The Keller Plan In College Introductory Physical Geology : A Comparison With The Conventional Teaching Method, Robert G. Walsh Sr. Jan 1975

The Keller Plan In College Introductory Physical Geology : A Comparison With The Conventional Teaching Method, Robert G. Walsh Sr.

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to compare the learning and attitudinal changes that took place in a college introductory physical geology class between a self-paced method of instruction called the Keller Plan and the conventional lecture-laboratory method.

The sample population was 56 students enrolled in Earth Science 120, an introductory physical geology course at Minot State College ·~ during the fall quarter, 1973. An experimental section of 20 students experienced the Keller Plan treatment and two control groups consisting of 18 students each received the conventional method of instruction.

Four specific areas of investigation were tested: (1) knowledge of …

Occurrence Of The Puma, Felis Concolor, From Svendsen Cave, Marion County, Arkansas, William L. Puckette

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A partial skeleton including fragmental skull and mandibles of the puma, Felis concolor, was recovered from Svendsen Cave, Marion County, Arkansas. The remains are thought to be of Late Pleistocene (Wisconsin) or Sub-recent age. Fossil records of the puma are rare and only one other Pleistocene or Sub-recent site in Arkansas, Conard Fissure, has yielded remains which could be assigned to this large felid.

A Population Study Of The Cave Beetle Ptomaphagus Loedingi (Coleoptera; Leiodidae; Catopinae), Stewart B. Peck

International Journal of Speleology

Baited pitfall traps were used in Barclay Cave, Alabama, in 1965 to study a blind Ptomaphagus beetle population. A 40m2 area in the cave yielded 95% of the 897 adult and larval beetles trapped in the cave at 9 stations. This represented a population density of about 13 beetles/m2. Tests of different baits showed decayed meat to be the most attractive. Adults were most abundant in mid-August when substrate conditions were moist, were reproductively active, and were not newly emerged from pupal cells. Larvae were most abundant in late August. The population was studied by mark-recapture methods …

Studies On The Niche Separation In Two Carabid Cave Beetles, Tom Mckinney

International Journal of Speleology

Population, habitat and behavioural studies carried out on Pseudanophthalmus menetriesi and P. pubescens in the south central Kentucky karst area are described and discussed. Differences which exist in the timing of population recruitment, habitat preference, habitat niche breadth and in the degree of agression are all important in lessening competition between these two species.

The Invertebrate Fauna Of Tropical American Caves, Part Iii: Jamaica, An Introduction, Stewart B. Peck Jan 1975

The Invertebrate Fauna Of Tropical American Caves, Part Iii: Jamaica, An Introduction, Stewart B. Peck

International Journal of Speleology

The scattered literature on the physical speleology and biospeleology of the West Indian island of Jamaica is brought together. As a result of recent field work, a summary of the Jamaican vertebrate and invertebrate caves is given. The invertebrate fauna is known to include some 150 free-living macroscopic species. These are mostly troglophilic scavengers and predators associated with guano accumulations. However, some 25 species, mostly terrestrial and undescribed, are known to be troglobites. This is one of the largest known assemblages of tropical troglobites. Brief descriptions are given for the 54 cave sites which have been biologically studied.

Three New Troglobitic Asellids From Western North America (Crustaces: Isopoda: Asellidae), Thomas E. Bowman

International Journal of Speleology

Fleming’s arguments (1973) for reducing Conasellus to a synonym of Asellus are considered inadequate, but the name Conasellus is replaced by its senior synonym Caecidotea. Two new troglobitic species of Caecidotea are described, C. chiapas from caves in Chiapas, Mexico, and C. sequoiae from Liburn Cave, Tulare County, California. Asellus califomicus is reported from springs in Napa and Santa Clara Counties; the male pleopod 2 is redescribed, and the species is assigned to the subgenus Phreatoasellus. A new genus and species, Salmasellus steganothrix, is described from Horseshoe Lake, Alberta, Canada.

Petrography Of Precambrian Iron Formation, Pembina County, North Dakota, Ronald E. Richardson

Theses and Dissertations

In October of 1964 the Topographic Branch of the United States Geological Survey reported difficulties in using magnetic compasses while mapping in the areas of Akra and Hensel, Pembina County, North Dakota. University of North Dakota geologists located anomalies of 67,500 gammas 1.6 lon east of Akra and 71,500 gammas 4 km east of Hensel, the normal magnetic field in this area being about 60,000 gammas. The rock bodies producing the magnetic anomalies were drilled and examination of diamond drill core showed them to consist of oxide and silicate facies iron formation interlayered with quartz-biotite schist of Precambrian age. The …

1975 Weed Control In Lupin Investigations, J M. Allen

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

1. The results with pre emergence herbicides confirm previous recommendations of simazine 1.25 kg/ha on heavy soil and diuron 1.25 kg/ha on light soils with the following modification. a) Simazine rates need to be increased to 3 kg/ha on very early (April) sovm crops in southern areas. b) Simazine has not damaged lupins in southern areas and where ryegrass is a major problem on sandy soils (i.e. Esperance) it is likely to give better responses than diuron. 2. As suspected in previous years simazine can by way of effective weed control produce a marked lupin vegetative response without any increase …

