Creating Change In Pediatric Health Disparities: Utilizing Systemsbased Thinking To Overcome Disparities Affecting Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes In Kentucky, Sydney Speed
Lewis Honors College Thesis Collection
Healthcare disparities are perpetuated and upheld for patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in rural and underserved urban areas of Kentucky. By adopting systems-based thinking, we can identify areas of the healthcare system to change to eliminate these disparities. Namely, key leverage points of this system include distribution and utilization of resources, finances and the movement of money, and communication pathways. To address the disparities surrounding pediatric T1D in Kentucky, a state-wide medical event called Kentucky Diabetes Family Day (KDFD) was hosted. The focus of this event was to lessen the effects of these specific healthcare disparities by altering key …

The healthcare industry worldwide was significantly affected by the high volume of patients being infected with the Coronavirus. The COVID-19 virus brought on several challenges for the healthcare industry and the federal government in the United States. Hospitals operated under severe circumstances to treat sick COVID-19 patients and keep their employees safe from contracting the disease. Government mandated social distancing, mask wearing, and cancelation and closing of services to assist with stopping the spread of the virus. This study aimed to identify how the pandemic affected the healthcare …
Examining A Blood Biomarker Approach To Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption, Samantha Ford
Examining A Blood Biomarker Approach To Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption, Samantha Ford
Theses and Dissertations--Medical Sciences
Blood-brain barrier disruption has been identified to associate with the pathogenesis several neurological diseases such as dementia [1, 2], multiple sclerosis[3, 4], acute or chronic cerebral ischemia[5], brain trauma[5], meningitis[5], encephalitis[5], stroke[6], and seizures[7]. Being able to effectively identify blood-brain barrier disruption is limited in methodology. The current standard is using a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) albumin to serum albumin index, which requires the use of a lumbar puncture. A novel method of identifying blood-brain barrier disruption utilizing blood biomarkers is proposed in this study. Participants in this study had previously collected blood and CSF samples, which were analyzed to compare …

Split Catalytic Probes For The Detection Of Monkeypox Virus, Jaehyun Ahn
Split Catalytic Probes For The Detection Of Monkeypox Virus, Jaehyun Ahn
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The COVID-19 outbreak highlighted the important role that diagnostic tests play in the healthcare system. To reduce the impact of infectious disease outbreaks, the development of rapid and cost-effective point-of-care-tests (POCTs) is crucial. With the dissemination of the Monkeypox (Mpox) virus, it became a necessity to produce POCTS that are inexpensive and easy to use. This work explored the construction of two colorimetric assays that aim to detect Mpox genetic signatures. One is based on the split-peroxidase-like deoxyribozyme probes (sPDz), while the other utilizes a cascade system of split RNA-cleaving deoxyribozyme (sDz) and peroxidase-like deoxyribozyme (PDz). Both rely on catalytic …

Survey Based Investigation On Diet/Bmi In Indian-American Communities, Arjan Deol
Pitzer Senior Theses
Obesity is defined as a disease where abnormal or excessive fat accumulation presents risks to one’s health. It is also associated with a wide variety of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, sleep apnea, and cardiovascular health. In recent years, the rates of obesity have continued to grow in the United States, especially amongst the Indian-American community. Asians have a lower BMI cutoff ( ≥27.5 kg/m2) for obesity instead of the standard ≥30.0 kg/m2 recommendations by CDC due to a higher prevalence of weight-related diseases at lower BMI and carrying 3-5% more body fat than an average Western …

Cancer is a devastating disease that remains a leading cause of death worldwide. According to recent statistics, cancer was responsible for 10 million deaths in 2020 alone (Ferlay et al., 2021). Of these cases, viral infections associated cancers have been found to contribute to a significant proportion, with chronic infections such as hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV), human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) being particularly noteworthy. Inflammation and immune response are also closely linked to tumorigenesis, making it crucial to understand how viral infections and host immune response contribute to cancer development …

Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC), a recognized measure of advanced vascular disease, is associated with higher cardiovascular risk and poorer long-term prognosis. AAC can be assessed on dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-derived lateral spine images used for vertebral fracture assessment at the time of bone density screening using a validated 24-point scoring method (AAC-24). Previous studies have identified robust associations between AAC-24 score, incident falls, and fractures. However, a major limitation of manual AAC assessment is that it requires a trained expert. Hence, we have developed an automated machine-learning algorithm for assessing AAC-24 scores (ML-AAC24). In this prospective study, we evaluated the …

Decoding The Mechanism Of Hypertension Through Multiomics Profiling, Eric Adua
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Hypertension, characterised by a constant high blood pressure, is the primary risk factor for multiple cardiovascular events and a major cause of death in adults. Excitingly, innovations in high-throughput technologies have enabled the global exploration of the whole genome (genomics), revealing dysregulated genes that are linked to hypertension. Moreover, post-genomic biomarkers, from the emerging fields of transcriptomics, proteomics, glycomics and lipidomics, have provided new insights into the molecular underpinnings of hypertension. In this paper, we review the pathophysiology of hypertension, and highlight the multi-omics approaches for hypertension prediction and diagnosis.

Introduction:
As knowledge about neurological examination findings in autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease (ADAD) is incomplete, we aimed to determine the frequency and significance of neurological examination findings in ADAD.
Methods:
Frequencies of neurological examination findings were compared between symptomatic mutation carriers and non mutation carriers from the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network (DIAN) to define AD neurological examination findings. AD neurological examination findings were analyzed regarding frequency, association with and predictive value regarding cognitive decline, and association with brain atrophy in symptomatic mutation carriers.
Results:
AD neurological examination findings included abnormal deep tendon reflexes, gait disturbance, pathological cranial nerve examination findings, …

Advance Care Planning In Cancer Patient - Caregiver Dyads, Natasha Michael
Theses
For many, a cancer diagnosis signals death's inevitability and elicits much existential concern. In the quest for life prolongation, many are offered or seek life-sustaining treatments, fail to appreciate a declining trajectory and lack the opportunity to seek information or plan meaningfully for their future.
Advance care planning (ACP) provides an avenue for patients and their caregivers to plan for future care. ACP is defined ‘as a process that supports adults at any age or stage of health in understanding and sharing their personal values, life goals and preferences regarding future medical care’ and is a key quality indicator in …

Introduction: An ancient disease identified in Egyptian and Peruvian mummies, tuberculous spondylitis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is considered the most common form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) [1,5]. Despite the identification of the causative agent, the improvement in diagnostic tools, the production of the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine, and the development of antimicrobial regimens since the disease was first described, it remains a major health burden today with significant morbidity and mortality among developing countries [5]. Spinal TB can lead to severe deformity and permanent neurological deficits, as such early recognition …
