Study On Modification Of Plant Gum Flushing Fluid In Coal-Bearing Strata And Its Mechanism, Xie Chengchao, Wang Sheng, Yan Peng, Chen Liyi, Li Bingle, Zhang Jie

Coal Geology & Exploration

To improve the adverse effects of the depletion of plant gum resources on the application of flushing fluid in complex strata such as coal-bearing strata, a study was conducted on the compound and crosslinking modification of guar gum. A new type of plant gum flushing fluid (GXB) was developed using xanthan gum as the compound synergist and organic boron as the crosslinking modifier, with cross-linking control agent and inorganic treatment agent as the supplementary. Meanwhile, a series of performance evaluation was carried out. The evaluation results show that GXB has excellent performance and can meet the requirements of drilling in …

A New System For The Evaluation Of The Fermentation Quality Of Silages, E. Kaiser, K. Weiß Jun 2023

A New System For The Evaluation Of The Fermentation Quality Of Silages, E. Kaiser, K. Weiß

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Depending on the content of nitrate in green forage, the pattern of fermentation products in silages differ significantly (Weiß & Kaiser, 2001). The systems, which are now common in practice for evaluating the quality of silage fermentation, characterise fermentation quality incorrectly because the evaluation is influenced by the chemical composition of green forage. The aim of this work was to derive an evaluation system for fermentation quality, which is independent from the chemical composition of green forage.

Nutrient Composition Of Napier Grass (Pennisetum Purpureum) And Napier Grass Silages Made With Different Additives, A. A. Aganga, U. J. Omphile, J. C. Baitshotlhi Jun 2023

Nutrient Composition Of Napier Grass (Pennisetum Purpureum) And Napier Grass Silages Made With Different Additives, A. A. Aganga, U. J. Omphile, J. C. Baitshotlhi

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Forage contributes about 73% and 95% of the diets of ruminants fattened on grain supplements and on natural ranges respectively (Sarwar & Nisa, 1998). Napier grass is one of the highest yielding tropical forage grasses and was shown to provide a good quality silage when it was supplemented with molasses, as the fermentation quality was not affected by the high storage temperature (40oC). The objectives of this study were to determine the chemical composition of silages when ensiled alone or mixed with additives.

An Evaluation Of Grazing Value Of Maize And Companion Crops For Wintering Lactating Ewes, E. A. Van Zyl, C. S. Dannhauser Jun 2023

An Evaluation Of Grazing Value Of Maize And Companion Crops For Wintering Lactating Ewes, E. A. Van Zyl, C. S. Dannhauser

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Northwestern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), in South Africa, is well known for its sheep production from natural rangeland in summer (October to May). During winter, however, the nutritional value of the rangeland cannot maintain young growing sheep or pregnant and lactating ewes. With this in mind, Lyle (1991) suggested the use of planted pastures for the winter. Crichton et al (1998) and Esterhuizen & Niemand (1989) suggested the use of maize crop residues for both cattle and sheep during winter, whereas Moore (1997) evaluated grazing (not harvested) maize for this purpose. He found that the crude protein content of the crop was …

Study On Re-Growth And Nutritional Potentials Of Eleusine Indica L In Chitwan, Nepal, P. R. Regmi, Naba R. Devkota, M. Sapkota, M. P. Sharma Jun 2023

Study On Re-Growth And Nutritional Potentials Of Eleusine Indica L In Chitwan, Nepal, P. R. Regmi, Naba R. Devkota, M. Sapkota, M. P. Sharma

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The efforts to use exotic fodder species to solve the problem of green roughage scarcity in Nepal, have had only limited success because the species are not persistent. Use of local forage species, such as Eleusine indica, which is widely adapted and tolerant of repeated cutting (Lowry et al., 1992), could be possible solution to the problem. The objective of this study was to understand the re-growth potential of E. indica with respect to nitrogen fertiliser application and cutting management and to determine its feeding value in the dry season.

