Biochar is a charcoal-like substance made by the pyrolysis of organic material from agricultural and forestry waste. While biochar is well documented for altering soil physicochemical conditions, few studies have investigated its possible effects on the management of arthropod pests. Tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) and fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda, FAW) are specialist and generalist insect herbivores respectively, that can cause significant defoliation in natural and agricultural ecosystems. In this study, we examined whether walnut shell biochar can affect growth and development of these herbivores. Specifically, we investigated how biochar influences parameters such as mass gain, length …

Classifying Detrital Zircon U-Pb Age Distributions Using Automated Machine Learning, Jack W. Fekete, Glenn R. Sharman, Xiao Huang
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The prodigious use of detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology for provenance studies in recent decades has led many researchers to amass extensive datasets (>100,000 dates). When displayed as age distributions, individual samples are traditionally compared using visual inspection and statistical methods, which can become timeconsuming and challenging when using large datasets. We propose that machine learning (ML) can more efficiently classify a sample by its source using detrital zircon U-Pb age distributions. Specifically, we hypothesize that automated machine learning (AutoML), which optimizes algorithm selection and hyperparameters, will outperform an unoptimized Random Forest (RF) classifier and the cross-correlation coefficient (R-2), a …

Revealing Watery Geologies: Softening The Mississippi River Bluffs In Saint Paul, Minnesota, Chloe Kahn
Masters Theses
How is a place shaped by the geologies beneath it? In Saint Paul, Minnesota, the geologic ground tells the story of the different forces and processes that shaped it through time, but in the most recent geologic period of the anthropocene, industrialization and urban development have covered up these stories. On the edge of downtown, where the city meets the Mississippi River, an eighty foot concrete wall replaces the natural form of the bluff shaped by glacial and riverine activity. This thesis peels back the anthropogenic materials we encounter every day and explores Saint Paul through deep time– exploring how …
Latah Formation: History And Case Studies, Kylee M. Woodworth
Latah Formation: History And Case Studies, Kylee M. Woodworth
2025 Symposium
The Latah Formation is a series of discontinuous sedimentary interbeds between the flows of the Columbia River Flood Basalts outcropping across northern Idaho and eastern Washington. Ages ranging between the Middle to Upper Miocene, the sediments represent varied fluvio-lacustrine environments. The deposits are predominantly composed of claystones and shales as alternating, laminated couplets, many containing a variety of fossils. Though the sediments may appear similar across localities, they come from different source rocks, ranging from ashes from Yellowstone hotspot to metamorphic rock from nearby hills. These ancient lacustrine and fluvial environments allowed for great preservation of fossils, often in great …

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic erupted on 15 January 2022, causing Lamb waves to propagate throughout the global troposphere. However, reports on volcanic eruptions–pressure fluctuations and water level dynamics are lacking. We quantified the propagation processes of Lamb waves induced by the Tonga volcanic eruption. Barometric pressure data collected at 1-min intervals at 485 meteorological stations in China showed that the eruption induced an atmospheric pressure event with an amplitude of ∼2 hPa over an hour and a wave speed of 295 m/s. Concomitant groundwater levels were available at 338 wells to find the barometric response to the volcanic event. The …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In this study, we present petrographical and microanalytical (EPMA, LA–ICP–MS) results of apatites associated with Fe–Ti±P mineralization in the XV deposit in the BSMP. Apatite is predominantly observed as subhedral to euhedral, homogeneous grains, with no zoning or inclusions. Geochemically, apatite is fluorapatite of magmatic origin, with Cl/OH and Cl/F ratios of <0.05 and 0.01 to 0.07, respectively. Apatites from XV and other IOA deposits in the BSMP display a high F/Cl ratio, which is likely the main characteristic of IOA–type deposits such as the Kiruna-type deposit. Apatites from both rock types (gabbro and pyroxenite) exhibit similar rare earth elements (REEs) and multitrace element patterns, indicative of a shared origin. The highly light rare earth elements (LREEs)–enriched pattern in chondrite–normalized fractionation trends, along with positive Eu and slight negative Ce anomalies, as well the high (La/Sm)N and (La/Yb)N ratios of XV apatite, further corroborates the magmatic genesis of fluorapatite. The Eu/Eu* and Ce/Ce* ratios in XV rocks imply a high oxidation condition, as well as other IOA deposits in BSMP. The sulfur content is less than 1 wt% and shows a positive correlation with SiO2, implying coupled dissolution–reprecipitation of primary fluorapatite. Considering the geological setting of XV and other IOA deposits in the BSMP, the parental magma(s) appear to have originated from oxidizing Fe-Ti±P-rich magma(s), likely formed within an extensional postcollisional setting, influenced by the Proto–Tethys and Central Iranian Microcontinent (CIMC) convergence events.

