Investigating The Impact Of Climate Change On Physical And Chemical Hydrology Of A Michigan Wetland, Emmalynn Boulton
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Wetlands support biodiversity, regulate water cycles, and sustain ecological health. Understanding their functions and the relative contributions of groundwater and precipitation are key to conserving these ecosystems effectively, especially under changing climate conditions. Fish Lake Environmental Education Center (FLEEC) is 240 acres of diverse, glacially-influenced wetlands located near Lapeer, Michigan. This site encompasses a bog consisting of sphagnum moss and peat underlain by clay, as well as many glacial kettles that form ephemeral vernal pools during periods of frequent precipitation. Previous studies have shown that groundwater flows from the north to the southeast, from the bog towards Fish Lake. The …

Data Repository For The Distribution Of Small Impact Craters Along The Msl Curiosity Rover Traverse In Gale Crater, Mars, Megan E. Hoffman
Earth and Planetary Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
The theoretical limit of the smallest impact crater diameter that can form under current martian atmospheric conditions is approximately 0.25 m, which is near the projected pixel size of the best orbital imagers around Mars. As a result, there have been limited studies into how the retention of the smallest impact craters on Mars varies with surface properties, since orbital images alone cannot confidently resolve them. Rovers and landers are needed to confidently differentiate and measure these smallest craters. Here we catalog small impact craters seen along the first 25 km, or 3120 sols of the Mars Curiosity rover traverse …

Southern Italy preserves a well-studied record of deformation and uplift related to migrating oblique collision, trench retreat, and tearing of subducted ocean slabs. However, the surface expression of these processes is incompletely understood due to a lack of reliable ages for marine terraces >200 m above sea level (masl). Here we use luminescence methods to date shallow marine sands from terraces ~ 100 to 1,000 masl in southern Calabria and interpolate the results with regional surface mapping. Burial ages overlap across the full range of sampled elevations with a weighted mean of 118.8 ± 8.7 thousand years before present (ka). …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Introduction
Many coastal wetlands are at high risk of degradation or loss due to sea‐level rise. Restoration techniques for maintaining coastal marshes are paramount, with thin‐layer placement (TLP) emerging as one feasible solution. Despite TLP's utilization, additional research is needed on species‐ and sediment‐specific responses.
Objectives
Our research combines greenhouse and field experimentation to test species and sediment composition responses aimed at maximizing vegetation while maintaining increased elevation.
Methods
The greenhouse experiment used two common marsh plants, Spartina alterniflora and Juncus roemarianus. Five centimeters of sediment (mud, sand, and sand/mud mix) was added, and subsequent sediment and vegetation metrics …

Groundwater discharge plays an important role in the hydrologic and ecologic functioning of rivers including sustaining streamflow and related habitat year-round. Simultaneously, groundwater supports the increasing demands of people as the global population continues to grow. Balancing the needs of users becomes increasingly important as climate change introduces greater uncertainty in water resources and fisheries, especially for economically important anadromous species that depend on freshwater resources. We investigated the seasonal and regional variability of groundwater contributions to six non-glacial mainstem salmon-bearing rivers in south-central Alaska. We hypothesized that groundwater contributes more than half of the annual streamflow, and nearly all …

The Cigalère Cave is a 21 km-long karstic cave located in the Ariège Department, in the French Pyrenees, and underlies directly the Bentaillou Pb-Zn-Fe sulfide ores. The cave hosts abundant gypsum mineralizations, some of them exhibiting various colorations including blue, yellow, purple, orange and black. Due to strict preservation policies, these colored mineralizations have not been studied much. Here we propose a non-destructive characterization of five distinct gypsum or carbonate speleothem structures from the Cigalère, exhibiting different colorations. To comply with the preservation policies, no sample was taken from the cave, and all speleothems were analyzed in situ using portable …