Tissue Damage And Nutritive Value Of Warm-Season Grasses Following A Freeze, S. W. Coleman, J. Breman, A. S. Blount, K. H. Quesenberry Jun 2023

Tissue Damage And Nutritive Value Of Warm-Season Grasses Following A Freeze, S. W. Coleman, J. Breman, A. S. Blount, K. H. Quesenberry

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) is a major forage for livestock in the subtropics of the U.S.A. However, it is subject to freeze damage with minimal winter regrowth, and is generally considered a poor grass for stockpiling due to poor quality of the residue. Bahiagrass genotypes have been found showing a range of leaf freezing tolerance in the in the field (-30 C) (Blount et al., 2001). Other C4 grasses have been reported to have genotype-specific tolerances to below-freezing temperatures ranging from -3 to -100 C (Sakai & Larcher, 1987). This research was begun to try to understand the …

Forage Production And Nitrogen Status In Mixed Fodder Crops, G. Convertini, M. Maiorana, D. Ferri Jun 2023

Forage Production And Nitrogen Status In Mixed Fodder Crops, G. Convertini, M. Maiorana, D. Ferri

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In Southern Italy, the lack of rain during the summer period is one of the main factors limiting fodder crop production. Another very important parameter, linked to drought, is N fertilisation. In these conditions, it is necessary to find mixtures of legumes and grasses able to ensure good production and quality in the driest months, and to rationalise N fertilisation through control of the nutritional status of the crops at the beginning of spring. By this approach, it is possible to adjust N application during the cropping cycle. The aim of this research was to evaluate in a hilly area …

Dry Matter Production And Nutritive Quality Of Wild Guinea Grass (Panicum Maximum) Grown Along Roadsides In Sri Lanka, Sujatha Premaratne, G. G. C. Premalal Jun 2023

Dry Matter Production And Nutritive Quality Of Wild Guinea Grass (Panicum Maximum) Grown Along Roadsides In Sri Lanka, Sujatha Premaratne, G. G. C. Premalal

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Wild Guinea grass (Panicum maximum) was introduced into Sri Lanka in the 1820s for forage purposes and has now naturalised in most ecological zones, ecosystems and habitats including roadsides with the exception of hilly and semi-arid parts of the country. The enormous distribution of the grass throughout the country has contributed much to supplying livestock feeds, soil erosion control, and improvement of soil fertility. The objective of this study was to investigate the growth, dry matter (DM) production and nutritive quality of wild Guinea grass along roadsides in different ecological zones.

Root Density In Panicum Maximum Cv. Tanzania Monoculture And In A Mixture With Leucaena Leucocephala With Different Densities In Mexico, H. J. Delgado Gómez, Luis Ramírez-Avilés, Juan C. Ku-Vera, J. Escamilla Bencomo, P. A. Velázquez Madrazo

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In Yucatan cattle production is limited by forage availability during the dry season. L. leucocephala has good nutritive value (24 - 30% CP) and can stand drought and grazing, therefore its use in mixture with grasses is recommended. However, in association both species could compete for light, water and nutrients. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of introduction of L. leucocephala with different densities on root density of P. maximum.

Red Clover In Monoculture Or In Association With Grasses?, A. De Vliegher, L. Carlier

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Sowing grass or clover under a cereal cover crop or after the harvest of the cereal is common practice, but there still are some questions about seed mixtures regarding monocultures or mixtures, especially when the fodder crop has to be productive for more than 2 years. In this experiment seed mixtures with clovers and grasses in a cereal cover situation were compared in terms of DM yield, energy and protein content and proportions of grass, clover and weeds.

Yield And Quality Of Annual Ryegrass Grown In Pure Stand And In Mixtures With Squarrosum Clover, M. E. V. L. Lourenço, P. M. M. Palma

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the importance of growing annual ryegrass in mixtures instead of ryegrass alone in order to reduce nitrogen application and thereby lowering production costs, and environmental pollution.