During the Silurian/Devonian (S/D) boundary interval, scyphocrinoids (Crinoidea, Echinodermata) flourished on a global scale. The first record of scyphocrinoids from Türkiye, especially represented by their bulbuous loboliths, is now described from the Halevikdere Section in the Eastern Taurides. The Devonian part of the section is more than 1300 m thick and covers a time span from the S/D boundary interval to the Late Devonian (Famennian). It consists mainly of fine-grained to sandy siliciclastics, event-driven conglomerates/fanglomerates and biogenic carbonates deposited in deep shelf to shallow-water coastal settings. The S/D boundary interval was measured and studied in great detail. The dominant lithology …

Classification-Based Point Cloud Denoising And 3d Reconstruction Of Roadways, Chen Denghong, Pang Ning, Nie Wen, Feng Juqiang, Kan Jiliang, Zhang Jinjing
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective The point cloud denoising and 3D reconstruction of roadways serve as a key step in the digital modeling and analysis of roadways. However, the conventional algorithm based on single filtering fails to effectively remove the noise at varying scales from point clouds. Meanwhile, the existing 3D reconstruction algorithms suffer from low modeling accuracy and high susceptibility to distortion. These necessitate developing methods and technologies to obtain high-quality point cloud data and construct high-accuracy 3D models for roadways. Methods This study proposed an adaptive classification-based point cloud denoising algorithm using neighborhood radius (R), minimum neighborhood point number ( …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Background Vertical shafts are typically employed in the deep mining areas of Jurassic coalfields in western China. However, the direct exposure of extremely thick Cretaceous aquifers frequently leads to significant water inflow in shafts. Meanwhile, the continuous sand-carrying water inflow and scouring in vertical shafts pose serious safety hazards to the overall quality of shaft walls. Methods In underground water exploration and discharge boreholes, water outlets are below the floors of aquifers to be drained. This allows unpowered water discharge. In other words, water can flow out naturally. By fully leveraging this advantage, combined with the favorable condition of spatial …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective Virtual models for excavation-supporting robot clusters targeting coal pillars between mining faces encounter challenges like a large data size and anomalies in data transmission, which lead to poor virtual-physical synchronization. This study proposed a method for efficient virtual-physical synchronization of the digital twin (DT) system of an excavation-supporting robot cluster using 3D model lightweighting and a trajectory prediction and correction model. Methods Fit-controlling vertices were defined, and their collapse cost factor was introduced to improve the quadratic error metric (QEM) algorithm and to constrain the lightweighting process of the 3D model of an assembly while maintaining fits between components. …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective and Methods Normal moveout (NMO) correction is a core step in seismic data processing. However, the conventional NMO correction method tends to cause wavelet stretching when processing wide-angle or large-offset seismic data, leading to degraded stacking quality and distorted amplitude variation with offset (AVO) attributes. Although the matching pursuit (MP)-NMO correction method can mitigate the stretching effect, it will cause lateral discontinuity due to overlapping seismic events. Therefore, this study developed an improved MP-NMO correction method based on multiparameter fitting. Specifically, during MP decomposition, cubic polynomial fitting was applied to the amplitude, frequencies, and phases of wavelets from the …

A Phase Transition-Induced Fracturing Permeability Enhancement Technology Using Carbon Dioxide Capsules For Low-Permeability Coal Seams And Its Application, Li Mao, Fan Xinchuan, Fu Hui
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective and Methods To address engineering challenges like high gas content, high pressure, and low drainage efficiency in the mining of low-permeability coal seams, this study developed a phase transition-induced fracturing and permeability enhancement technology using carbon dioxide (CO2) capsules for low-permeability coal seams. This technology leverages the feature that CO2 transitions into the supercritical state under high pressure. A capsule encapsulating critical CO2 is placed into a conduit, which is then placed within a coal seam. Subsequently, phase transition-induced blasting is triggered using a heating blasting start device. Consequently, liquid CO2 vaporizes rapidly and …
