The Distribution Of Several Metals And Cation Exchange Capacity In Sediment Fractions From An Artificial And Natural Marsh, James River, Virginia, William Nivens Jul 1978

The Distribution Of Several Metals And Cation Exchange Capacity In Sediment Fractions From An Artificial And Natural Marsh, James River, Virginia, William Nivens

OES Theses and Dissertations

In order to examine the mechanisms by which Fe, Mn, Ca, Zn, Cu, Ni and Pb are bound in sediments, a sequential selective extraction procedure was employed on sediment samples collected at an experimental dredge disposal marsh and a neighboring natural marsh located near Windmill Point, James River, Va. The metal concentrations were determined in six phases, interstitial water, exchangeable, easily reducible (oxides of Mn), organic, moderately, reducible (oxides of Fe), and residual fractions. In addition, the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the sediments was determined as well as the actual role of organics and colloidal iron coatings as they …

Surficial Deposits And Geologic History, Northern Bear Lake Valley, Idaho, George C. Robertson Iii May 1978

Surficial Deposits And Geologic History, Northern Bear Lake Valley, Idaho, George C. Robertson Iii

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Detailed geologic mapping and subsurface study of late Pleistocene and Holocene sediments in northern Bear Lake Valley show at least four episodes of deposition of fluvial, marsh, bay, and lacustrine sediments. from oldest to youngest, these are the Ovid, Liberty, Wardboro, and Lifton episodes. These episodes are substantially different than those proposed by previous investigators. The informal term Bear Lake Formation is formally redefined here as the Bear Lake Group, and includes the newly defined Ovid Formation, Liberty Formation, Lanark Formation, and Rainbow Gravel. The overlying Wardboro Loess, also defined here, provides a probably age of 11,000 to 8,000 years …

Extreme Evapotranspiration By Irrigated Alfalfa: A Consequence Of The 1976 Midwestern Drought, Norman J. Rosenberg, Shashi B. Verma

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

The rate of evapotranspiration by irrigated alfalfa at Mead, NE (41°09'Nj 96°30'W, elevation 354 m) reached record levels in 1976. Evapotranspiration was measured with precision weighing lysimeters in a field 1.9 ha in size. Evapotranspiration ranged during the growing season from 4.75 to 14.22 mm day-l and exceeded 10 mm day-I on one-third of the days studied. On each day of study the ratio of latent heat flux density (LE) to the sum of the net radiation and soil heat flux densities (Rn+S) was such that LE/ (Rn+S) > 1, indicating the occurrence of significant …

Low-Cost Harvesting Systems For Intensive Utilization In Small-Stem Lodgepole Pine Stands, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1978

Low-Cost Harvesting Systems For Intensive Utilization In Small-Stem Lodgepole Pine Stands, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

The study reported here had two objectives: (1) examine the feasibility of using inexpensive skidding equipment in a small-stem lodgepole pine stand in western Montana, and (2) determine forest residues volumes (unused wood) resulting from different ground skidding methods and utilization standards. Preharvest volumes, volumes removed, residues left on the ground, and unusable material hauled from the site were determined for various utilization standards. The efficiency of skidding with a horse, small tractor, and small rubber-tired skidder were compared.

Predicting Slash Depth For Fire Modeling, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1978

Predicting Slash Depth For Fire Modeling, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

Slash or debris created by harvesting and thinning are a major fire management problem because these residues can create unacceptable fire behavior hazards. Treating slash to maintain an acceptable fire hazard is expensive and requires skillful decisionmaking. An inexpensive, simple-to-use, yet objective means of appraising the potential fire behavior of slash is added to aid decisions in managing slash. Knowledge of potential fire behavior can help determine treatment alternatives, the financing of slash treatment activities, and even determine whether the slash should be created. This report describes a method for predicting depth of slash fuels for analytical modeling of fire …

Converting Forest Residue To Structural Flakeboard - The Fingerling Concept, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1978

Converting Forest Residue To Structural Flakeboard - The Fingerling Concept, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

Structural-grade flakeboard experimentally manufactured from forest residues showed mean strengths above 5,500 psi and stiffness (MOE) above 600,000 psi. For economical transport, residues are chipped into "fingerlings" in the woods. Chipping rates are estimated at 50 tons per hour for large residues, and 15 tons per hour for small residues -- using different machines. Depending on the harvesting system selected, estimated costs of fingerlings delivered to the mill range from $25 to $33 per bone-dry ton for systems other than cable yarders.

A Hydrologic Model Of Aspen-Conifer Succession In The Western United States, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1978

A Hydrologic Model Of Aspen-Conifer Succession In The Western United States, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

Hydrologic impacts of grass-forb to aspen to conifer succession in the Rocky Mountain area are simulated by means of a fundamental model. Model algorithms representing hydrologic processes are sensitive to vegetational changes within the subalpine vegetation zone. Reductions in water yield are predicted as the vegetation on a small Utah watershed proceeds from a grass-forb type to aspen to conifers. Streamflow changes are largely attributable to an interaction between seasonal consumption for each vegetation type and the influence of vegetation type on snowpack. The model synthesizes present understanding and provides a framework for future watershed research.

