The field of curriculum development is one of vital significance with respect to the field of education as a whole. This field represents a complex and sometimes worrisome aspect of educational administration. Many of the problems of today's system stem from inadequacies in the curriculum.

This thesis is presented as a possible aid in the correcting of three of curriculum development's most significant concerns: relevancy, accountability, and individualization. This paper examines the distinctions between general education and education for a career, with a view to synthesizing the literature and presenting salient problems. General education can be defined in several ways. It is defined here as education that puts a person in touch with the main outlines of knowledge available to a historical period or a given culture. Theoretically, education is general if it has no one specific vocation as its end and no one specific discipline or partisan viewpoint as its specialty. Foreign Language Exploratory Programs In Grades 5-8 In Kentucky's Public Schools 1975-1976, Lila Wells

Surveys were sent to the 182 school superintendents in the public schools of Kentucky in order to identify the teachers of exploratory foreign language programs. The survey dealt with three areas: (1) the foreign language program in grades 5-8, (2) the foreign language program in grades 9-12, (3) plans to implement an exploratory program. 153 superintendents (842) returned the surveys and 25 districts (14%) were identified as having a foreign language program in grades 6-8. No foreign language program below grade 6 was identified. Seven new programs were initiated in the 1975-76 school year and five additional school districts plan …

Visual English: A Method Of Language Education For The Deaf, Adapted For The Esl Classroom, Dennis Sayers

This report details an adaptation for the ESL classroom of the Fitzergerald Key, a method of language education for the deaf which utilizes question words to organize vocabulary development and to visualize the regularities of word order in English. The modified Key is a visual means of silent communication shared between teacher and students which utilizes a board and three kinds of manipulatives: squares marked with question words to indicate the 8 slots of an English transitive sentence; cubes which give common modulators of meaning and frequent pro-forms; and vocabulary cards. The following paper is a report describing a TEFL teacher training program taught to the International Career Training students at the School for International Training, Brattleboro, Vermont. It includes : a two-week detailed lesson plan of classroom activities for module participants, a description of their practice-teaching with sample lesson plans and evaluations, participants' evaluations of the course, suggestions for improvement of future modules, and administrative details involved in setting up a course of this type on the SIT campus.

In this paper I investigate the claims on which many present ESL methods are based and examine them in view of recent developments in both learning theory and linguistics. There are reasons to think that the audio-lingual method is grounded in inadequate theories of learning and linguistics; if so, this warrants experiments in new methods and re-examination of such currently acceptable teaching methods as repetition, imitation, and pattern practice. Investigation Of The Reading Achievement In The Instructional Language (English) Of The Secondary And High School Students In Lesotho, South Africa, Kathleen Shannon

This study investigates the vocabulary and comprehension achievement in the English language for secondary and high school students in Lesotho, Southern Africa.

The Nelson Reading Test was administered to seven hundred forty students in various high schools in Lesotho. A statistical analysis was run on the data and conclusions yielded that reading achievement increases with school age, but the rates of improvement differ from one group to another.

Recommendations include additional research suggestions.
