Lower Mississippian Lithostratigraphy, Northern Arkansas, Walter L. Manger, Jack L. Shanks Jan 1976

Lower Mississippian Lithostratigraphy, Northern Arkansas, Walter L. Manger, Jack L. Shanks

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Lower Mississippian lithostratigraphic units in northern Arkansas are (ascending order) the Bachelor, St. Joe, and Boone Formations. These formations disconformably overlie Middle Ordovician to Upper Devonian strata and are overlain disconformably by Meramecan or Chesterian strata. The Bachelor Formation is generally a thin (less than 0.3 m), persistent, orthoquartzitic sandstone with common to abundant phosphatic pebbles overlain by a green silty shale. In northwestern Arkansas, the Bachelor Formation commonly lacks sandstone. The Bachelor Formation has been confused previously with the Sylamore (Upper Devonian) and older sandstone units. Although commonly regarded as a member of the Boone Formation, the St. Joe …

Salt Encroachment : The 1974 Saltland Survey, C V. Malcolm, R. C. Stoneman Jan 1976

Salt Encroachment : The 1974 Saltland Survey, C V. Malcolm, R. C. Stoneman

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

It has long been recognised that the clearing of land for agriculture in the south western Australia is followed by the development of saline soils and streams.

In 1955 and again in 1962, in conjunction with the annual statistical returns, farmers in Western Australia were asked to supply estimates of salt-affected land on their properties.

In 1974 a further survey was conducted, in co-operation with the Australian Bureau of Statistics, using questions covering only the basic information. As the information is again available on a Shire basis a direct comparison can be made with the 1962 survey except for some …

Algal-Bryozoan Carbonate Buildups Within The Pitkin Limestone (Mississippian-Chesterian), Northwest Arkansas, Alex T. Warmath Jan 1976

Algal-Bryozoan Carbonate Buildups Within The Pitkin Limestone (Mississippian-Chesterian), Northwest Arkansas, Alex T. Warmath

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

More than 14 biohermal buildups have been recognized within the Pitkin Limestone (Mississippian-Chesterian) in eastern Washington and western Madison Counties, northwest Arkansas. These buildups resemble previously described algal mounds in upper Pennsylvanian strata of the Midcontinent region, but differ in their faunal and floral constituents. The mounds are composed of calcilutite with variable amounts of spar and fossil allochemical grains. Associated flanking facies consist of mixed biosparite near the core, grading outward into oosparite. A few zones of shaly, poorly washed biomicrite containing rounded clasts bearing Archimedes fragments are interbedded with the flanking mixed biosparite facies. These clasts appear to …

1974 Nonflood-Stage Chemical Loads Of The Buffalo River, Arkansas, Kenneth F. Steele, George H. Wagner Jan 1976

1974 Nonflood-Stage Chemical Loads Of The Buffalo River, Arkansas, Kenneth F. Steele, George H. Wagner

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Dissolved Ca, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Mn, and Zn loads of the Buffalo River generally show trends along the river attributable to changes in geology and vary with the season because of concentration by evapotranspiration and dilution by rain. Suspended material element loads show neither seasonal trends nor trends along the river. The Fe load for the river is predominantly in the suspended material, the Mn load is divided approximately evenly between dissolved and suspended material, and Ca, Mg, Na, K, and Zn are predominantly in the dissolved load.

Methane Distribution And Production In The Georgia Salt Marsh, Larry P. Atkinson, John R. Hall

CCPO Publications

Bacterial action in the anaerobic sediments of Spartina salt marsh produce large quantities of methane. Water in contact with the marsh has methane concentrations 200-300 times normal oceanic concentrations. The methane content of the water varies from maximum of 1.2 mu l CH sub(4)/ super(l) super(-1) in the summer to a minimum of 0.005 mu l CHl1

The Distribution Of The Fauna In The Interstitial Habitats Of Riverine Sediments Of The Danube And The Piesting (Austria), Dan L. Danielopol Jan 1976