Shonkinites are rare alkali-rich igneous rocks found in the geological record from the Precambrian to the Eocene. This study investigates the Upper Cretaceous shonkinites from the Adel Hills Volcanic Field (AHVF), central Montana. The AHVF shonkinites are porphyritic with large, euhedral to subhedral phenocrysts of diopside that exhibit sector zoning. Other major mineral phases include plagioclase, sanidine, and secondary zeolites. Minor and accessory phases identified with SEM-EDS include magnetite, apatite, rare ilmenite and pyrite, and secondary calcite. Bulk rock SiO2 ranges from 47 to 49 wt% with Na2O + K2O varying from 5.50 to 7.34 wt% within that silica range. …
Permafrost Microtopography And Active Layer Hydrology In The Western Canadian Arctic, Tobias L. Leonhard
Permafrost Microtopography And Active Layer Hydrology In The Western Canadian Arctic, Tobias L. Leonhard
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The growing interest in Arctic regions will likely increase the use of nuclear energy in the Arctic. While this energy source has a high potential to improve economic opportunities in the Arctic, it also increases the release of radioactive material (radionuclides). Radionuclides are already found in the Arctic and are traced back to natural as well as anthropogenic sources. Water is one of the dominant transport vectors for solutes such as radionuclides or other contaminants. Therefore, improving our understanding of Arctic hydrology is important for assessing future environmental risks such as the release of radionuclides. Topographic and microtopographic features are …

Assessing Dissolved Organic Matter Sources And Dynamics In Urban Stormwater: Implications For Greenhouse Gases, Harper W. Schmalz
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Stormwater management ponds (SWMPs) are important aspects of land-use planning and increasingly recognized as active sites of biogeochemical processing that influence carbon cycling; however, little research has investigated the controls on dissolved organic and dissolved inorganic carbon (DOC and DIC) within these systems. This thesis examined the processing and transformations of dissolved carbon between three compartments to support the development of a greenhouse gas (GHG) box-model for urban stormwater ponds, including SWMP sediment, surface water, and vegetation. The objective of this thesis was to assess the biogeochemical processes that govern the rate and transformation of DOC and DIC between these …
Impacts Of Burn Severity On The Hydro-Physical, Chemical And Thermal Properties Of Sub-Arctic Peat, Joshua B. Meyer Mr
Impacts Of Burn Severity On The Hydro-Physical, Chemical And Thermal Properties Of Sub-Arctic Peat, Joshua B. Meyer Mr
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Under current climate change, summer season in the boreal regions of Canada is becoming increasingly warmer and drier. This shift is driving increases in the frequency and intensity of naturally occurring wildfires and allowing access to areas not normally susceptible to fire such as wetlands. In peatland areas, these increasingly large fires can create complex burn scars, which contain a wide variety of different burn severities across different landcover types. This variety calls for a greater understanding of how varying fire intensity affects the hydro physical, chemical, and thermal characteristics of boreal peat. This study aims to deepen that understanding …
Comparative Assessments Of Methane Flux Measurement Techniques In Serpentinite-Influenced Groundwater Wells, Madison J. Stetson
Comparative Assessments Of Methane Flux Measurement Techniques In Serpentinite-Influenced Groundwater Wells, Madison J. Stetson
Open Access Master's Theses
Methane (CH4) emissions from continental serpentinizing systems represent a significant component of Earth’s carbon cycling. Despite increasing recognition of serpentinite-hosted water-rock interactions as a source of trace gases, standardized field methodologies for quantifying trace gas flux from groundwater wells and similar subsurface conduits remain limited. This study addresses that gap by evaluating the reliability and replicability of three chamber-based sampling methods for measuring gas flux in serpentinite-hosted groundwater systems accessed by groundwater monitoring wells. Field measurements were conducted at the Coast Range Ophiolite Microbial Observatory (CROMO) within the McLaughlin Natural Reserve in Lower Lake, California, a site …

