The problem presented in this thesis is threefold. Taken together, these items present the bulk of work for any person attempting curriculum evaluation at the local level:

1. Meaningful evaluative information must be obtained. Instead of glib and generalized assumptions about what ought to be, one should achieve specific information relevant to the researcher as well as his departmental colleagues.

In recent years a difference of opinion has existed regarding the effectiveness of games. Some educators believe games have many intrinsic values to facilitate learning and achievement. Others believe the competition involved from participating in games is detrimental to some student's emotional status. No sound research has been conducted in relation of games to achievement. The purpose of this study is to determine whether a highly competitive game called Brainstorm will serve as a media toward motivation and will improve achievement in science and social studies at the fifth grade level.

To determine the effect of a teacher's reading literature upon the interest in reading books among sixth grade students, one group (experimental) participated in a twenty-eight week program of scheduled daily time during which they listened to literature read by their teacher. A second group (control) were not exposed to literature in this manner but otherwise participated in a similar school program.

The purpose of the study was to determine if changes would occur in the academic achievement of a class and if student attitude would change towards geography as a subject after being taught under an individualized instructional program. The introduction of contemporary music to elementary and junior high school students in performance classes is hindered by a shortage of such music playable by young students. For example, in Contemporary Music for the Schools (Music Educators National Conference, 1966) which is the major source of contemporary music for school bands, 85 band pieces are listed, but only five are designated as suitable for junior high school bands, and only two are designated as suitable for elementary school bands.
