Research Brief: "Effectiveness Of Supported Employment For Veterans With Spinal Cord Injuries: Results From A Randomized Multisite Study", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study was the first of its kind to study the effectiveness of any type of vocational rehabilitation (VR) intervention after a spinal cord injury, and it found that veterans who were provided supported employment were 2.5 times more likely than veterans in the treatment as usual-interventional site (TAU-IS) group and 11.4 times more likely than the treatment as usual-observational site (TAU-OS) group to obtain competitive employment. In practice, veterans seeking employment should enroll in a supported employment program at their local VA. In policy, the VA might recommend that veterans with SCI participate in SE soon after they have …

Investigating Educators’ Views Of Sexuality, Hiv And Aids Education In Working With Students With Disabilities In South African Schools, Julia S. Louw, John Kosciulek, Roy K. Chen

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

The misconception that persons with disabilities are asexual and sexually inactive often relegates teaching sexuality education in special needs schools to a priority of low importance. The access, or lack thereof, to such information causes students lvith disabilities to be at an increased risk of HIV infection; therefore, providing them with sexuality education is imperative. The purpose of the present study was to examine the teachers' and childcare providers' views of teaching sexuality, HIV, and AIDS programs in special needs schools. A survey questionnaire was employed to collect the data. The results showed that among the four major study constructs, …

Resilience, Coping, & Disability: The Development Of A Resilience Intervention, Susan Stuntzner, Michael Hartley

Counseling Faculty Publications

Learning to live with a disability can be a significant transition, and many individuals struggle with the complex challenge of examining how the disability will affect who they are and what their role is in society. Counseling professionals can play a key role in helping individuals address common psychological and social barriers associated with disability. Focused specifically on promoting resilience among individuals with disabilities, the present article provides the rationale for the development of a resilience intervention for counseling professionals to define and better support how individuals transition to living with a disability. Implications address how counseling professionals can use …

Disability And The Counseling Relationship: What Counselors Need To Know, Susan Stuntzner, Michael Hartley Jan 2014

Disability And The Counseling Relationship: What Counselors Need To Know, Susan Stuntzner, Michael Hartley

Counseling Faculty Publications

Disability is often misunderstood by counseling professionals and society. More often than not, persons without disability perceive it as a negative event and as something undesired, although this is not necessarily the experience or belief of many persons with a disability. Counselors that work with persons with disabilities and their families need to understand the experience and process of disability. Unfortunately, many counseling and psychology programs do not offer extensive training in this area. In an effort to enhance counselors’ understanding and effectiveness when counseling persons with disabilities, the authors provide pertinent and relevant information to help individuals respond successfully …

Self-Compassion And Sexuality: A New Model For Women With Disabilities, Susan Stuntzner Jan 2014

Self-Compassion And Sexuality: A New Model For Women With Disabilities, Susan Stuntzner

Counseling Faculty Publications

Sexuality and self-compassion are two concepts which have not been previously considered or combined when discussing the needs of women with disabilities. Sexuality, by itself, is a challenging topic for many counselors to address, let alone in combination with the needs of women with disabilities. Additionally, self-compassion is an emerging area which has rarely been applied to the needs of women with disabilities. In an effort to bridge this gap and to improve the sexual adjustment counseling services offered to women with disabilities, barriers which affect sexual adjustment, sexual concerns, and an illustration of ways to infuse sexuality into the …

State Agency Promising Practice: New Hampshire - Translating Research Into A Position Statement About Integrated Employment, Jennifer Bose, Thinkwork! At The Institute For Community Inclusion At Umass Boston

ThinkWork! Publications

New Hampshire’s Bureau of Developmental Services, Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, other state and local service providers, advocates, and families are committed to increasing the employment rate and the quality of employment outcomes for people with developmental disabilities. These stakeholders met to craft an employment position statement. They framed their discussions according to factors that research has found to be common to “high-performing” states in providing integrated employment opportunities. Then they developed an employment position statement that satisfied all the groups involved, and communicated their shared belief in the importance of integrated employment as a means toward community inclusion.

In North Carolina, counties have been consolidated into Local Management Entities (LMEs). These entities contract for services with community providers and provide oversight on access, utilization, best practices, and community collaborations. The Mecklenberg County LME established the Best Practices Community Committee, comprising service providers, individuals and family members, advocacy agencies, community partners, interested community volunteers, and LME staff. Sub-committees addressed several areas, including employment. Based on their recommendations, a pilot project that uses an outcome-based funding model for follow-along employment services was developed. Follow-along employment supports are ongoing supports that are necessary to assist a person with an intellectual/developmental disability …

A Discussion Of Certain Needs In The Placement Of Cerebral Palsied Individuals In Employment Situations, James K. Schier

All Master's Theses

This paper presents an overview of certain needs involved in the placement of the cerebral palsied in employment situations. For many cerebral palsied individuals there is a need for specific guidelines in the process of selective placement. Follow-up studies show that the cerebral palsied are capable of finding employment in a wide variety of professions.

Sheltered workshop programs, for the more severely disabled cerebral palsied individual, offer employment opportunities and/or vocational habilitation.