Barrier-beach and estuarine areas are important ecologically and economically, and the inlets connecting them are critical for ocean exchange and greatly dynamic. Man-made jetties are often installed to maintain the connection between ocean and estuary for navigation and water quality benefits. With storms and sea-level rise, coastal systems are changing over days to decades, affecting communities in New England and around the globe. This study utilized remotely sensed data (i.e., aerial imagery, lidar, and sonar) to examine the dynamics of the Charlestown Breachway and its flood-tide delta in southern Rhode Island, USA over varying times scales. The specific research objectives …

Preliminary Analysis Of Soil Volatile Organic Compounds As Soil Health Indicators, Thorne Taul
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Over the past decade, soil health (SH) has gained popularity due to the novelty of sustainable soil use related to human wellbeing. Soil health describes the overall quality of soil and its capacity to function over time. As interest in SH grows, researchers continue to explore new soil health indicators that can improve knowledge on how soil health is assessed and managed. Some indicators directly reflect soil health status, and some indirectly relate to processes and functions occurring within the soil. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are naturally occurring compounds that play a role in multiple soil processes. They are associated …

Deposition And Diagenesis Of Permo-Triassic Gypsum From Wyoming And Texas: Saline Lake And Groundwater Systems Of Equatorial Pangea, Maya Yamei Bradford
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Knowledge of gypsum textures and the processes that yield them is important for interpreting the history of environments, climates, and life on Earth. This is because gypsum textures are products of specific environmental, microbiological, and diagenetic processes, and because gypsum is relatively common in the Earth’s sedimentary record. Despite this significance, gypsum is relatively understudied. The fundamental goal of this dissertation is to advance our understanding of gypsum textures by presenting detailed, petrography-based investigations of Permo-Triassic gypsum from the continental interior of Pangea.
Gypsum is typical in the Permo-Triassic sedimentary record of tropical Pangea, where it is associated with red …

Slip Kinematics And Structural Analysis Of The Keweenaw Fault System From Lake Linden To Hancock, Michigan, Katherine M. Langfield
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The Keweenaw fault is a crustal-scale fault spatially associated with Mesoproterozoic rocks of the Midcontinent Rift System. Along the fault, older Portage Lake Volcanics have been thrust southeastward over younger Jacobsville sandstone. Ideas on the fault’s origin, from oldest to most recent, include that it is: (1) a reverse fault, (2) a normal fault formed during midcontinent rifting that was reactivated and inverted to a reverse fault during the Grenville orogeny, and (3) a detached thrust fault system initiated during the Grenville orogeny.
This thesis is based on a U.S. Geological Survey EdMap grant to remap a portion of the …

Microplastics are widely distributed in aquatic environments and have been detected in numerous organisms. Marine bivalves are among the most affected aquatic organisms by microplastics due to their filter-feeding behavior. In this study, 60 oysters were collected from two sites along the Texas Gulf Coast. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Nile red staining were used to detect microplastics in oyster (Crassostrea virginica) tissues. We compared field and laboratory samples collected after a two-week depuration period to identify differences in the shape and size of microplastics in oyster tissues. Results from the field sites showed a large number of microplastics, …
High Algal Biomass Is Decoupled From Metabolism In The Gallatin River, Cora Mae Steinbach
High Algal Biomass Is Decoupled From Metabolism In The Gallatin River, Cora Mae Steinbach
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Assessing eutrophication in rivers is difficult compared to lakes and coastal waters, because most algal biomass occurs on the riverbed and flows interact and co-vary with production (Biggs and Close, 1989; Bernhardt et al., 2018). Riverine eutrophication is typically assessed using algal biomass and water column nutrients (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2000), but biomass is highly variable and labor-intensive to measure, while nutrient concentrations often underestimate enrichment due to rapid biological uptake (Dodds and Smith, 2016). Reach-scale river metabolism can help evaluate long-term functional change in rivers recovering from nutrient enrichment (Arroita et al., 2019; Jankowski et al., 2021; Diamond …