The Distribution Of The Fauna In The Interstitial Habitats Of Riverine Sediments Of The Danube And The Piesting (Austria), Dan L. Danielopol

International Journal of Speleology

The interstitial fauna living in the riverine sediments of the Danube and Piesting have been investigated in Lower Austria. The nematodes, oligochaetes and cyclopoids are the most abundant groups (they represent up to 80% of the total fauna). The harpacticoids, the insect larvae, the isopods, the amphipods, the cladocera and the limnohalacarids are poorly represented (generally under 20% of the total fauna). The absence of hydrachnellids is striking. The vertical distribution of the interstitial fauna shows for several groups i.e. limnohalacarids, ostracods, isopods, harpacticoids, that the epigean species are quantitatively better represented in the upper sediment layers instead of the …

Über Ökologische Und Biogeographische Trends Innerhalb Der Harpacticoiden (Copepoda - Crustacea), Hans Jakobi

International Journal of Speleology

The majority of harpacticoids show a great dependence on the peculiarities of their habitat. This research attempted to detect the possible existence of biogeographical and ecological trends. The limited biogeographical data is discussed, so this is applied the method of analysis of morpho-ecological correlation (Jakobi, 1962) developed to determine ecological trends. This way, all characteristics of the harpacticoidean body selected were studied to check their adaptative value. Based on those results it was possible to establish and to define ecological units. Data were then subjected to statistical tests of homogeneity for variance and significance. Graphs are used to demonstrate the …

Die Vertikale Verteilung Von Ciliaten Im Stygorhithral Der Fulda (Beitrag Zur Kenntnis Mesopsammaler Ciliaten In Fließgewässern), Günther Lüpkes Jan 1976

Die Vertikale Verteilung Von Ciliaten Im Stygorhithral Der Fulda (Beitrag Zur Kenntnis Mesopsammaler Ciliaten In Fließgewässern), Günther Lüpkes

International Journal of Speleology

19 species of ciliates were found in interstitial biotopes of the Fulda Headwater. Two of these were new: Haplocaulus hengsti, n.sp. and Epistylis rotti, n.sp. (Peritrichida). The number of ciliate species decreases from the surface down so deeper layers; in a depth of 50 cm, only three species were found: Haplocaulus hengsti and Epistylis rotti and another small ciliate Trachelophyllum apiculatum. There was little detritus in this layer, and so, the abundance of the ciliates was low. On the other hand, there is little predation in deeper layers of stygorhithral sand and gravel. Small, long …

From his personal research undertaken in the subterranean field (natural and artificial cavities) in Shaba (ex-Katanga, in S.E. Zaire) and Rwanda, the author briefly defines the macroclimate of the prospected regions as well as the microclimate of the subterranean habitat (humidity and temperature). A reversible hypothermia has been noticed in the dry season only (from May till August) in eleven species of troglophile Chiroptera belonging to the following families: Rhinolophidae (7 species of Rhinolophus), Hipposideridae (only Hipposideros ruber) and Vespertilionidae (Miniopterus inflatus rufus, Miniopterus schreibersi arenarius & M.s. natalensis, Myotis tricolor). No sign of lethargy has …

Geology, Mineralogy, And Fluid Inclusion Geothermometry Of The El Paso Gold Mine, Cripple Creek, Colorado, Charles Albon Lane

Masters Theses

"The Cripple Creek district consists of a deeply- eroded, breccia-filled volcanic subsidence basin. Subsidence of the basin occurred along fissures formed by fracturing during the Laramide orogeny. The material filling the crater probably developed first as fissure flows. Erosion of the volcanics formed the material now filling the basin. Volcanic activity was accompanied by intrusion of numerous sills, dikes, and stocks of several different rock types into the breccia and surrounding granite, punctuated by occasional explosive activity. The majority of the mines in the district lie within the volcanic center; however, a few important ones, most notably the El Paso …

Geology Of The Zacapa Quadrangle And Vicinity, Guatemala, Central America, David Philip Schwartz Jan 1976

Geology Of The Zacapa Quadrangle And Vicinity, Guatemala, Central America, David Philip Schwartz

