Beyond Streamflow: Call For A National Data Repository Of Streamflow Presence For Streams And Rivers In The United States, Kendra E. Kaiser Jun 2021

Beyond Streamflow: Call For A National Data Repository Of Streamflow Presence For Streams And Rivers In The United States, Kendra E. Kaiser

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Observations of the presence or absence of surface water in streams are useful for characterizing streamflow permanence, which includes the frequency, duration, and spatial extent of surface flow in streams and rivers. Such data are particularly valuable for headwater streams, which comprise the vast majority of channel length in stream networks, are often non-perennial, and are frequently the most data deficient. Datasets of surface water presence exist across multiple data collection groups in the United States but are not well aligned for easy integration. Given the value of these data, a unified approach for organizing information on surface water presence …

Arsenic In Petroleum-Contaminated Groundwater Near Bemidji, Minnesota Is Predicted To Persist For Centuries, Brady A. Ziegler, G. H. Crystal Ng, I. M. Cozzarelli, A. J. Dunshee, M. E. Schreiber

Earth and Environmental Geosciences Faculty Research

We used a reactive transport model to investigate the cycling of geogenic arsenic (As) in a petroleum-contaminated aquifer. We simulated As mobilization and sequestration using surface complexation reactions with Fe(OH)3 during petroleum biodegradation coupled with Fe-reduction. Model results predict that dissolved As in the plume will exceed the U.S. and EU 10 µg/L drinking water standard for ~400 years. Non-volatile dissolved organic carbon (NVDOC) in the model promotes As mobilization by exerting oxygen demand, which maintains anoxic conditions in the aquifer. After NVDOC degrades, As re-associates with Fe(OH)3 as oxygenated conditions are reestablished. Over the 400-year simulation, As …

Four Decades Of Understanding Martian Geomorphology: Revisiting Baker's "The Geomorphology Of Mars", Anshuman Bhardwaj, Lydia Sam, Saeideh Gharehchahi Jun 2021

Four Decades Of Understanding Martian Geomorphology: Revisiting Baker's "The Geomorphology Of Mars", Anshuman Bhardwaj, Lydia Sam, Saeideh Gharehchahi

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Owing to multiple successful orbiter and rover missions in the past two and half decades, our understanding of the Martian atmosphere, terrain, and subsurface has continuously evolved. This prompts the need to revisit the first holistic review of Martian geomorphology based on useful images from Viking Mission orbiters, authored by Prof. Victor R. Baker. Several of the remote sensing-based interpretations and recommendations in Baker’s (1981) paper are as valid even today as they were four decades back. With an unprecedented focus on Mars exploration in the coming decades, it is important to briefly revisit the advances and prospects in Martian …

Precambrian Basement Influence On The Deposition Of The Upper Ordovician Utica Shale Play In East Central Ohio, William Kaleb Kirk Jun 2021

Precambrian Basement Influence On The Deposition Of The Upper Ordovician Utica Shale Play In East Central Ohio, William Kaleb Kirk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Ordovician Utica shale play is a major oil and gas producing interval in the Appalachian Basin. The Utica shale play can be found as far as New York and Canada and to the south into Indiana and Kentucky. The play consists of the Trenton/Lexington limestones, Point Pleasant Formation, and Utica shale. The shallow marine fossiliferous limestones of the Trenton and shallow marine shaley limestones of the Lexington are overlain by an interbedded shale and limestone of the Point Pleasant Formation, which grade into the deeper marine interbedded shales and limey shales of the Utica. These formations are highly heterogeneous, …

Upgrading Biogas Using Eburru Zeolitic Rocks And Other Adsorbent Materials To Remove Carbon Dioxide And Hydrogen Sulphide, James K Mbugua, Joseph M Mwaniki, Damaris M Nduta, Francis B Mwaura May 2021

Upgrading Biogas Using Eburru Zeolitic Rocks And Other Adsorbent Materials To Remove Carbon Dioxide And Hydrogen Sulphide, James K Mbugua, Joseph M Mwaniki, Damaris M Nduta, Francis B Mwaura

Tanzania Journal of Science

The trace amounts of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide in raw biogas lower its calorific value, cause corrosion and make it hard to compress biogas into the cylinder. Raw biogas was obtainedfrom anaerobic digestion of cow dung and market wastes. The gas was stored in tubes or urine bagbefore upgrading. Natural zeolite rocks, maize cobs, steel wire, desulphurizer, and worn-out tyreswere used as the upgrade materials. The composition of biogas was recorded before and afterupgrading using a GP180 portable biogas analyzer from Henan, China. The measured level of rawbiogas was 0.0227% H2S, >20% CO2 and 52-56% CH4. The most efficient upgrade …

Larvicidal Potency Of Dioscorea Sansibarensis Leaf Extract Against Vector Mosquitoes: Anopheles Gambiae S.S. And Culex Quinquefasciatus, Anitha Philbert May 2021

Larvicidal Potency Of Dioscorea Sansibarensis Leaf Extract Against Vector Mosquitoes: Anopheles Gambiae S.S. And Culex Quinquefasciatus, Anitha Philbert

Tanzania Journal of Science

Mosquitoes are responsible for transmission of illnesses of public health importance including malaria, lymphatic filariasis, dengue, chikungunya, and many other diseases caused by viruses. Vector control using synthetic insecticides has been the cornerstone for management of vector-borne diseases. However, the chemical based interventions have not been sustainable due to emergency of resistance against insecticides among disease vectors. Plant based mosquitocidal products can be potential alternative tools in vector control. Therefore, the present study aimed at exploring the larvicidal properties of Dioscorea sansibarensis leaf extract against malaria and lymphatic filariasis vectors; Anopheles gambiae s.s. and Culex quinquefasciatus. The larvicidal activities of …

Determination Of 40k, 226ra And 228ra Concentrations With Dose Rates In Crayfish From Ode Omi River And Radiological Implications To The Consumers, Olusegun Sowole, Qasim Abolanle Adeniji, Muyideen O Olagunju May 2021

Determination Of 40k, 226ra And 228ra Concentrations With Dose Rates In Crayfish From Ode Omi River And Radiological Implications To The Consumers, Olusegun Sowole, Qasim Abolanle Adeniji, Muyideen O Olagunju

Tanzania Journal of Science

Natural radionuclides such as 40K, 226Ra and 228Ra are found naturally in water and sediments of rivers, likewise in soils. They are transferred to aquatic animals through ingestion. Radioactivity concentrations and dose rates of 40K, 226Ra and 228Ra in crayfish species from Ode Omi River in coastal region, Ogun State Southwest of Nigeria were determined by gamma spectrometry using NaI (TI) detector coupled with a pre-amplifier base to a multiple channel analyzer (MCA). 15 samples of crayfish were collected. Cherax tenuimanus had the highest mean concentration and dose rate of values 106.87 ± 9.11 Bq kg–1 and 0.00960 mGy hr–1 …