Black Medick - A Beneficial Companion Crop For Use In Organic Grass Production, R. Macháč, B. Cagaš Jun 2023

Black Medick - A Beneficial Companion Crop For Use In Organic Grass Production, R. Macháč, B. Cagaš

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Organic farmers must use only organically produced seed for establishing new meadows and for, renovation and undersowing of old pastures, in accordance with EC regulations. Therefore an important and difficult goal is to obtain enough seed of grasses without the use of pesticides and inorganic fertilisers. The seed yield is closely related to the number of fertile tillers, which depends on adequate nitrogen in the soil. Growing grasses for seed with a legume, as a companion crop, is one possibility for providing a source of organic nitrogen. Aamlid (1999) claimed that growing timothy together with white clover or alsike clover …

Seed Size And Its Relationship With Crop Establishment, Productivity And Nutritive Value In Genotypes Of Maize For Silage, C. Pérez, M. R. Tovar G., G. García, A. Carballo, G. Mendoza, T. Vásquez, F. González, M. Crosby Jun 2023

Seed Size And Its Relationship With Crop Establishment, Productivity And Nutritive Value In Genotypes Of Maize For Silage, C. Pérez, M. R. Tovar G., G. García, A. Carballo, G. Mendoza, T. Vásquez, F. González, M. Crosby

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

For a high dry matter (DM) yield of forage maize an adequate population of plants is required, which is related to germination, vigour, and seed size (Ellis, 1992). The objective of the present study was to investigate seed size and its relationship to establishment, productive and nutritional potential of silage maize, which has not before been reported in the literature.

Improvement Of Lucerne Cutting Management: The Relative Impact Of Initial Organic Reserves, Cutting Height And Residual Leaf Area On Forage Yield, J. C. Avice, F. Meuriot, M. L. Decau, A. Morvan-Bertrand, M. P. Prud'homme, F. Gastal, J-C. Simon, J. J. Volenec, A. Ourry Jun 2023

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Less lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) is now grown because of difficulties arising from 2 interacting characteristics: productivity and stand persistence. Optimisation of these two parameters depends highly of the cutting management (cutting height and/or frequency) and of the taproot N reserves. For example, Avice et al. (1997) showed that lucerne shoot regrowth is relates closely to taproot soluble protein concentrations (especially vegetative storage protein: VSP). However, it is not known how stubble C-N reserves and/or residual leaf area (both depending of the cutting management) influence the contribution of taproot reserve-derived C-N supply to regrowing lucerne shoots after defoliation. …

Integration Of Forage Production In Rice-Based Cropping Systems For Mitigating Forage Crisis Of Ruminant Livestock - Studies In Bangladesh, M. A. Akbar, M. S. U. Bhuiyan, M. S. Islam Jun 2023

Integration Of Forage Production In Rice-Based Cropping Systems For Mitigating Forage Crisis Of Ruminant Livestock - Studies In Bangladesh, M. A. Akbar, M. S. U. Bhuiyan, M. S. Islam

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Intensive rice cropping in Bangladesh is causing alarming shortages of forage and low ruminant productivity. This is also causing degeneration of soil fertility. Therefore it is imperative to identify some approach to integrate fodder production into rice cropping systems on rural farms. The integration of legume forage may improve soil fertility and soil structure, thus enhancing crop yield and may provide high quality feed for livestock (Haque 1992). Studies were done to investigate the effects of rice/forage integration on forage yield, soil fertility and also on milk yield of cows fed on the grown forages.

Canavalia Brasiliensis: A Multipurpose Legume For The Sub-Humid Tropics, A. Schmidt, M. Peters, A. Franco, R. Schultze-Kraft

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Canavalia brasiliensis Mart. ex Benth. ("Brazilian jackbean") is a weakly perennial, prostrate to twining herbaceous legume with a wide natural distribution in the New World tropics and subtropics. In comparison with C. ensiformis ("jackbean"), research reports on C. brasiliensis are scattered and restricted to studies done in Latin America. The species develops a dense and extensive, deep-reaching root system and subsequently tolerates a 5-6 month dry period. Based on studies that generally were done with only one genotype, it is adapted to a wide range of soils, including very acid, low-fertility soils. Its main use is as green manure, for …

The Effectiveness Of Nitrogen Rates On Winter Wheat And White Clover Bi-Cropping Grown For Silage, J. Sowiński Jun 2023

The Effectiveness Of Nitrogen Rates On Winter Wheat And White Clover Bi-Cropping Grown For Silage, J. Sowiński

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Whole-crop cereals harvested for silage cover c. 500,000 ha in Europe (Wilkins & Kirilov, 2003). Generally dry matter (DM) yield of small-grain cereals is lower than that of maize. In some investigations, DM yield (of high nutritional value) reached 15 t/ha (Balsdon et al. 1997; Clements et al. 1997). Whole-crop silage produced in a bi-cropping system offers more balanced forage compared to pure cereals and legumes. Nitrogen rates can be decreased with bi-cropping. The aim of this investigation was to compare nitrogen effectiveness using two methods of winter wheat cultivation: direct drilling into stubble and bi-cropping with …

