Magma Generations Forming The Crustal Units Of The Kızıldağ (Hatay) Ophiolite, Southern Turkey, Utku Bağci, Osman Parlak, Volker Höck
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Kızıldağ (Hatay) ophiolite is one of the best preserved Neotethyan oceanic lithospheric remnants in southern Turkey. It is represented by, from bottom to top, mantle tectonites, ultramafic to mafic cumulates, isotropic gabbros, sheeted dike complex, plagiogranites and extrusives (low-K tholeiites and boninites). The ultramafic to mafic cumulate rocks are composed of dunite, wehrlite, olivine gabbro, olivine gabbronorite and gabbro. The crystallization order of cumulus phases, and the presence of highly magnesian olivines and pyroxenes as well as highly calcic plagioclases in the cumulates, indicate a subduction-related tectonic environment and suggest derivation from an island arc tholeiitic magma. The isotropic …

Late Cenozoic Sedimentary Evolution Of The Antalya Basin, Southern Turkey, Atti̇la Çi̇ner, Mustafa Karabiyikoğlu, Olivier Monod, Max Deynoux, Sevi̇m Tuzcu
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Late Cenozoic Antalya Basin developed unconformably on a foundered basement comprising Mesozoic autochthonous carbonate platform(s) overthrust by the Lycian Nappes, the Antalya Nappes and the Alanya Massif metamorphics within the Isparta Angle, southern Turkey. The present configuration of the basin consists of three distinct parts, referred herein as the Aksu, Köprüçay and Manavgat sub-basins, respectively, which are divided by the north-south-trending Kırkkavak Fault and the westward-verging Aksu Thrust. The Miocene fill of each sub-basin is characterized by thick accumulations of non-marine to marine clastics with locally developed coralgal reefs and reefal shelf carbonates. Based on lithostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic considerations, …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
High-resolution micropalaeontological examination of two cores recovered from the Central Basin of the Marmara Sea distinguishes seven biostratigraphical zones within pre-sapropelic (Pr1 & 2 zones), sapropelic (Sap1 & 2 zones) and post-sapropelic (Po1-2-3 zones) sediments. The pre-sapropelic sediments at the basal section of the cores reflect the lake stage of the Marmara Sea when it was isolated both from the Black and Mediterranean seas. First colonization of foraminifers at about 11-10.4 ky BP indicate the beginning of marine conditions following the entry of Mediterranean waters through the Çanakkale Strait. Sapropelic sediments deposited at about 10.3-6.2 ky BP were associated with …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Orduzu volcanics, which are part of the Yamadağ volcanics in the Malatya region, include rhyolite, rhyolitic dykes, trachyandesite and basaltic trachyandesitic dykes. Mafic globular occurrences within the basaltic trachyandesitic dykes, the existence of basaltic trachyandesite enclaves within the trachyandesite, and other textural and geochemical evidence all indicate magma mingling/mixing. Incremental ^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar dating on plagioclase from the rhyolite, from rhyolite dykes and basaltic trachyandesite yielded consistently 16 Ma (Middle Miocene). Primordial mantle-normalized spider diagrams of the rhyolite and rhyolitic dykes represent enrichments in some large ion lithophile elements (Cs, Rb, Ba, K, Th, U) but remarkably depletion in Sr, Nb, …

A First Record Of A Strike-Slip Basin In Western Anatolia And Its Tectonic Implication: The Cumaovası Basin, Bora Uzel, Hasan Sözbi̇li̇r
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Cumaovası basin, formerly known as the Çubukludağ Graben, is located at the western end of Gediz and Küçük Menderes grabens in the west Anatolian extensional province. It is 5-17-km wide and 35-km-long, NNE-SSW-trending, asymmetric basin that was formed under the control of strike-slip and oblique-slip normal faults. The basin contains two different infills that are separated by an angular unconformity: (1) an ancient basin fill consisting of Lower Miocene-Lower Pliocene sequences which accumulated in a fluvio-lacustrine depositional setting, and deformed by NE-SW-trending strike-slip faulting; and (2) a modern basin fill consisting of Plio-Quaternary units that are controlled by synchronous …
New Chemical Weathering Indices For Estimating The Mechanical Properties Of Rocks: A Case Study From The Kürtün Granodiorite, Ne Turkey, Şener Ceryan
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The chemical weathering of rock proceeds by water-rock interaction. During weathering geochemically mobile elements, alkali and alkali-earth elements are easily leached from rocks, leaving the residual elements to combine with components from the atmosphere to form new minerals. No single weathering index given in the literature fits the model of the process involved in chemical weathering outlined above. This study deals with the derivation of three new chemical weathering indices by taking both chemical processes such as leaching and new mineral formation into account. The new indices are chemical leaching index (CLI), chemical weathering product index (CWPI) and total chemical …