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Geologic mapping in the Zacapa quadrangle and southern Rio Hondo quadrangle has shown that the Las Ovejas Complex, of probable pre-Early Pennsylvanian age and the oldest rock south of the Motagua fault zone, is a sequence of interlayered schist, marble, amphibolite, gneiss and associated penetratively deformed diorite, tonalite and granodiorite. Metavolcanic, metavolcaniclastic, and metasedimentary rock includes original basalt, dacitic and rhyodacitic tuff, minor andesite, limestone and pelite. Emplacement of diorite coincided with regional prograde metamorphism to middle and upper amphibolite facies. Hornblende, diopside, staurolite, sillimanite, and K-feldspar formed in rock of appropriate bulk composition. In the Zacapa quadrangle, metamorphic grade …

In the second part of the note a discussion is given dealing with the importance of different characters in the systematics of the genus Bathynella Vejdovsky and with species individualisation in the sub-genus Bathynella (Bathynella) Vejdovsky. We emphasize the differentiation of some elements of the VIIIth male pereiopodes, these appendages never having the same morphology in different species. Taking into account the structure of the apical end of the pennian anterior plates, we suggest to group separately boteai with vaducrisensis and plesai with ruffoi. The main conclusions of the recent studies on the European Bathynella are also given.

Recent Karyological Research On Cave Planarians From Europe, Nicole Gourbault

International Journal of Speleology

Very few studies have been involved with karyology in Planarian living in total darkness. The first results indicate however, that most of the hypogeous Paludicoles have a diploid chromosome number notably superior to the similar surface forms. In another connection a relative uniformity of the morphology of the chromosome is observed in the same group, so that the studied karyotypes show a similar general aspect.

Hydrogeologische Untersuchungen In Einem Von Salzhaltigem Uferfiltrat Durchströmten Bodenkörper, Matthias Neuß Jan 1976

Hydrogeologische Untersuchungen In Einem Von Salzhaltigem Uferfiltrat Durchströmten Bodenkörper, Matthias Neuß

International Journal of Speleology

An aquifer in a horseshoe bend of the Weser river was investigated regarding the processes of the river water infiltration. The geology and geometry of the aquifer was ascertained by means of numerous borings. The hydraulic situation before and after infiltration was determined by water table maps. The intrusion of a salt-freshwater lens could be reconstructed from the beginning of infiltration until ten years later by means of previous results of chemical analysis. By new chemical analysis it was proved that river water infiltrates into the aquifer. Additionally it was established that the relatively high concentration of chloride is reduced …

Les Adaptations À La Volvation Du Squelette Externe De La Tête Chez Caecosphaeroma Burgundum Dollfus, Crustacé Isopode Des Eaux Souterraines, C. Marvillet

International Journal of Speleology

The study of the cephalic capsule of Caecosphaeroma burgundum, a subterranean waters Isopod, demonstrates improved adaptations to volvation; these concern in a similar manner the other regions of the body, particularly the pleotelson. From a primitive aquatic Isopod structure, the head of this blind Spheromid has been completely fashioned by many mechanical factors: posterior margin of pleotelson providing support on the head, relation of anterior angles of the second pereionit and, above all, the mandibular palps and antennae which retract into two deep grooves of the face. The comparative study of the head of other volvational Isopods shows the …

Review Of The Oligocene Cetacea, Frank C. Whitmore Jr., Albert E. Sanders

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Early in the Oligocene Epoch, Cetacea of the primitive suborder Archaeoceti had already declined sharply from their apparent abundance in Eocene seas. By the beginning of the Miocene, archaeocetes are known to have survived only in the northeast Atlantic and southwest Pacific Oceans. Concurrently with this decline, the first members of the suborders Odontoceti and Mysticeti appeared. They are known from only a few specimens, mostly in upper Oligocene deposits, on both coasts of North America, in Germany, Austria, Italy, the Caucasus, Azerbaijan, Australia, and New Zealand. Two important odontocete genera, Agorophius and Xenorophus, come from beds that are …