Yield And Nutritive Value Of Heading And Headless Sorghum X Sudangrass Hybrids In Response To Cutting Frequency, J. K. Lee, H. S. Park, Y. C. Lim, S. Seo, B. H. Paek, J. H. Fike

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Summer annual forages contribute greatly toward solving the problem of roughage supply for cattle in Korea. These forages support high levels of dairy and beef production during hot summer months when the quality and production of perennial herbage decreases due to unfavourable climatic conditions (Olson, 1971). This study investigated the effects of cutting frequency on dry matter (DM) yield and nutritive value of heading versus headless varieties of sorghum x sudangrass hybrid.

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Native grasslands (NG) are the main feed supply of dual-purpose (DP) cows of the Mexican humid tropics. NG comprise about 85% of Paspalum, Axonopus and Cynodon species, about 5% of native legumes, mainly of Desmodium, and the remaining 10% are narrow and broad leafed weeds. Arachis pintoi (AP) is a persistent grazing tolerant tropical legume. In association with sown grasses, it has improved dry matter (DM) yield, nutritive quality of forage, and milk yield up to 9 kg/cow/day (González et al., 1996). The objective was to determine if productive performance of DP cows could be improved by …

The Dry Matter Yield And Nutritive Value Of Wet Tolerant Tropical Forage Legumes In Single Cropping Or Mixed Cropping With Gramineous Forage Crops In Drained Paddy Field, Manabu Tobisa, Y. Nakano, K. Okano, Masataka Shimojo, Yasuhisa Masuda

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In Japan the production of rice has been controlled since the 1970's and some parts of the paddy fields have been laid off for forage production. However, in poorly-drained fields or fields with high ground water table, forage species with high tolerance of wet conditions are required. The tropical forage legumes Aeschynomene americana cv. Glenn (Glenn) and Macroptilium lathyroides (L.) Urb. cv. Murray (phasey bean) have a high wet endurance (Bishop et al., 1985; Tobisa et al., 1999) and show high dry matter productivity (Skerman et al., 1988; Tobisa et al., 1999). The objective of this …

Desmanthus: A New Forage Legume To Improve Wool Growth In Tropical Australia, J. H. De A. Rangel, Carlos A. M. Gomide

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In tropical Australia, very short and erratic wet seasons are the critical factors in determining forage growth and animal production (Wheeler & Freer, 1986). Grasses are highly susceptible to low rainfall and animal production in such conditions become strictly seasonal. Improvements in meat and wool production by the introduction of stylo species (Stylosanthes sp.) into natural grasslands have been intensively reported (Gillard & Winter, 1984). However, there are currently no suitable introduced legumes for the c.28 million ha of Mitchell grass (Astrebla spp.) plains in heavy clay soils of western North Queensland, grazed predominately by wool producing Merino …

Recent Advances In Stylosanthes Research In Tropical America, Bela Grof, Celso D. Fernandes, Jaqueline R. Verzignassi

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The potential of neotropical savannas is very large for pasture-based livestock systems. There are 250 million ha of well-drained lowland savannas in the American tropics. Over 200 million ha are situated in the Cerrados region of Brazil. The Cerrados support 42% of the national herd. Although these ranges support large populations of livestock, productivity is generally low. Poor nutritive value of native pastures and monospecific swards of Brachiaria spp. is the principal cause of this low productivity, especially in the dry season when these grasslands often provide no more than 60% of the animal's maintenance requirements. The best option to …

Desmodium Velutinum: A High-Quality Shrub Legume For Acid Soils In The Tropics, R. Schultze-Kraft, M. Peters, N. Vivas, F. Parra, L. H. Franco

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Drought tolerant legume shrubs can enhance the sustainability of smallholder production systems in the tropics through the provision, year-round, of high-quality feed and through their positive effect on soil. Desmodium velutinum (Willd.) DC. is one of the few shrub species that have been identified as (1) well adapted to acid tropical soils and (2) of good nutritive value (Schultze-Kraft, 1996). It is a perennial native to SE Asia and tropical Africa growing up to 3 m high, the velutinous (velvety) surfaces of its 1-foliolate leaves being a characteristic feature. It grows well on soils ranging from pH 4.0 to alkaline, …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Grasses and tree leaves/shrubs are the major feeds available from grasslands and grazing fields. There is though a dearth of information on the nutritional value of tree foliage although available information was collated by Shelton et al. (1995). This study evaluated the relative nutritive value of two foliages for goats.