It is well known that publications with collaborators from external institutions increase citations. This effect scales with spatial distance. There are also many barriers to long-distance collaborations, including linguistic differences, funding constraints, and the incremental costs of remote collaboration. This paper uses the Gulf of Mexico as a case study to examine long-distance research collaboration because it consists of three countries with diverse development levels and two prominent diplomatic languages, within a singular regional ecosystem of tremendous natural and economic value. This paper uses bibliometric network analysis to examine scientific research article co-authorship in the Gulf of Mexico from 2000 …

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
Collaboration is integral to understand, plan, coordinate, and implement management measures for fisheries that cross international borders. Regional Fishery Management Organizations (RFMOs) are the main arenas for countries to collaborate and make decisions for transboundary fisheries, but these organizations have generally failed to prevent the depletion of some of the world's most valuable fish stocks. It is unclear how the structure and functioning of RFMOs can improve collaborative performance to better manage transboundary fish stocks. Using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis, our study analyzes 10 RFMOs to identify the combination of six organizational conditions associated with high and low collaborative performance. …

Hydrothermal Vents In Sulfuric Acid Speleogenesis Karst: Isolated Feeders With Pristine Hypogenic Water Or Interconnected Conduits With Rapid Flow And Recycled Water?, Jakub Mareš, Marek Audy, Serban M. Sarbu, Jan Kukačka, Romeo Eftimi, Jiří Bruthans
International Journal of Speleology
Underwater connectivity and flow paths in the saturated zone of hypogenic sulfuric acid speleogenesis (SAS) karst remain unclear, despite sustained research over the past 30 years. Being regarded as sources of pristine H2S-charged water, narrow inflow conduits called "feeders" are typically considered primary sources of water and hotspots of speleogenesis. In southeastern Albania, there is a newly discovered active SAS karst system comprising numerous caves and springs. Tracer tests were conducted to investigate the connection of these caves to the surrounding springs and to characterize the flow paths. The results show that water flows from cave lakes to …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Background Coal-bearing basins contain primary and tectonically deformed coals due to multistage tectonic deformations. However, the gas-bearing properties of coal seams differ significantly due to varying pore and fracture densities, permeability, and mechanical properties. This makes coal structure assessment critical to coalbed methane (CBM) exploration and production. Objective and Method To enhance the accuracy and intelligence of coal structure identification, this study constructed a CNN-BiLSTM-Attention hybrid model that integrated a Bayesian optimization strategy. This model allowed for efficient fusion and representation of multi-scale log data by combining the local feature extraction capability of the convolutional neural network (CNN), the temporal …

Self-Adaptive Inverse Wavefield Transform And Derived Pseudo-Wavefield Characteristics Under Roadway-Borehole Observation Of Transient Electromagnetic Data, Fan Kerui, Guo Jianlei, Wang Ruoyu, Zhuang Ming, Fan Fangze, Xu Sheng, Zhao Wentao
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective To address the challenge of detecting aquifers outside the roadway excavation contour, this study combined the close-range detection via roadway-borehole transient electromagnetic (TEM) method with the wavefield transform. This will help simultaneously receive detection signals in front of the mining face and outside the roadway excavation contour while also highlighting the boundary information of aquifers. Moreover, to obtain a pseudo-wavefield featuring both reasonable kinematic characteristics and high sensitivity to changes in the electrical structures of strata, this study proposed a self-adaptive algorithm of inverse wavefield transform, thereby improving the accuracy and efficiency of the inverse wavefield transform of roadway-borehole …

Objective For coal mining areas in the middle reaches of the Yellow River basin, sealing mining-induced fractures via grouting serves as an effective approach to preventing water inrushes from coal seam roofs while also protecting groundwater resources. However, accurately identifying the migration paths of grouts remains a bottleneck for the further application of grouting modification technology to fractured rock masses. Methods This study investigated a coal mine threatened by both water inrushes from the coal seam roof and a short supply of water resources within the Jurassic coalfield in the middle reaches of the Yellow River basin, focusing on the …