Final Report Buffalo National River Ecosystems Part Iv, R. E. Babcock, E. E. Dale, R. L. Meyer, D. G. Parker, E. G. Smith, M. D. Springer

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Sampling point locations and analytical procedures remained unchanged from those outlined in previous Buffalo National River Ecosystem reports. The only significant change in analytical procedures was a reversion to the glass fiber filter method for collection and extraction of samples for chlorophyll analysis. This change was neeessitated by a need for filtering a larger volume to obtain enough chlorophyll for an accurate measurement. Samples were collected monthly from April 9 through December 30. No samples were taken in January or February due to the extremely uncertain traveling conditions caused by the frequent snows. Prior research indicates that the December 30 …

The foundation for the development of the Arkansas River was laid with the authorization of many upstream reservoirs in the comprehensive River and Harbor Act of 1946 signed by President Truman. Subsequent authorizations were forthcoming and work began on many of the bank stabilization facilities in 1950 and on the major structures in 1957. The current McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System was substantially completed in 1972. The authorized multiple-purpose plan for the Arkansas River and tributaries provided for the construction of coordinated developments in the interests of navigation, hydroelectric power, flood control, bank stabilization, and related benefits including recreation and …

Soil Salinity In Western Australia : A Summary, T C. Stoneman Jan 1978

Soil Salinity In Western Australia : A Summary, T C. Stoneman

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Soil salinity problems have long been recognised in Western Australia. The earliest published explanation in 1924 suggested that removing native vegetation increased stream salinity, and this basic cause has been confirmed by many studies since.

The Response Of Various Soil Strength Indices To Changing Water Content And Bulk Density, Larry G. Wells, O. Treesuwan

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Various soil strength parameters were measured in the laboratory using a bevameter and a recording soil cone penetrometer. Measurements were made at various levels of soil bulk density and water content. Results were discussed in terms of similar published analyses. Two dissimilar methods of predicting vehicular tractive performance were compared and evaluated in terms of potential utility with respect to prediction of soil trafficability.

Predicted And Measured Drainable Porosities For Field Soils, R. W. Skaggs, Larry G. Wells, S. R. Ghate Jan 1978

Predicted And Measured Drainable Porosities For Field Soils, R. W. Skaggs, Larry G. Wells, S. R. Ghate

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Experiments were conducted on large field cores to determine the relationship between drainage volume and water table depth for five soils. The measured drainage volumes were less than predicted from the soil water characteristics for three soils, but were in good agreement for the other two. Drainable porosities were calculated from both theoretical and experimental drainage volume-water table depth relationships by assuming that the unsaturated zone is essentially 'drained to equilibrium, with the water table. The experimental drainable porosities thus obtained were less than predicted.

Drainable porosities for drainage in two-dimensions were calculated from experimental results for one-dimension by assuming …

The Paleontology And Biostratigraphy Of The Lower Ordovician Gasconade Formation Of Missouri, Bruce L. Stinchcomb Jan 1978

The Paleontology And Biostratigraphy Of The Lower Ordovician Gasconade Formation Of Missouri, Bruce L. Stinchcomb

Doctoral Dissertations

"The biostratigraphy, paleoecology and paleontology of the Lower Ordovician Gasconade Formation in Missouri is reinvestigated in an attempt to solve problems that have arisen since the classic earlier studies by Ulrich, Bridge and others. Twelve faunal zones are established, many based on primitive mollusks which dominate the formation. The oldest of these, in the Van Buren Member, is the Hypseloaonus Zone. This is followed by a zone characterized by the primitive cephalopod Dakeoaeras then a zone dominated by the gastropod Sinuopea. These zones are succeeded by the Euomphalopsis, Matthevia and Ozarkina Zones which lie stratigraphically below the Cryptozoon Zone, …

Morphology And Anatomy Of The Norwood Esker, Ontario, John Arthur Dixon Jan 1978

Morphology And Anatomy Of The Norwood Esker, Ontario, John Arthur Dixon

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Over its 25 km. length the Norwood esker traverses two morphologically different areas, a northern section of kame, and a southern section of elongated drumlins. In the north the esker consists of single and multiple ridges: where multiple, the ridges are superimposed on a lower, broader, plateau-like base. In the south a high, steep-sided single ridge is present. In both areas, where single, the ridge splits locally into two narrower ridges which region a short distance downstream.

Internally, the esker contains mostly cross-laminated sands, tough-shaped and tabular sets of cross-bedded sands and gravel, and matrix-supported sandy gravels. The cross-laminated sands …

Landsat Image Analysis Of Linears And Lineaments In The Tri-State District, Missouri-Oklahoma-Kansas, Solomon Hartley Toweh

Masters Theses

"Lineations within the Tri-State mining district are classified as megalineaments, lineaments and linears, based on length. One megalineament, 120 lineaments and 205 linears are identified on the LANDSAT imagery. In order of importance a dominant northeast set, northwest set, north-south set and east-west set are recognized. These range from 0.8 miles (1.3 km) to 68 miles (109.4 km) in length.

Major lineation trends spatially relate with trends of mined areas In the Picher field both northeast and northwest lineations generally parallel mined areas. In the Galena field ore and lineations trend northeast while in the Joplin and Duenweg-Webb City-Oronogo field …

Sedimentology Of The Hannibal Formation In Northeastern Missouri And Western Illinois, Michael Harry Deming Jan 1978

Sedimentology Of The Hannibal Formation In Northeastern Missouri And Western Illinois, Michael Harry Deming

Masters Theses

"The Hannibal Formation (Kinderhookian) occurring in northeastern Missouri and western Illinois is a fine-grained, terrigenous, sedimentary unit which can be divided into an upper and a lower portion, based on lithology. The upper portion consists of alternating coarse and argillaceous, fine siltstone units, while the lower portion consists of a silty mudstone with an occasional thin siltstone unit. At the extreme western margin of the formation, near where the Hannibal almost pinches out, the formation consists entirely of a silty claystone. Extending southward along the study area, the coarse siltstone units of the upper Hannibal become thinner, and eventually pinch …
