Prophylactic Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion In The Management Of Placenta Percreta: A Case Report, Monica Rodriguez, Nicole Tenzel, Rachel Russo, Robert Cohen

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Introduction: Placenta accreta spectrum disorders (PASD) are associated with severe maternal morbidity, including hemorrhage requiring massive transfusion, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, coagulopathy, organ ischemia or failure, and death. The adherent placenta results in continuous mixed arterial and venous bleeding, preventing the uterus from adequately contracting. This can result in a blood loss rate of 600 mL or more per minute, posing a risk of exsanguination in less than five minutes. Few reports exist on the prophylactic use of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) to reduce obstetric hemorrhage and its application for prolonged occlusion times exceeding 60 …

Archives of Neurosurgery

The arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a vascular malformation characterized by fistulas between arteries and veins forming a nidus, without interposition of capillary vessels and of which early draining vein is identified at the digital angiography. Potential reports of its existence date from the second century AD. Spetzler and Martin (S-M) proposed a classification considering three features and Lawton then added new predictors. A maximum of 10 score can be achieved by applying the modified S-M grade system. This classification guides decision-making and the possible choice of the multimodal treatment (surgery, radiosurgery and embolization). We discuss historical, pathological, clinical and therapeutic …

Reproductive Autonomy In Immunological Intervention: Ethical Boundaries In Maternal-Fetal Immune Therapy, Marium Z. Rizvi Jan 2025

Reproductive Autonomy In Immunological Intervention: Ethical Boundaries In Maternal-Fetal Immune Therapy, Marium Z. Rizvi

Journal of Health Ethics

Recent advances in immunology have broken barriers in reproductive medicine through immune-modulating therapies that support fertility and pregnancy. Treatments such as intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and intralipid infusions are increasingly offered to patients with Recurrent Implantation Failure (RIF) or Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL), conditions that result in miscarriages and failed IVF treatments (Pillarysetti et al., 2023). Maternal-fetal immunology reveals a delicate interplay between immune tolerance and defense: the maternal system must accept a genetically foreign fetus while preserving immunological protection. Disruptions in this balance are implicated in implantation disorders and pregnancy failure. As a result, immune-based therapies have emerged as promising …

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Melanoma is the most aggressive and deadly form of skin cancer that arises from the transformation of melanocytes, the pigment producing cells of the skin. In the year 2024 there will be approximately 10,000 new cases of melanoma diagnosed and approximately 8,000 deaths attributed to melanoma in the United States. In this study we treated a group of male and female transgenic mice that spontaneously develop metastatic melanoma, TGS, with a G-protein-coupled estrogen receptor agonist LNS8801 to assess the efficacy on disease progression. A second group of male and female TGS mice was also exposed to UVB irradiation to mimic …

Electronic And Regular Cigarettes Induce Transcriptional And Physiological Changes In Cardiomyocytes, Hesham Basma, Kajari Dhar, Jason Payne, Stephen I. Rennard, Brian D. Lowes

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is an important etiology for cardiac diseases and electronic cigarettes are increasing in popularity. In the current study, we assessed physiological and transcriptional changes in human induced pluripotent stem cell derived cardiomyocytes (iPS-CMs) after exposure to electronic cigarette extract (ECE) and conventional cigarette extract (CSE).

METHODS: iPS-CMS were plated on multi-electrode array plates (MEA), electrical and contractile properties were determined by Maestro Edge and computer assisted video analysis (MuscleMotion). Transcriptional profiles were accessed by direct digital mRNA detection of heart failure targeted genes.

RESULTS: Both ECE and CSE extracts significantly prolong beat period from baseline compared to …

Applications Of Motor Learning Strategies In Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Scoping Review, Kathlynne F. Eguia, Shamay S.M. Ng, Catherine M. Capio, Thomson W.L. Wong

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Synthesized knowledge of motor learning strategies could be used to facilitate the motor development of children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). To map the current research, we followed the established framework and protocol for scoping reviews. Among the 25 papers, the most studied strategies include dual-task and observational learning. The studies predominantly involved children with cerebral palsy, but research is growing among children with intellectual disability, autism and developmental coordination disorder. Most of the studies integrated motor learning strategies in researcher-led interventions that are delivered over several weeks in school, home, or clinic settings. Further research using robust study designs and …