Ensiling Characteristics And Nutritive Value Of Browse/Maize Forage Mixtures, F. B. Bareeba, H. Kato, Elly N. Sabiiti

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The practice of growing fodder tree and shrubs is being advocated for and adopted in smallholder dairy production systems. In Uganda, Calliandra calothyrsus, Gliricidia sepium, and Leucaena leucocephala have been identified and recommended as the most suitable species (Sabiiti, 2001). However tree foliage contains toxic compounds (Lowry, 1990), which may be alleviated by ensiling. The objective of the experiment was to study the ensiling characteristics of browse/ maize forage mixtures and their nutritive value when fed to lactating dairy cows.

The Effect Of Fermentation Of Calliandra Calothyrsus, Gliricidia Sepium, Leucaena Leucocephala And Maize Forage On Rumen Degradation And Microbial Protein Synthesis, H. Kato, F. B. Bareeba, Elly N. Sabiiti, C. Ebong

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Ensiling as a means of storing green fodder by acidification has a profound effect on the chemical composition of the resultant silage. Ensiling could therefore, ameliorate the effects of anti-nutritional factors associated with browses. The objective of the experiment was to determine fermentation characteristics and rumen degradation (D) of ensiled Calliandra calothyrsus (C), Gliricidia sepium (G), Leucaena leucocephala (L) and maize forage.

The Effects Of Exposure To Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue Seed On Faecal And Urine Concentrations Of Ergovaline And Lysergic Acid In Mature Gelding Horses, C. L. Schultz, S. L. Lodge-Ivey, A. M. Craig, James R. Strickland, L. P. Bush Jun 2023

P. Bush

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Despite the good nutritive value of endophyte-infected tall fescue, consumption by livestock results in a decrease in both reproductive and growth performance due to ergot alkaloids produced by an endophytic fungus (Cross et al., 1995). Little research has investigated the metabolic fate of ergot alkaloids and/or their metabolites in grazing horses. Thus, the objectives of this experiment were: a) to determine concentrations of ergovaline (EV) and lysergic acid (LA) in the faeces and urine of geldings exposed to tall fescue seed over a time course experiment and b) to measure the effects of alkaloid-containing tall fescue on nutrient digestibility …

Stylos: The Broad Acre Legumes Of N Australian Grazing Systems, John P. Rains Jun 2023

Stylos: The Broad Acre Legumes Of N Australian Grazing Systems, John P. Rains

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Early accidental introduction of Stylosanthes humilis into the N Australian savannas in the early 20th century and its contrived spread by the late 1960s led to the release of more perennial types. Townsville Stylo, as it was known, colonised large areas and had reached its climatic and agronomic limits by the 1970s. It had a major impact on beef production in areas where natural carrying capacities were relatively low. The precedent of Townsville Stylo directed attention to the genus Stylosanthes. This impact continued until 1974 when anthracnose virtually wiped it out. Fortunately 2 other Stylosanthes species, S. hamata cv. Verano …

Leucaena In Northern Australia: A Forage Tree Legume Success Story, B. F. Mullen, H. M. Shelton, Scott A. Dalzell

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Leucaena leucocephala (leucaena) is a long-lived, perennial forage tree legume of very high nutritive value for ruminant production. In northern Australia, leucaena is direct seeded into hedgerows 5-10m apart, with grass species such as buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) planted in the inter-row to form a highly productive and sustainable grass-legume pasture that cattle graze directly. It generally is grown on deep, fertile soils in sub-humid environments with average rainfall of 600-800mm/year. Steer gains of 275-300kg/head per year are achieved, with short-term daily gains over the main growing season > 1kg/head. Being very deep-rooted, leucaena exploits moisture beyond the reach …