1975 South West Sub.Clover Root Rot - 1975 Cultivation Experiments, M J. Barbetti, G C. Macnish

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trials were established in 1975 in the South West of WA to investigate the effect of time of cultivation, and nitrogen application, upon the incidence and severity of both tap and lateral root rot subterranean clover. Nitrogen application had little in the way of consistent effects. Cultivation reduced the levels of both tap and lateral root rot in many instances. These effects were most obvious and consistent at about the end of May. Cultivation just prior to or just after the break of season were the best cultivation treatments. Cultivation does appear to show some promise as a means of …

1975 Drought Responses Of Wheat Cultivars - Environment Responses Of Subterranean Clover., R N. Weir

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Environment responses of subterranean clover. Aim - To clarify the responses of four cultivars to temperature, vernalisation and photoperiod. Method - Dinninup, Midland B, Geraldton and Blackwood sub clover was grown in phytotron cabinets under 14 hour and 10 hour photoperiods and temperatures 10°c day/5°c night, l5/l0°c, 20/l5°C, 25/20°c. A seed vernalisation treatment of 6 weeks refrigeration of swelled seed was included. Dissections were made to observe first floral initiation and first flower production was noted. Conclusions - Higher temperatures either had no effect or delayed floral initiation, but accelerated flower development greatly from initiation to anthesis. Photoperiod and vernalisation …

A Geochemical And Microscopic Study Of A Recently Discovered Deposit In Southern Illinois Fluorspar District., Prachon Chareonsri Jan 1975

A Geochemical And Microscopic Study Of A Recently Discovered Deposit In Southern Illinois Fluorspar District., Prachon Chareonsri

Masters Theses

"A bedding-replacement fluorite deposit, discovered by recent drilling in the northeast part of the Cave in Rock district, southern Illinois, has been studied by a combination of geochemical, X-ray, and microscopic techniques. The dispersion pattern for trace zinc, lead, cadmium and copper concentrations in carbonate host rocks adjacent to the fluorspar deposit, determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, appears to hold only little hope in serving as an aid to exploration. Only cadmium anomalies appear closely related to the known fluorspar ore, and those values are not greatly above background.

Broad zinc and cadmium anomalies and a narrow lead anomaly are …

A Comparison Between Direct Waves And Head Waves In A Seismic Refraction Profile., Nelson Jose Aboud Garcia Jan 1975

A Comparison Between Direct Waves And Head Waves In A Seismic Refraction Profile., Nelson Jose Aboud Garcia

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to experimentally verify the theoretical prediction that the particle velocity of a head wave is the time integral of the particle velocity of a direct wave.

The procedure was to use small explosions in the field to generate direct waves and head waves in a surface layer of low compressional velocity overlying a higher velocity medium. The direct waves were distinguished by the ratio of frequencies and by the slopes in a time distance plot.

The result of comparing the particle velocity of the head waves with the integral of the particle velocity of …

The Geochemistry And Origin Of Volcanic Features In The Quezaltenango Area, John R. Easter Jan 1975

The Geochemistry And Origin Of Volcanic Features In The Quezaltenango Area, John R. Easter

Honors Papers

The city of Quezaltenango is located in southwestern Guatemala, approximately 100 kilometers WNW of Guatemala City. The volcanic features of this area represent a portion of the Central American Quaternary volcanic chain. This chain seems to be controlled by the underthrusting of the Cocos plate beneath the Americas and Caribbean plates, which occurs in the Middle American trench. The two overriding plates, which in the Caribbean finds topographical expression in the Cayman Trough. Molnar and Skyes have suggested that faults in eastern Guatemala may represent the continental extension of the transform. Stoiber and Carr feel that this plate boundary is …

International Journal of Speleology

During the past several years, members of the Association for Mexican Cave Studies have made some surprising additions to the knowledge of the invertebrate fauna of Mexico. None of their finds is more exciting than the species described here, a millipede much larger than the nearest epigean relative in an order outstanding for its scarcity of troglobitic adaptations. The absence of ocelli and the reduction of body pigment in the known epigean typhlobolellids suggest that they are deep humus dwellers preadapted for cave life.

Eine Neue Discoptila Aus Anatolischen Höhlen (Orthoptera, Gryllidae), Alexi Popov

International Journal of Speleology

A new troglophilous cave-cricket, Discoptila beroni n.sp. is described and figured. It is common in the caves Maara near Mersin and Damlatas near Alanya in South Anatolia. The characteristic features of the males, as well as of the females, by which the new species is distinguished from the other eight species of the genus, all distributed in the Mediterranean, are pointed out. D. beroni n.sp. has already been reported erroneously from the cave Damlatas as D. fragosoi (Bol.) and as D. brevis B.-Bien.
