Holistic Approaches In A Secondary Discipline-Based Art Education Curriculum, Jennifer Hicks Limle

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The primary objective of this study is to examine the possible advantages of incorporating the principles and strategies of whole language to a secondary art education curriculum. Reading, or the process of decoding symbols, is an integral part of the learning process. It is particularly pertinent to the three academically oriented components of Discipline-Based Art Education: art criticism, art history, and the study of aesthetics. The holistic strategies promoted by the whole language movement, may be characterized by an emphasis on written responses and experience-oriented, student-centered curriculum. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

A properly installed and maintained system for treating and disposing of household wastewater will minimize the impact of that system on groundwater and surfacewater. State and local codes specify how wastewater systems must be designed, installed, and maintained. For example, Title 124 regulates the design, operation, and maintenance of septic tank systems in Nebraska. In addition, federal and state regulations guide the stabilization and land application of wastewater septage.

G98-1363 Container Gardening (Revised September 2004), Anne Streich, Kim Todd, Kelly Feehan

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Container gardening has many advantages. People with physical limitations may appreciate the ability to garden without bending over or kneeling. Container gardens can also bring the garden closer to one's home or outdoor living area, such as along a sidewalk that is accessible from a wheelchair. Container gardens can place culinary herbs close to the kitchen to be snipped and used in cooking. Container gardens on patios or decks give people with limited outdoor space, such as an apartment and townhome dwellers, the opportunity to enjoy plants.

Growing flowers, vegetables, and other plants in containers provides many gardening opportunities to …

Miscommunication Between Aboriginal Students And Their Non- Aboriginal Teachers In A Bilingual School, Anne Lowell, Brian Devlin Jan 1998

Miscommunication Between Aboriginal Students And Their Non- Aboriginal Teachers In A Bilingual School, Anne Lowell, Brian Devlin

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

A crucial question in cross-cultural education is how to bridge the cultural and linguis- tic differences between home and school so that a child’s identity can be supported without limiting his or her chances of academic success (Eades, 1991). Various models of bilingual education have been implemented in Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory of Australia but the implementation of such programmes is often far from ideal. In the school where this ethnographic study was conducted, miscom- munication between Aboriginal students and their non-Aboriginal teachers was found to be commonplace. Even by late primary school, children often did not comprehend …

Editor's Message

We live in a culture dominated by boundaries of all sorts. Personal space is precious to us, and we become uneasy when others do not honor those invisible borders, ignoring, perhaps, the ways in which those borders shift with age, class, gender, and ethnicity. We have office doors, house doors, and bedroom doors that we close and lock. Many of us demarcate a sharp separation between private life and public work, arguing, as does Michael Bèrubé that the life lived has nothing to do with the work written. And so we exist, being careful not to overstep our …