Effects Of Rideshare Services On Alcohol Related Motor Vehicle Collision (Mvc) Outcomes, David Bassa, Morgan Johnson, Devika Pavuluri, Michael Truitt

North Texas Research Forum 2025

BACKGROUND: In 2022, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported over 42,000 motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) deaths with 31% of MVC deaths secondary to alcohol (AR-MVCs). In 2010, rideshare services (RSS) were introduced to the market providing a new method of transportation with the potential to reduce the incidence of driving under the influence (DUI). We analyzed the NHTSA database to evaluate trends in alcohol related MVC deaths (AR-MVC Deaths) since the initiation of ride share services. METHODS: Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) source from the NHTSA was used to obtain data from years 2009 and 2022 from 50 …

Case Report Of Neurosyphilis, Caroline Finnerty, Elizabeth Diaz, Teena Mathew

North Texas Research Forum 2025

This is the case of a 29 year old female who initially presented with generalized joint aches noted to have neurosyphilis. Because of her delayed treatment, this case presents interesting findings that we classically no longer see in syphilis cases due to early detection and treatment. The case looks at the early symptoms as well as late symptoms if syphilis is left untreated. The patient was ultimately treated with IV penicillin with improvement of her symptoms.

Shortness Of Breath In A 39 Year Old: A Rare Case Of Heart Failure, Mohammed Rashik, Olufunmilola Adeleye, Jason Thompson, Tasaduq Mir

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Currently, 2.6% of Americans suffer from heart failure. Common causes include coronary artery disease, chronic hypertension, arrhythmia, and myocardial infarction, often managed in clinical and hospital settings. A rare cause, however, is infiltrative cardiomyopathy, affecting just 0.04% of the U.S. population. This condition, often caused by amyloid buildup or sarcoidosis, is challenging to diagnose and typically requires a heart transplant due to its rapid progression. Thorough investigations into heart failure causes are crucial to identify this rare condition. A 39-year-old male with no significant medical history presented to the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) Family Medicine clinic …

Hearts Hidden Message: Right Ventricular Thrombus Reveals Esophageal Adenocarcinoma, Devika Adusumilli, Seline Haci, Jafri Imran, Arman Vaghefi, Mehdi Khalafi, Ikponmwosa Iyamu, Sarvanan Balamuthusamy

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Introduction Right ventricular thrombi are uncommon, usually found with concurrent pulmonary emboli and associated with significant mortality. They often originate from deep vein thrombi but may also be due to primary intracardiac processes . A right ventricular thrombus can be an unexpected marker for underlying malignancies, including esophageal cancer. This occurs due to the hypercoagulable state often induced by malignancy. Here we report a presentation where the identification of a right ventricular thrombus led to the diagnosis of esophageal cancer. Case Presentation Our patient is a 57-year old male with no past medical history who experienced an episode of dizziness …

When Skin Necrosis Mimics: Diagnostic And Therapeutic Challenges Of Calciphylaxis In A Ckd Patient With A Mechanical Heart Valve, Sienna Luk, Harshil Parekh, Vaishnavi Singh, Darshan Bhatty, Sathish Karmegam Jan 2025

When Skin Necrosis Mimics: Diagnostic And Therapeutic Challenges Of Calciphylaxis In A Ckd Patient With A Mechanical Heart Valve, Sienna Luk, Harshil Parekh, Vaishnavi Singh, Darshan Bhatty, Sathish Karmegam

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Calciphylaxis is a rare but serious condition characterized by the calcification and thrombosis of small blood vessels, predominantly affecting patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Diagnosis can be challenging due to overlapping features with other vascular conditions, such as warfarin-induced skin necrosis (WSN). We present a case of a patient with ESRD and typical risk factors—peritoneal dialysis, hyperparathyroidism, and warfarin use—who exhibited classic skin findings suggestive of calciphylaxis. However, two skin biopsies were inconclusive. Management involved addressing the patient's calciphylaxis risk factors, optimizing dialysis, and initiating sodium thiosulfate therapy. The case was further complicated by the need to replace warfarin, …
