The National Mall: Becoming Correspondents, Chronologers, Autobiographers, And Biographers, Marion Mccorkle Bradford
Graduate Student Independent Studies
The National Mall curriculum for seven and eight-year-olds is a child-centered, literacy and social studies-based series of units.Recognizing the need to connect reading and writing with the students'real life experiences, this study utilizes the prior knowledge which students bring to the curriculum and extends that information with activities which build a common experience for all of the children. Developed for inner-city students in Washington, D.C., the study incorporates teaching and learning about letter writing, timelines, autobiographies, and biographies with history, geography, economics, and political science which is pertinent to the National Mall.

Cooperative Learning: Does It Work And Do Students Like It?, Thomas Neal Vander Stelt
Cooperative Learning: Does It Work And Do Students Like It?, Thomas Neal Vander Stelt
Masters Theses
This study compares a teacher-centered approach to learning with a cooperative learning method in order to discover if either method has greater ability to deliver academic success in a fourth grade geography unit. In addition, the study examines the students' preferences for or against the teacher-centered method and the cooperative method.; There has been some movement toward cooperative learning methods in the school in which this study takes place, but there is also some reluctance of some teachers to try it because they feel that the time it takes is not worth the results it brings. This study includes an …

Using Portfolio Reflections To Re-Form Instructional Programs And Build Curriculum, Sarah Robbins, Nancy Brandt, Susan Goering, Jeanette Nassif, Kathleen Wascha
Faculty Articles
An educator who finds merit in both content- and student-centered instruction may find it difficult to develop a classroom learning program with a firm theoretical base drawing on strengths from both perspectives. The implementation of a collaborative portfolio project as an ongoing curriculum reformation is described.

An International Comparison Of Lower Elementary School Schedules, Barbara Helen Wyns
An International Comparison Of Lower Elementary School Schedules, Barbara Helen Wyns
Masters Theses
International comparisons indicate that U.S. students test below other industrialized countries. Researchers identify a shorter school day and year as a possible reason. While recognizing the fundamental differences from country to country, this study focuses on the measurable variables; days of instruction per year and total hours of instruction for lower elementary students. Comparisons with Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, and the United States, find that U.S. instructional days are fewer, however, the length of day is longer, and that total annual hours are second only to Japan. The amounts of homework and out of school learning are also discussed. The …
What's Wrong With Reform?, James H. Case
What's Wrong With Reform?, James H. Case
New England Journal of Public Policy
The conservative educational reform movement, which still, after more than a decade, is the dominant force in school reform, has had little success in improving schools because it is based on invalid and self-defeating theoretical assumptions. Taken together, these assumptions have the effect of substituting nostalgia — a longing for the schools the reformers themselves attended —for policy and for increasing standardization at the expense of individual growth and development. The reformers (Bloom, Hirsch, Ravitch, Finn, Bennett, et al.) have particular difficulty, given their assumptions, in dealing both with individual differences among students and with ethnic and racial differences among …

Beyond Prevention Curricula: A Guide To Developing Alternative Activities Programs, U.S. Department Of Education
Curriculum
This guide is designed to help educators and youth workers better understand how programs of alternative activities can effectively be used to supplement school-based efforts to prevent alcohol and other drug use among youth, and to encourage schools to become more involved in program development and implementation. It seeks to clear up some of the confusion over what constitutes a program of alternative activities and what its goals should be, to improve understanding of the potential value of this approach, and to recommend promising strategies for improving the effectiveness of these activities in preventing and reducing use of alcohol and …

Using Electronic Portfolios To Archive Student Performance, Phyllis M. Olmstead
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This study regards the use of portfolios for evaluating and documenting student progress and performance. In consideration of the far reaching and global nature of education, the researcher included educators from both the United States and other countries. Based upon the great importance that many countries and states have placed upon servicing students by alternative means, the population sample examined included 500 teachers instructing by both conventional and distance education modalities; Many current educational reform measures and legislative issues concern the attainment of job skills; therefore, both vocational and non-vocational instructors were included in the study.
Examined in the study …
Ec94-448 Let's Preserve: Jams, Jellies & Preserves, Julie A. Albrecht
Ec94-448 Let's Preserve: Jams, Jellies & Preserves, Julie A. Albrecht
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Jams, jellies and preserves are foods with many textures, flavors, and colors. They all consist of fruits preserved mostly by means of sugar and they are thickened or jellied to some extent.
Fruit jelly is a semi-solid mixture of fruit juice and sugar that is clear and firm enough to hold its shape.
Jam also will hold its shape, but it is less firm than jelly. Jam is made from crushed or chopped fruits and sugar. Jams made from a mixture of fruits are usually called conserves, especially when they include citrus fruits, nuts, raisins, or coconut.
Preserves are made …

The Effectiveness Of Two Organizational Strategies In Sixth Grade Social Studies, Liesa Brobst Bailey
The Effectiveness Of Two Organizational Strategies In Sixth Grade Social Studies, Liesa Brobst Bailey
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two organizational strategies (outlining and mapping) in sixth grade social studies. Furthermore, the study sought to determine if the effectiveness of these strategies was dependent upon student learning preference; sequential or global. The effectiveness of the two organizational strategies was determined by comparing differences in group mean scores, using a 2 x 2 factorial ANOVA repeated over one factor (organizational strategy used). The study was replicated a second time. Students were asked to read and study information on the Canadian province, Nova Scotia, using the strategy: outlining and mapping, …

2. A Review Of Curriculum-Based Procedures On Nine Assessment Components, Gerald Tindal
2. A Review Of Curriculum-Based Procedures On Nine Assessment Components, Gerald Tindal
Curriculum-Based Measurement
The purpose of this chapter is to describe curriculum-based procedures from a broad perspective that encompasses the major models appearing in the professional literature in the past 10 years. Rather than simply review the major perspectives, operating assumptions, and implementation directives of these models, however, nine criteria are presented for a uniform comparison. These criteria were implicit in the adoption of curriculum-based measurement (CBM) in Pine County, Minnesota during the initial training and field-based research conducted in the early 1980s. Therefore, they can be used both to structure the review and to provide district personnel a focused evaluation strategy for …
