Index Catalogue To Russian, Central And Eastern European, And Chinese Literature In Medical Entomology, Volume 1: Diptera, George Anastes

United States Naval Medical Research Unit 3: Publications

Over the past several years a large number of references from the USSR, Eastern Europe, and China have been collected dealing with arthropods of medical importance. These references were coded on keysort cards which made it possible to index as many as fifteen subject areas on one card. The usefulness of this indexing system was evident by the number of medical entomologists who used it in searching for references in their specialty. In response to requests from workers in the United States and other countries who did not have ready access to the index. it was decided to publish these …

The Pathogenesis Of Periodontal Disease And Treatment Implications, Richard C. Oliver Aug 1962

The Pathogenesis Of Periodontal Disease And Treatment Implications, Richard C. Oliver

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Presently accepted concepts of the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease do not adequately explain the following consistent clinical observations: (1) equal local etiologic factors do not result in equal periodontal destruction in all patients; and, (2) equal therapy is not equally successful in all patients. The differences in patient response must be due to differences within the patient. By relating the broadened concept of disease, as described by Engel, to periodontal disease, the reasons for these individual patient differences become apparent. This concept consideres[sic] disease in relation to the patient's genie and developmental background, as well as the present …

Economy And Protein Malnutrition Among The Digo, Luther P. Gerlach Jan 1961

Economy And Protein Malnutrition Among The Digo, Luther P. Gerlach

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In short, even where protein malnutrition is primarily a result of poor environment, economy, and technology, other, often less obvious, traditional cultural patterns must be taken into account in any development and improvement program. If kwashiorkor is to be eliminated satisfactorily, and if contingent problems are to be kept to a minimum, these other patterns must often also be modified.

The importance of traditional cultural patterns is perhaps best illustrated by an example of a people who suffer from protein malnutrition primarily because of them. The Digo tribe of coastal Kenya and Tanganyika, among whom this writer conducted anthropological field …

Copper And Cobalt Deficiency Of Livestock In Western Australia, H. W. Bennetts Nov 1959

Copper And Cobalt Deficiency Of Livestock In Western Australia, H. W. Bennetts

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Part 1. Distribution and effects

DISEASES of animals due to copper and cobalt deficiencies are well known in this State where much of the original work, on the cause of these conditions, was carried out. These investigations have been recorded elsewhere and described briefly in this Journal by Filmer and Underwood (1936), Bennetts (1935), (1937), (1940), (1941), (1942) and Bennetts et. al. (1939), (1942). During more recent years the distribution of these deficiencies in Western Australia has been surveyed in some detail. This survey has been made by field investigations and by chemical estimations of animal tissues and pastures from …

Natural History Of Thelazia Californiensis Price, 1930 (Nematoda: Thelaziidae), A Mammalian Eye Worm, Warren E. Parmelee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Various factors—embryology, host associations, and seasonal changes In eye worn populations—tending to promote the propagation of T. califomlensls were studied.

The early embryology closely parallels that of other nematode species.

The mature embryos remain alive in saline at 35°C as long as 5 days. Dead embryos can be distinguished from living ones by virtue of the rapid staining by methylene blue by the former. Parturient female thelazias release embryos into saline, and embryos are found regularly in tear secretions of infected laboratory rabbits.

Ovic embryos possess an enveloping egg membrane containing chitin. On this account, this eye worm species is …

A Study Of Eighty-Three Cases Of Glaucoma Treated By Cyclodiathermy With Reference To The Facility Of Outflow, Robert V. Shearer Jan 1956

A Study Of Eighty-Three Cases Of Glaucoma Treated By Cyclodiathermy With Reference To The Facility Of Outflow, Robert V. Shearer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

[Abstract Not Included]

Introduction

This study is an attempt to discover the mode of action and evaluate the effectivity of cyclodiathermy in the treatment of glaucoma, using the Muller electric tonometer in studies on the facility of outflow.

This series of cases represents a cross section of the advanced cases of glaucoma which were operated on by attending and resident staff at the White Memorial Hospital between January 1953, and December 1955. Eighty-nine operations were performed on eighty-three eyes of fifty-eight patients of whom, with but few exeptions [sic], had lost field in the poorer eye to less than five …

Leaflet No 1002 - Swine Paratyphoid (Salmonellosis Necrotic Enteritis), C R. Toop Jan 1950

Leaflet No 1002 - Swine Paratyphoid (Salmonellosis Necrotic Enteritis), C R. Toop

Bulletins 1 - 2999

Paratyphoid is an infectious disease of pigs which is likely to make it appearance wherever pig raising is practised.

It may occur in an acute septicaemic form which is often rapidly fatal and accompanied by serious mortality and in a sub-acute or chronic form known as necrotic enteritis which is characterised by unthriftiness and scouring. The out breaks occurring in Western Australia are principally of the acute type and they are usually associated with the introduction of pigs from saleyards.

The Effect Of Adrenaline Injection On Glycogenolysis And Glycogenesis In Rat Livers, Virginia Mary Zingsheim Feb 1945

The Effect Of Adrenaline Injection On Glycogenolysis And Glycogenesis In Rat Livers, Virginia Mary Zingsheim

Bachelors’ Theses

Present day knowledge concerning the liver is derived from many sources and the accumulation of many methods of investigation. Sugar, which is needed by the body for energy, is stored in the liver as glycogen. Claude Bernard (26), an eminent physiologist, was the first to suspect that carbohydrates were stored in the liver. Faulty glycogen synthesis and hydrolysis results in one of our most widespread diseases, diabetes. Thus, many biochemists and physiologists have tried to find the mechanism of the process, and the primary and secondary facts which affect glycogenesis and glycogenolysis. Although the chemical secretions and hormones of such …

The Health Of The School Child With Special Reference To Heart Cases, Annette G. West Mar 1933

The Health Of The School Child With Special Reference To Heart Cases, Annette G. West

Bachelors’ Theses

The first of the generally accepted objectives of education is health. The importance to the community of the health of its children can hardly be over-emphasized when it is fully realized that the children of to-day are the bread winners and the parents of to-morrow. The health of our children is the foundation upon which the welfare of the community depends. To conserve the health of the child is as much a function of the state as it is to conserve the natural resources. To investigate the evils that exist and to remedy all that may be remedied without transgressing …

Summary Of Two Years' Study Of Insects In Relation To Pellagra, Allan H. Jennings Sep 1914

Summary Of Two Years' Study Of Insects In Relation To Pellagra, Allan H. Jennings

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Excerpt:

With the growing interest in pellagra, following the authoritative recognition of its presence in the United States in 1907, the study of its etiology was taken up by various investigators and the several theories of causation were subjected to close scrutiny.

Prominent among these theories was that of insect transmission, first advanced by Sambon, who limited this function to the species of blood-sucking gnats comprising the genus Simulium.

The importance of the disease and the possibility of such a factor in its causation, led the Bureau of Entomology, late in 1911, to undertake an investigation of the subject …

Report Of The Zoologist, Henry B. Ward Jan 1895

Report Of The Zoologist, Henry B. Ward

Studies from the University of Nebraska Zoological Laboratory

In the report of last year was given a full summary of the present state of our knowledge concerning the parasites of man and the domestic animals. It is the intention of the following pages to review the parasitic fauna of the state of Nebraska so far as it is definitely determined, and also to include a list of some species reported but not accurately identified. The second section of this report presents a brief description of some important parasites not included in the group of worms, and hence not mentioned in last year's report. I shall omit all parasites, …
