CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

Objective: The aim of this work was to determine whether minority women are more likely to die of cervical cancer. A population-based cohort study was performed using Texas Cancer Registry (TCR) data from 1998 to 2002.

Methods: A total of 5,166 women with cervical cancer were identified during 1998–2002 through the TCR. Measures of socioeconomic status (SES) and urbanization were created using census block group-level data. Multilevel logistic regression was used to calculate the odds of dying from cervical cancer by race, and Cox proportional hazards modeling was used for cervical cancer-specific survival analysis.

Results: After adjusting for age, SES, …

Polysorbate 80 Inhibition Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilm Formation And Its Cleavage By The Secreted Lipase Lipa, C M. Toutain-Kidd, S C. Kadivar, C T. Bramante, S A. Bobin, Michael E. Zegans

Dartmouth Scholarship

Surface-associated bacterial communities known as biofilms are an important source of nosocomial infections. Microorganisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa can colonize the abiotic surfaces of medical implants, leading to chronic infections that are difficult to eradicate. Our study demonstrates that polysorbate 80 (PS80), a surfactant commonly added to food and medicines, is able to inhibit biofilm formation by P. aeruginosa on a variety of surfaces, including contact lenses.

Statistical Hypothesis Testing For Postreconstructed And Postregistered Medical Images, Eugene Demidenko Oct 2009

Statistical Hypothesis Testing For Postreconstructed And Postregistered Medical Images, Eugene Demidenko

Dartmouth Scholarship

Postreconstructed and postregistered medical images are typically treated as the raw data, implicitly assuming that those operations are error free. We question this assumption and explore how the precision of reconstruction and affine registration can be assessed by the image covariance matrix and confidence interval, called the confidence eigenimage, using a statistical model-based approach. Various hypotheses may be tested after image reconstruction and registration using classical statistical hypothesis testing vehicles: Is there a statistically significant difference between images? Does the intensity at a specific location or area of interest belong to the “normal” range? Is there a tumor? Does the …

Ekg Tracking For Augmented Standardized Patient Virtual Pathology Stethoscope Heart Auscultation, Sujith Surendran

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In recent years, a lot of research has focused on improving the clinical skills of medical students and medical practitioners using standardized patients. Standardized patients (SP's) are used by the medical students and physicians in place of mannequins for a more realistic experience. SP's are real people trained to simulate specific illnesses and conditions to a high degree of accuracy which makes it difficult for the medical students to distinguish them from real patients. This research will enhance the capabilities of the standardized patients by providing a non-invasive, natural, harmless and realistic appearing tracking method for placing virtual pathologies using …

The Role Of Human Endogenous Retroviruses In Renal Cell Carcinoma, Michele D. Tisdale Oct 2009

The Role Of Human Endogenous Retroviruses In Renal Cell Carcinoma, Michele D. Tisdale

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Human endogenous retroviruses make up approximately 8-9% of the human genome. A number of expressed HERVs, those that are actively transcribing, have been associated with various cancers. Suppression mechanisms that control HERV expression often fail or become more permissive in tissues where expression should be restricted. Previous studies have identified HERV expression in breast cancer tissues, whereas normal tissue HERV expression remained suppressed. In addition, studies of DNA hypermethylation have correlated with the ability to contribute to cancer development. Hypermethylation of several tumor suppressor genes occurs frequently in cancers and alterations in promoter regions could contribute to the development of …

Section of Gastroenterology

Pleomorphic carcinomas are primary malignant tumours that are known to arise in the lungs, pancreas, gall bladder and intestine. A patient with polypoid tumour of the esophagus is described in this report. The patient presented with dysphagia. Diagnostic and therapeutic intervention required endoscopic evaluation and treatment. Benign esophageal tumours are rarely seen and originate from the upper third of esophagus. We observed an esophageal tumour which was interpreted as spindle cell carcinoma of the esophagus that caused obstruction. We present the clinical picture and histopathological findings of the tumour. To our knowledge this is the first local report of spindle …

Primary Iga And Igg Subclass Deficiency In A 17-Year-Old Pakistani Girl: A Case Report., Taimur Saleem, Madiha Rabbani, Bushra Jamil

Department of Medicine

Primary immunodeficiency disorders pose a diagnostic dilemma for physicians in the developing countries such as Pakistan because of lack of adequate diagnostic facilities. We present here the case of a 17-year-old girl who had a history of recurrent respiratory tract infections since childhood and had been treated with anti-tuberculous medications thrice, for a total of 24 months. She had also received multiple courses of antibiotics. Her initial presentation to our hospital was with acute bronchopneumonia. Her past medical history of recurrent infections also alerted the treating physician to the possibility of bronchiectasis secondary to a variety of underlying potential pathologies …

The Regulation Of The Ospz And Orf-2 Promoters In The Shigella Flexneri By The Virulence Factor Virb, David Basta, Helen J. Wing

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Shigella flexneri is a pathogenic bacterium that is the causative agent of shigellosis, an illness characterized by severe dysentery. Shigella carries many of its virulence genes on a large virulence plasmid and consequently this plasmid is the focus of research in the Wing lab. My research focuses on the transcriptional regulation of a newly identified gene called ospZ. This gene’s protein product is secreted outside the bacterial cell and assists in polymorphonuclear leukocyte migration, a function that is believed to enhance the virulence of Shigella. Many genes encoded by the Shigella virulence plasmid are regulated by the transcription factor VirB, …

A Generalized Beta Model For The Age Distribution Of Cancers: Application To Pancreatic And Kidney Cancer., Tengiz Mdzinarishvili, Michael X. Gleason, Leo Kinarsky, Simon Sherman

Journal Articles: Eppley Institute

The relationships between cancer incidence rates and the age of patients at cancer diagnosis are a quantitative basis for modeling age distributions of cancer. The obtained model parameters are needed to build rigorous statistical and biological models of cancer development. In this work, a new mathematical model, called the Generalized Beta (GB) model is proposed. Confidence intervals for parameters of this model are derived from a regression analysis. The GB model was used to approximate the incidence rates of the first primary, microscopically confirmed cases of pancreatic cancer (PC) and kidney cancer (KC) that served as a test bed for …

Stigma Cities: Dystopian Urban Identities In The United States West And South In The Twentieth Century, Jonathan Lavon Foster Aug 2009

Stigma Cities: Dystopian Urban Identities In The United States West And South In The Twentieth Century, Jonathan Lavon Foster

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This dissertation examines how historical events and representation of those events relative to the wider historical context have allowed the media, opinion setters, and the ordinary public to use the names of San Francisco, California, Birmingham, Alabama and Las Vegas, Nevada as denigrating adjectives and the effect of this usage on those cities. Exploration of Birmingham’s image as a racist city, San Francisco’s as a gay Mecca, and Las Vegas, Nevada’s as an adult playground or sinful city serves this purpose. These case studies support a central argument that the nature of place-based stigmatization’s influence depends upon ever-shifting cultural values …
