This study aims to collect information about student needs in designing a flexible blended learning model to optimize learning in learning media courses. Needs analysis is used to explore information about gaps, student needs, and the readiness of lecturers and institutions in creating a blended learning …
Leading And Learning From Inside Out: Insights From Meditative Inquiry, Jody L. Rebek
Leading And Learning From Inside Out: Insights From Meditative Inquiry, Jody L. Rebek
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
This article explores our modern world and our role in shaping collective experiences. By our thoughts, choices and behaviours (our character), we influence our shared reality. Higher education has an imperative responsibility to engage students ethically and develop their character. I offer a teaching metaphor and case study to meaningfully develop students’ self-awareness of character via an undergraduate leadership course. I employed the ‘seed’ metaphor to illustrate how nurturing students’ self-awareness and agency mirrors the growth of a seed within a carefully cultivated ecosystem. Each contemplative practice (character development) intertwined with leadership content (competence and confidence), serves as essential nourishment, …

Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan
This research investigated the perspectives of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students on their experiences with group work (GW) in both online and offline environments. The results indicated that most students who participated in GW in both settings held a positive perception. Implementing a Collaborative Learning (CL) approach can enhance students’ self-confidence, motivation, engagement in a studentcentered environment, and sense of responsibility. However, some students reported negative experiences with online GW due to issues such as unstable internet connections, limited prior experience with GW, and unfamiliarity with relevant applications and software. Consequently, the findings of this study offer valuable …

Assessing University Students’ Self-Reported Vocabulary Learning Strategy Use, Yirgalem Girma
Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan
Learning vocabulary is certainly a vital component of language learning and without this integral component of language communication becomes hardly meaningful. Thus, students are expected to have rich vocabulary power that enables them to communicate successfully via listening, speaking, reading, and writing; it assists students in expressing a range of meanings in various communicative situations for various purposes. This demands students to learn vocabulary using diverse vocabulary learning strategies that assist them in learning (internalizing, storing, recalling, and using) words properly. However, several students barely manage vocabulary learning tasks and/or use appropriate and diverse vocabulary in English classes. Consequently, this …

Your Courses On Board: Using Virtual Whiteboards To Engage Students, Ann Liao
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Virtual whiteboards like Google Jamboard became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. This G.I.F.T.S. paper will demonstrate how I used Google Jamboard in my classes. Virtual whiteboards help students understand what they are learning and promote student participation and engagement in class. Virtual whiteboards are especially useful in the instruction of communication theories. I included in this paper how I taught schema theory using Jamboard. A brief survey was conducted the first time Jamboard was introduced in a course. A total of 60 students filled out the survey. More than 80 percent of the students indicated that they liked the platform, …

Evaluating Current Practices In Operative Nontechnical Skills Training And Feedback In General Surgery Residency: A Mixed Methods Approach, Madeline Cloonan
Theses & Dissertations
Background: Non-technical skills (NTS) are the interpersonal and cognitive abilities that are critical to accomplishing high-risk tasks. Deficiencies in NTS, including communication, teamwork, leadership, and decision-making, are linked to errors in the operating room. Structured training and feedback in NTS remain inconsistent and have not been integrated into daily training. This dissertation addresses this gap by evaluating current NTS training and feedback practices and developing a rubric to enhance the effectiveness of NTS feedback.
Methods: We conducted five complementary studies to assess current NTS training and feedback. The first was a systematic review aimed at identifying intraoperative NTS training interventions …

An Exploratory Study Of Soft Skills Development Expectations In Two-Year Generation Z College Students, Kelli Hallsten Erickson
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
Workplace demands around competent demonstration of soft skills have been steadily increasing; therefore, institutions of higher education have started focusing attention on instilling these skills within their student populations. The latest generational cohort to enter college and the workforce, Generation Z, has only recently begun to be studied for the impact of its members’ attitudes towards work and how those might change employer expectations around soft skills. A research gap exists, however, regarding students in Generation Z attending two-year schools and which soft skills they feel are most valuable to their future careers. This study sought to explore those attitudes …

Developing Cross-Cultural Competence And Media Literacy Through Multi-Modal Instruction And Projects, Michelle Verbitskaya, Alla Kourova, Irina Pidberejna
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
We explore the integration of Media Literacy in the 2-year Russian language STARTALK program, “How Words Shape People: Understanding Business Russian Through Proverbs.” Given the current geopolitical climate, particularly the ongoing war in Ukraine, fostering critical engagement with media has become more essential than ever. By encouraging students to interact with multimedia resources—including animated videos, podcasts, news articles, and the Russian National Corpora—the curriculum aims to enhance both language and media literacy skills. Media Literacy’s Five Key Framework is applied to guide students in analyzing media critically while producing academic projects and cultural responses. We present a curriculum that fosters …
Teachers’ Challenges In Implementing The New Mexican School’S Educational Model, Mayra Margarito Gaspar
Teachers’ Challenges In Implementing The New Mexican School’S Educational Model, Mayra Margarito Gaspar
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
This scholarly essay explores the challenges that teachers face in implementing the Nueva Escuela Mexicana (NEM) [new Mexican school] educational model, which prioritizes project-based and interdisciplinary learning over subject-based instruction. The NEM’s flexible approach requires teachers to independently structure lessons, ensuring continuity without a predefined thematic sequence. Collaboration is essential, yet many educators struggle with interdisciplinary coordination, especially in secondary education. Limited planning time and curricular flexibility further complicate implementation. Teachers in marginalized areas also face resource constraints, which hinders project-based learning. Additionally, the NEM’s textbooks, which are designed for integrative learning, lack clear organization and guidelines and make them …
Fostering Students' Metacognitive Awareness Through Student Led Learning Logs, Jessica M. Carter
Fostering Students' Metacognitive Awareness Through Student Led Learning Logs, Jessica M. Carter
Masters Projects
A key component for middle school students' success is structured opportunities to develop metacognitive awareness and autonomous skills. This project addressed the gap between students' metacognitive capabilities and available classroom tools by developing a comprehensive student-led learning log system for middle school contexts.
Grounded in Flavell's metacognitive theory and culturally responsive pedagogical principles, this project created four primary components: (1) a flexible learning log framework with templates adaptable across subject areas, (2) a reflection prompt bank containing over 100 metacognitive questions organized by planning, monitoring, and evaluating stages, (3) a practical implementation guide requiring minimal professional development, and (4) a …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts
Background & Significance: Adolescent girls in the United States (U.S.) often lack adequate education and support regarding puberty and menstruation, despite the importance of this knowledge for healthy development (Schmitt et al., 2022). Only 21% of school systems serving ages 8–12 provide puberty education, and many educators feel unprepared to teach it (Schmitt et al., 2022). Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to equip youth development specialists (YDS) at a community organization with a structured curriculum and educational tools to confidently educate adolescent females (ages 8–13) on the physical, emotional, and social aspects of puberty and menstruation. Intervention: A four-day …