Timidonella? Primitiva N. Sp. (Foraminiferida) From The Middle Jurassic Of The Eastern Taurides (Southern Turkey): Remarks On Evolutionary Steps Of Hauraniids, Erkan Ekmekci̇, Demi̇r Altiner
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
A new species of complex benthic foraminifera, Timidonella? primitiva n.sp., has been identified from the Aalenian?-Bajocian of the eastern Taurides, Turkey. The new species, belonging to the family Hauraniidae SEPTFONTAINE, occurs in the lowermost beds of the Köroğlutepesi Formation and its test is composed of a planispirally coiled early stage followed by an uncoiled rectilinear portion. The internal structure is characterized by four different zones consisting of a subepidermal reticulate layer, a zone of subepidermal plates, a more internal empty zone in the chambers and a primitive interseptal pillar system in the most internal part of the chambers perforated by …
Water, Inertial Damping, And The Complex Shear Modulus, Paul Michaels
Water, Inertial Damping, And The Complex Shear Modulus, Paul Michaels
CGISS Publications and Presentations
The author proposes an alternative to the traditional representation of soil damping. Rather than using damping ratio, this author advocates using viscosity as the specific soil property, especially for saturated permeable soils. Thus represented, the imaginary part of the complex shear modulus will vary directly with frequency. The point is particularly relevant in cases where the water table may change, thus affecting the dynamic design of foundations or structures composed of soils.

Temperature is a primary physical and biogeochemical variable in aquatic systems. Field-based measurement of temperature at discrete sampling points has revealed temperature variability in fluvial systems, but traditional techniques do not readily allow for synoptic sampling schemes that can address temperature-related questions with broad, yet detailed, coverage. We present results of thermal infrared imaging at different stream discharge (base flow and peak flood) conditions using a handheld IR camera. Remotely sensed temperatures compare well with those measured with a digital thermometer. The thermal images show that periphyton, wood, and sandbars induce significant thermal heterogeneity during low stages. Moreover, the images …

In this study, we use an innovative, non-invasive technology, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI), to visualize the direction and magnitude of groundwater flow in field samples of late Pleistocene limestone of the Biscayne aquifer. Specific goals of the first set of NMRI experiments are to map the advective velocity of water flowing at two rates of specific discharge (0.00025 and 0.00013 m/s) through a 10-cm-diameter cylindrical, epoxy-resin model. The model interior accurately reproduces a well-connected maze of ichnologically influenced, centimeter-scale, touching-vug macroporosity common within preferred flow zones in parts of the Biscayne aquifer. A second set of NMRI experiments investigates …

Comparative Osteohistology Of Hyperelongate Neural Spines In Basal Synapsids (Vertebrata, Amniota): Growth And Mechanical Considerations, Adam Keith Huttenlocker
Theses Digitization Project
Basal synapsids comprise one of the best represented groups of early tetrapods and demonstrate a classic example of a macroevolutionary transition. The basal synapsid fossil record is of significant interest to paleontolists because it presents an excellent opportunity for studying the evolution of vertebrate morphology. In the present study, neural spine osteohistology is further examined across a broad range of basal synapsid genera with hyperlongate neural spines. Due to the limited availability of specimens and the comparative approach required for destructive analysis, the present study is divided into two major comparative investigations: analysis of hyperlongate neural spine in (1) Spenacodontidae …

Multi-spectral satellite data from the Advanced Spaceborn Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) were used to make interpretations regarding the surface lithology and structure of the Tariat, Egiin Dawaa, and Orhon regions in Central Mongolia. These areas experienced widespread Cenozoic volcanism. This study mapped the locations and extents of the volcanic flows, located cinder cones and faults evident in the areas, and identified a possible exposure of the Mongolian granitic batholith in the Orhon area. ER Mapper, a geospatial imaging software, was used to generate and run algorithms. Image transforms and supervised classifications were used …
